He then went to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he became a pony express rider from that city to Virginia City, Nev .; later at Sacramento, Cal., he was a driver of the U. S. mail stage on a 50 mile section of the famous "Overland route." He had many encounters with Indians during his life on the frontier. On one occasion while a "pony ex- press" rider he was pursued by a band of Indians, one of the savages rose up from the sage brush and attempted to disable his horse by a blow from a hatchet, but instead he struck the stirrup and inflicted a bad cut on the rider's foot. The chase continued for several miles until Mr. Scovell reached safety at the next mail station. During his flight he was wounded in the hand by two arrows, while the horse was injured by so many arrows that it died half an hour later. He returned to New England, 1872, locating in Fanuel Hall Market, Boston, m. Dec. 24, 1872, Caroline O. Mason, b. Walpole Oct. 20, 1841, dau. of Holland and Susan (Veazie) Mason.
