ii. JONATHAN Feb. 14, 1715/16. (3)

3. JONATHAN3 SMITH (Jonathan2, Thomas1) b. Feb. 14, 1715/16; d. S. Oct. 9, 1786. He m. at Middleboro, Mass., Sept 6, 1737, Experience Cushman -descended from two Mayflower passengers-of Plympton, Mass., b. July 12, 1719; d. S. Dec. 4, 1790; dau. of Ichabod and Patience (Holmes) Cushman. They joined the church at Middleboro Feb. 14, 1742, were dismissed and joined the church at Bolton, Conn., Sept. 7, 1753. During the month of March, 1761, Col. Benjamin Bellows of Walpole purchased a large tract of land in the town of Boyle* from the original owners. On May 1, 1761, he sold "fifty nine Right or Shares of land in the Township of Boyle --- to Contain Eighteen thousand acres" for £1350 lawful money. The purchasers were, as stated in the deed, "Samuel Gilburd Esqr., Josiah Kilburn Tanner, Thomas Sumner Gent. all of Heburn in the County of Hartford & Jonathan Smith of Bolton Husbandman In the County aforesd & Joseph Mack of Lime in the County of Newton and all in the Colleney of Connecticut."

The exact time when Jonathan Smith came here is unknown but there is no doubt but what he was one of the very first to settle in what is now Surry village. His dwelling stood at (No. 61) the foot of the hill easterly of the cemetery. He may be considered not only one of the founders of Surry vil- lage, but a leading and influential citizen during these first few years. Feb. 27, 1764, Clement Sumner of Keene issued a call for a Proprietors meeting to "be holden at the house of mr Jonathan Smiths." This is proof that Mr. Smith not only was living here in February 1764, but he had already erected a dwelling house at that time, and he certainly must have arrived in this valley as early as 1763.

At a meeting, Mar. 13, 1764; Woolston Brockway (at No. 38) was chosen moderator, Obadiah Willcox (at No. 93) was chosen Proprietors clerk, Jona- than Smith, Woolston Brockway and Joseph Mack (probably at No. 62) were chosen a committee to lay out and clear necessary "Rodes or highways in Sd Gilsum."

For several years nearly all the Proprietors and town meetings held in Boyle, Gilsum and Surry were held in Mr. Smith's house. In April 1773 an adjourned town meeting was held at the house of Jonathan . Smith "inn- holder." §This is the earliest mention of an "inn" in S. He signed the peti- tion, July 4, 1768, for the incorporation of Surry, also the Association Test,

*It must be remembered that the town of "Boyle" was re-incorporated and named "'Gilsum" and all the west end of Gilsum was taken and incorporated Mar. 9, 1769, and named Surry. The balance of S. being taken from Westmoreland.

§Jonathan3 Smith is mentioned as an "inn-keeper", Jan. 13, 1773-R. of D.

Later he became colonel, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. One record states he represented S. and Gilsum in the Constitutional Convention of 1788, which is believed to be erroneous.

HISTORY OF SURRY

He lived in the old house near the foot of "Sand-hill" (near No. 24) during the Rev. war and not long after finishing his service for American liberty, tradition says, an Indian from New York state appeared in town in search of Capt. Smith with evil intent. He was seen on one occasion concealed under the highway bridge at the foot of the hill south of Capt. Thomas Harvey's house-No. 176. Imbedded in a timber in the old barn on Capt. Smith's farm was a bullet, remembered by some now living, which tradition says was shot at Smith by the old red-skin. The Captain being a good shot, soon after buried his foe near the brook north of the present barns. Jonathan was Capt. in 1777; Major in 1782 and Col. 1787. He res. in town as late as 1809, and d. in Rockingham, Vt. He m. in Westmoreland, Mar. 10, 1768, Huldah Hay- ward who d. in Gilsum Mar. 11, 1839; aged 90,-K. S. In 1806 either wittingly or un-wittingly, he was accused of passing counterfeit money (which was quite a common practice about that time) and was arrested and lodged in jail. His trial came up in Superior Court, May term, 1806, and in 1807/8, he left S. and nothing further is known of him or family. Some account of this affair was printed at that period in local papers, and from other sources, it is believed his prop- erty in S. was largely sacrificed during the trial.
