As Mr. Hartwell formerly res. in S. some account of the accident which caused his untimely death as related by an old citizen and as published in a local paper of that period is here given.
"While living in the edge of Langdon and only a short distance from Drews- ville he went with his two-horse team into the woods some 40 rods west of the main highway, Wednesday afternoon, December 31, 1845 and on his return while descending a hill the top of the load on which he was riding slid off and Mr. Hartwell was pitched forward his body falling behind the horses while both legs a little below the hip were caught under the sled. Here he lay screaming for help for the reins were entangled about his body in such a manner that the horses could not proceed.
. Several persons in the vicinity heard his cries, yet strange as it may seem, no one suspected distress. His faithful dog called loudly and continued run- ning forward then returning to lick the face of his master, but to no avail. Night came on, he surely thought his family would take warning when he did

not return home. His good wife occasionally went to the door and looking into the stillness could hear the dog calling, yet she neither became alarmed nor made effort to ascertain the cause, while this helpless man lay in anguish, not only during the afternoon, but during a long and bitter cold night.
After fourteen hours he was found at four o'clock the next morning fully conscious, his face frost-bitten and his limbs terribly frozen, though no bones were broken. He explained if he could only have got his knife and cut the reins he could have escaped, but that was impossible. He lingered between life and death until the end came the following Tuesday."
