He fought in the French and Indian war; in 1755 being stationed at Fort Dummer (now in Brattleboro, Vt.) "he was sent out, with eighteen others, as a scout; the party were surprised by the Indians, and only six escaped. Mr. Kidder saved him- self by taking to a large tree; in that position he shot one man, but during the skirmish he received a wound in his side." He later was a soldier in the Rev. war; was the eleventh family to move into Temple. He m. Rebecca Wilder.


5. JOSEPH5 KIDDER b. New Ipswich Aug. 22, 1763; rem. with his par- ents to Temple 1770; about 1826 he settled at Landgrove, Vt., where he d. He m. 17-, Mrs. Huldah Stiles (a sister (?) of Col. Landgrove, May 8, 1869, dau. of Joseph and Sally (Brooks) Knight. He was a cousin of D. Whiting, the well known milk-man of Wilton and Boston.

2. Rev. HENRY S.1 KIMBALL b. Candia Sept. 15, 1839; d. Boston State Hospital, Mass., Jan. 26, 1916. He was educated in his native town, Derry and Pinkerton Academy. At 14 years of age he went to Manchester, N. H., and for a time was a merchant's clerk; then taught school, after which he en- tered The Biblical Institute, New Hampton; then the theological dept. of Bos- ton University at Concord, and a severe attack of illness prevented his entering Dartmouth College. He was ordained Apr. 1866 and became a minister of the Congregational faith; held pastorates at Sutton, Alton, Lakeport, N. H., Lynn, Boylston, Mass., Rochester, Dayville, Conn., Hyannis, Mass., eleven years at Troy, N. H., then came to S. July 1, 1909, and where he remained until com- pelled to retire on account of ill health when he went to the home of his dau. Mrs. Cross, So. Royalston, Mass., then entered the Hospital a short time be- fore his d. He preached his last sermon Dec. 19, 1915, and at death was on leave-of-absence from S. church. For three years Mr. Kimball was connected with the Little Wanderers' Home in Boston where his love for children and his philanthropic sympathy made him especially well liked. While here he made an annual trip into the middle-west to find homes for the children, and

He was always interested in education and public works, was a member of the School Board in several places; at Boylston "he was the prime mover in founding the public library, and was one of its first trustees." Wilson Palmer, in his "Reminiscences of Candia" says "Mr. Kimball is an earnest and eloquent advocate in all reform movements. He has given some of his most earnest and effective pleadings in the cause of temperance" "In two of his parishes there were such far-reaching revivals under his ministry that the historians of both towns refer to them in heartiest terms." KING


1. THOMAS F.' KING was taxed 1868-1871 inclusive. He boarded in the family of John Kingsbury; was quite an old gentleman at the time.


KINGSBURY


*This name is an ancient one, and takes us back to the days of the Saxon Kings-that is, as the name of a place. There are four places in England by the name of Kingsbury. The family was quite numerous in Suffolk and Essex Counties, England, during the sixteenth century. The name appears in many forms, as Kingsburye, Kingsberry, Kingesburie, Kyngsburye, Kingesbarey, Kingesbery, Chingesberie, etc.


The probable line of descent in England is as follows:


1. JOHN' KINGESBURYE who d. 1539; bur. in the St. Andrews church- yard.


2. JOHN' KINGESBURYE, the younger, of Edwardston; living in 1578.

§So far as known, the date Joseph1 Kingsbury came to America is unknown and the maiden name of his wife (AMES) has never been established from reliable documentary evidence, to the author's knowledge. It is understood that the name of "Ames" first appeared in print in America in the Boston Transcript, about 1890.

10. JAMES® KINGSBURY (Jonathan5, Jonathan4, James3, Nathaniel?, Joseph1) b. Needham, Mass., Sept. 30, 1768; d. there Feb. 29, 1852. His name appears in at least four towns in Cheshire County. He was a farmer and inn- keeper in Sullivan and S .; a farmer in Gilsum. He opened a tavern at No. 126 in 1796 and about one year later rem. (probably to Gilsum, then to Sullivan) . It is understood a tavern was run in his name in Sullivan by his brother John6 in 1796. He returned to S. and was taxed 1821-'29, at which time he lived at No. 141.
