He settled in Northfield; was a famous hunter and trapper of wolves; once when the bounty was $20.00 he secured two the same day. On the day of the battle of Bennington (Vt.), Aug. 16, 1777, he was at work in the meadow with his younger sons, and distinctly hearing the boom of the cannon, said he could not work, for a battle was going on and "I have three boys in it, I must go home." The next day the news came of the defeat and death of Colonel Baum arrived, and the information that his sons had gone through the battle and escaped uninjured. He m. Samuel2, Zachariah1) when eleven years of age went across the Connecticut River with his father to plough a piece of land he had there; this being in the month of March, he took along his gun for the purpose of hunting partridges. In crossing a swale where a skunk cabbage grew, he noticed some of it had been eaten off, and knowing no animal would eat it but the bear, he concluded one was in the vicinity; putting his dog on the track he came to a hemlock tree that had fallen down; in looking in among the brush, he saw a black ob- ject, and putting a couple of bullets into his gun he fired, when a bear sprang out wounded and made off followed by the dog. Reloading his gun he followed, overtaking the bear who was retained by the dog; getting sufficiently near, he fired killing him; then going for his father to assist him in carrying the bear home. His father, finally being convinced went, but complaining all the while that he had lost a day's work plowing. Aug. 2, 1765 Moses D. in S .; res. at No. 7, 16, 88, and at No. 39. He taught penmnaship in the schools of his native town when a young man; was a student at Boston Art Museum and later studied at the William M. Hunt art studio in that city; in 1872 and '73 was a teacher in crayon drawing and oil painting at Cambridge. His work has largely been from nature, portraiture, animal life and landscape, specializing in the latter. His paintings have been on exhibition at Art Mu- seums in both Boston and Worcester where they have received gratifying comment. While yet a lad in school he became interested in the history of his native town and noted down items of interest; later he took a copy of all the gravestone inscriptions in town. All this material he turned over to the au- thor of this history and that material has been incorporated in this work. He was selectman, 1870, 77, 78; represented the town in General Court, 1878-9, and librarian at Reed Free Library for a time. An article written by Mr. Field, "An Old Burial Yard," and published in K. S. 1897 will be found in Reminiscence Chapter. He m. (1) May 5, 1873, Margaret Grayson Fawcett who d.
