Eliphalet4, Daniel3, Daniel2, Richard1) attended school in his native town and was gradu- ated from the Academy at Keene, at 15 he began the trade of carriage and sign painting in Keene, at 22 he was a dealer in drugs, paints, etc .; subse- quently he became a druggist and was in business in Keene for 25 years, a portion of the time under the firm name of "Dort & Chandler." He was a member of the old Light Infantry militia company when a young man, and finally was appointed lieutenant. In the fall of 1861 Mr. Dort enlisted a company of men to serve for three years in the Civil war, and he was com- missioned captain of his Company, which became a part of the 6th N. H. Regt. Vols.

Not long after Capt. Dort was promoted to major of the regiment. This body of troops took part in Burnside's expedition to North Carolina, and fought at the battles of Elizabeth City, Camden, Second Bull Run, South Moun- tain and Antietam. During the summer of 1862 Maj. Dort's wife and son Arthur came to visit him in camp, accompanied by wives of other officers. They had only just landed at Newport News when suddenly the regiment was ordered away. The visitors embarked on the steamer West Point enroute for the North. In the evening of Aug. 13, 1862, the West Point ran into the steamer George Peabody and sank almost immediately. Mrs. Dort, her son and other women perished in the disaster.
