GEORGE ALEXANDER2 WHEELOCK (Lynds1) was a prominent and influential citizen of Keene for over half a century; was one of the vice presidents at the centennial anniversary of Keene, May 26, 1853; represented the town of Keene in the legislature 1873; was interested in Keene Natural History Society; in forestry; presented parks to the city of Keene, one of which is the Wheelock Park in West Keene. He d. unm. at over 90 years of age.


13. ELIJAH1 WHEELOCK, parentage unk. came from Alstead to S .; was taxed 1809; kept tavern that year and rem. from here after a year or two. He m. Anna , b. abt. 1780; d. S. a wid. Aug. 7, 1856; bur. S .; lived at No. 122 and is remembered as "The little old lady Wheelock." She was also called "Ann Wheelock."

JOHN' WHITCOMB the first American ancestor of this well known New England family came from Dorchester, Eng., and settled in Dorchester, Mass., in 1633, and was a member of the church there in 1638; in 1640 he was a res. of Scituate where he had a farm of over 100 acres, which he sold in 1649 to Thomas Hicks. He rem. as early as 1652 to Lancaster, Mass., where he d. Sept. 24, 1662; m. Frances - who d. May 17, 1671.

He res. in Claremont, (1921) ; is pastor of the Congl. ch. at Cornish, N. H., 1922; is perhaps a gr-gr-son of Dea. Jonathan Whitcomb of Claremont . He rec'd his A.B. from Dartmouth Coll., 1896, then attended Hartford Theol. Seminary one year. His first pastorate was in Dub- lin, May 1897 to Oct. 1900; was then installed in this town where he was pas- tor until May 1, 1906, when he received a call and settled over the Congl. church at Westminster, Vt., remaining until 1910, when he began his labor at Cornish or Croydon. He m. Oct. 12, 1899, Minnette Eliza Washburn b. Springfield, Vt.

17. EZEKIEL OSGOOD WHITCOMB (Joel", Jotham", Philemon5, Joseph4, Josiah3, Josiah2, John1) b. Swanzey Feb. 17, 1835; d. Keene (hospital ?) from an accident, June 13, 1898. For many yrs. he lived in the east part of Swan- zey; is said to have invented a pump which received a U. S. patent, and for a time he manufactured the same. He wore a straw hat summer and winter, said, "on account of an injury to his head." He lived at No. 47, with Herbert N. Gunn, his son-in-law; was a charter member of Surry Grange, Nov. 1890. He m. May 21, 1863, Martha E. Newmarsh, b. Boston, Nov. 13, 1839.
