9. SAMUEL HARRISON PORTER (Dr. Vine", Vine5, William4, Stanley3, Samuel2, John1) usually known as "Harrison Porter" is well remembered by a few old citizens as an argus-eyed pedagogue who taught the S. village school during the Fifties. He was a remarkably successful teacher, a vocation which he followed more or less for many years. Through some cause he lost an eye when a young man, yet he once told his pupils, "he could see more with one eye than some could with two." The following abridged sketch of Mr. Por- ter's life appeared in K. S. at time of his d., 1908 :

About 1833 his parents moved from Morristown, Vt., to Walpole and settled on the hill farm known as the Sargent place. In 1843 the father d. and Harrison, being the oldest son at home, took charge of the farm and carried it on for three years, when the family moved to Alstead. Mr. Porter attended the Academy at Walpole, schools in Alstead, Mar- low, So. Woodstock, Vt., and the military school at Norwich, Vt., sup- porting himself by teaching school winters. After his m. he taught school at So. Abington, Mass., then returned to Alstead and was in business for several years. He came to S. 1858 and built No. 64 as a store. In 1872 he settled in Walpole where he lived for 30 years. He

was for several years salesman in the general store of his brother, George P. Porter, and then taught the intermediate school in the vil- lage of Walpole for a number of years. Mr. Porter was one of the most useful and respected citizens of Walpole. He had the New England versatility and could turn his hand successfully to almost any kind of business. Besides being a farmer, school teacher and merchant he often acted as an auctioneer and had a ready wit which served him well in that position. He was a staunch Republican and a strong Unitarian and in the absence of a clergyman often conducted Sunday services and read the sermon with feeling and effect.
