Politically, he was a thorough Democrat; ardent in his sympathy for the South in the time of the Civil War. He m. Nov. 16, 1829, Charlotte Dwinell, b. Mar. 9, 1808; d. S. Oct. 1, 1890. She was a sister of Luther Dwinnell, q.v., also of Charles Dwinnell who kept the Sun Tavern in Keene, 1845-50. 12. CHARLES DAGGETT REED (David®, Dea. David5, Nathan4, James3, Thomas2, John1) and his brother Gideon, left their home and went to live with their own mother's people, near Boston, abt. 1830. Finally he settled at Philadelphia, Pa., where he entered the wholesale shoe business in company with Haddock & Reed (not of his kin) ; the firm name was, "Haddock, Reed & Co.," and at one time, "Haddock, Haseltine & Reed." He accumulated a comfortable fortune in the business; purchased a home for his aged father (No. 108) in 1851. He and his brother Gideon remembered their native town by paying the town debt of nearly $5,000.00 and gave another $5,000.00 to establish the REED FREE LIBRARY in S. village. He d. unm.


13. GIDEON FRENCH THAYER REED (David6, Dea. David5, Nathan', James3, Thomas2, John1) was b. at No. 141, the site of the dwelling can still be found in the forest not far from the north-east corner of the town. When a young lad he went to Boston with his brother Charles, and remained until manhood. He became a jeweler and kept a store at the corner of Washington and Court streets in Boston; subsequently he rem. to New York City and be- came associated with the Tiffany Jewelry Co., where for many years he was an expert judge of diamonds and pearls for this well known house. frequent trips to Paris to purchase jewels for the firm and crossed the ocean over fifty times. During the latter years he would frequently take a "run up to Surry for a day or two, visit his old birth place, then hasten back to catch the boat for Paris."


While in this business he accumulated wealth rapidly and became a mil- lionaire. So far as known no other son of Surry has amassed a greater for- tune, and these two sons-Charles and Gideon Reed-born in humble sur- roundings in the early part of the last century, went out into the world when young lads and in due time became benefactors and honored by the citizens of their native town. He established his son Charles A. 2nd, in business in Paris at an expense of over a million dollars, but the son died within a few years. He m. Oct. 24, 1839, Rebecca Thayer Jackson of Boston, who d. Jamai- ca Plain, Mass., Feb. 20, 1906. Ch .:

Mr. Reed states: My parents moved to Illinois in the spring of the year and while en route one of their children died (this probably was Harvey K. who d. May 17, 1836); in passing through what is now South Chicago the roads were in several inches of mud which caused much trouble and discomfort, and the land could have been bought at $1.00 per acre. 16. LEWIS GREENLEAF REED (Lewis6, Dea. David5, Nathan4, James3, Thomas", John1) learned the printing business in the office of the Cheshire Republican, Keene, about 1836, and was in this business in New Hampshire and elsewhere for many years; subsequently he was in the mercantile business, then res. in N. Y. City. He attended several Surry Old Home Days and about 1907, was one of the speakers of the day. He has written a good deal for publication, and a collection of his poems and short prose pieces was published in New York in 1894, under the title, "Jingles of Humor, Sarcasm and Fact." He m. in N. Y. City, Dec. 7, 1843, Mary Thompson, b. Scotland, 1821.

17. PLINY LORENZO REED (Lewis®, Dea. David5, Nathan4, James3, Thomas2, John1) "left home to earn his own living when he was seven years old"; after working on a farm for two or three years, went to Keene when about fourteen years of age, where he learned the trade of a printer in the office of the New Hampshire Sentinel. In 1841 he went to N. Y. City where for 19 years he was a compositor in a printing-house where the printing of books from stereotype-plates was a specialty. Then he became associated with the D. Appleton & Co., N. Y. City where he was for over 33 years a proof- reader in this well known publishing-house, and for over twelve years he read all the first-proofs, sometimes for fifty compositors. He finally retired and removed to California where he d.

18. FRANKLIN DAGGETT REED (Aaron6, Dea. David5, Nathan4, James3, Thomasª, John1) was a farmer and lived on his father's old farm on top of the hill, on land now owned by Fred S. Wyman. He and his family went on a day's visit while living here, and upon their return discovered their house had been burned during their absence. The dwelling was never rebuilt; the barn close at hand is still standing. He m. June 27, 1862, Mrs. Gratia (Sy- monds) Matthews, b. Hancock, Oct. 14, 1822; d. Keene, Feb. 5, 1901; dau. of Charles and Sally (Dennis) Symonds, and divorced wife of Sylvester Matthews of Marlow; four ch. by (1) m.

22. CHARLES WARREN REED (Nathan D.", Dea. David5, Nathan4, James3, Thomas2, John1) d. at No. 135 where he had lived since 1864. During his last illness he gave the writer material concerning kindred, friends and neighbors. He m. May 8, 1893, Emma Manerva Lane, b. Charlestown May 2, 1856; a wid. res. (1921) Springfield, Vt., dau. of Mark and Louisa (Holden) Lane.

She was dau. of John2 and Love (Bennett) Mack, and gr-dau. of John1 Mack the emigrant, q.v. The epitaph on her head-stone in Lyme reads thus :


"Here Lieth ye Body of Mrs. Elizabeth ye wife of Jonathen Reed, who Died Jenewery ye 18 An. Do. 1732-3, in ye 21- year of Her age."


He m. (2) Mar. 14, 1734, Mrs. Elizabeth (Smith) Smith, widow of Daniel Smith, her cousin.

30. FREDERICK® REED (Gen. James", Joseph, Jr.4, Joseph3, Ralph2, William1) b. Aug. 16, 1752. He was living at "Monadnock No. 4"-now Fitz- william-in 1773; in Mar. 1780, he bought a farm in S. Jan. 26, 1781 he bought of Job Gleason land in north part of town; 1780 he is called an "In- holder." He appears to have lived at No. 33 or 35 for a portion of the time while in S. In 1784 he sold to his father, Gen. James Reed of Keene, although the General probably never lived here. He m. Hannah

college, Springfield, Mo., 1881; graduated from Union Theological Seminary, N. Y. City, 1884; was ordained June 14, 1884 and soon after his m. went West. He had settlements at Richmond, Utah, Shoshone, Ida., then in 1890, returned to N. H. and became pastor of the Gilsum and Surry Gongregational churches. Although he did not res. in S. yet he revived the religious life of the town, and for a period of four years he labored faithfully in both towns. He later held pastorates at Warner and Hinsdale, Lynnfield, Mass., and served various churches in New York state. In Sept. 1919, he returned "home to Gilsum" where he labored until, on account of ill health, he resigned, Dec. 31, 1922. He m. May 8, 1884, Mary Addie Burpee b. Nelson, Nov. 6, 1862; dau. of Daniel March and Ursula Newell (Stone) Burpee of Sullivan.
