5. SILAS? NEWTON (Gideon Jr.1) b. Sept. 3, 1779; d. S. Oct. 21, 1832. He res. in several places in Marlboro and in 1823 rem. to Westminster, Vt., and came to S. 1826 where he lived about three years, then settled in Westmore- land where he was for a time engaged in the manufacture of earthern-ware; was known in that town as "Potter Newton." When a young man he had a strong desire to obtain a college education and fit himself for the ministry, but was obliged to give up the idea. Is said to have been a very religous man, strict in his views, faithful in practice and greatly attached to his church. He m. Sarah Chaffin of Acton, Mass., who d. Lowell, Mass., 1868, age 87 years, dau. of Robert Chaffin. He res. in south-west part of S. and d. in this town.

He was educated in the public schools at Auburn; studied law and was admitted to the bar, Apr. 10, 1880; entered into partnership with Peter A. Hendrick, late Justice of the Supreme Court of the state of New York. For three terms he served as city clerk of Auburn. Hav- ing a penchant for newspaper work he entered the field of journalism; for five years he was on the staff of the N. Y. Evening World, after which he served for five years in a similar position with the N. Y. Sun. On Dec. 30, 1897 he was appointed City Magistrate of N. Y. City by Mayor Strong. He was then selected by Mayor Low to establish the first Children's Court in New York City and on May 2, 1902 he was appointed a Justice of Special Sessions for that purpose, a position he held the full term of ten years. He m. Sept. 28, 1893 Jennie Encell.

G, 103d Regt. and so far as knonw, left no relatives.
