5. JOAB" DAGGETT (John', Ebenezer", Joseph", John1) was of Attlebor- ough, Mass. He was "possessed of considerable property," and d. Mar. 17, 1816. In the spring of the year, 1809, he bought No. 38, and the following year sold this property to Otis Daggett. Whether, or not, he actually ever lived in S. has not been ascertained. May 17, 1819, Eli Dort of S. was ap- pointed executor of his property (in Surry ?). His family record has not been compiled to our satisfaction; however it is known he had two sons at least, Levi" who settled in Troy and Marcus who located in Marlboro, and there is reason to believe that Otis Daggett of S. was also his son. Several members of the Daggett family, probably all near kin to Joab, were living or taxed in S. between 1820 and '45.
6. OTIS1 DAGGETT (supposed to have been son of Joab5) settled at No. 38 in 1810 and about ten years later bought and settled at No. 43. He was a farmer and blacksmith. The shop at No. 42 is where he is supposed to have first labored, and later his shop stood near his house, No. 43. In 1843 Otis and his w. Lydia sold "one undivided half of his home farm" to his son George W., who relinquished this right three years later. On July 31, 1846, Otis and w. sold the home place to s. John G. Daggett who was to maintain his parents with food, fire-wood, blacksmith shop, garden; etc., and after their decease to pay $500.00 to the following heirs, viz .: George W. Daggett, Otis S. Daggett, Nancy Maria Daggett, Eliza Lydia Daggett and Martha Jane Daggett. John G., was executor of his father's will.

DARLING
The ancestry of this old New England family has not positively been estab- lished; from the records at our command we believe the line of descent runs as follows :
1. Rev. DAVID' DARLING (John', John3, Capt. John2, Dennis1) was b. Apr. 14, 1753, at Wrentham, Mass .; d. at No. 247 in Keene Mar. 15, 1835; bur. S. His parents probably were John and Hannah (Healey) Darling of Wren- tham. He was graduated from Rhode Island College (now Brown University) and received his degree, Sept. 8, 1779; he then studied for the Ministry and became the first settled pastor of the church in S. At a special town meet- ing, July 10, 1780, voted: "to Hier the Rev'd David Darling to preach with us on probation." At another town meeting, Nov. 14, of the same year, voted to give the Rev. Darling a call to settle with us in the work of the gospel min- istry. Mr. Darling accepted the call and was ordained Thursday Jan. 18th, 1781. He was dismissed Dec. 30, 1783, "difficulties having arisen on account of a marriage." He then turned his attention to farming which he followed till d. He lived at No. 23, and moved to No. 247 between Dec. 10, 1790 and Mar. 15, 1791. He continued to retain an interest in this town and attended church here, and finally was laid at rest in the South Burying Yard.
He m. (1) Feb. 15, 1781 Esther Metcalf, b. Milford, Mass., Nov. 3, 1761; d. Keene Feb. 16, 1793; m. (2) Sept. 24, 1793 Molly Woods of Keene, b. Nov. 3, 1766; d. Keene Mar. 24, 1818, dau. of William and Naomi (Brown) Woods; m. (3) Aug. 27, 1818, Matilda Bowditch, d. Jan. 1826 (1861 ?).

2. Capt. JOHN METCALF DARLING (Rev. David', John3, Capt. John2, Dennis1) was greatly indebted to his father for his education and thorough knowledge of military science. When 22 years of age, ,being ambitious and wishing to carve out a destiny for himself, he made his plans to go to the "far North" as it was then called. He left Keene in the spring of 1805 and arrived at Concord, Vt., June 6th, and after casting about a short time pur- chased and began chopping on his new farm. Within three weeks he had fallen the trees on seven acres. During the Autumn he cleared the land and built a log-cabin for himself and his bride-to-be. Returning to Keene he was m. Feb. 12, 1806 to Salome Reed, b. Fitzwilliam Dec. 30, 1781; d. Concord, Vt., May 14, 1862; dau. of Hinds and Beulah (Muzzy) Reed, and gr-dau. of Gen. James Reed, q. v. This adventurous young couple arrived at their new home, March 1806, bringing their goods into town on a wagon, the first that ever came into Concord; the last mile or two the bride rode on a horse without bridle or saddle. With zeal and perseverance they took up and continued their labor of improving conditions. Having no churn, Mr. Darling split out some staves, shaving and fashioned them and the bottom with his jack-knife, and with a piece of a broken scythe made the hoops; having no sap-buckets he made some of birch bark with wood bottoms, and they did good service for many years. Many such expedients as these naturally brought prosperity to the young settlers and they began to devote their energies and sound common sense to things outside their own home. Mr. Darling was influential in estab- lishing the schools and churches; was Supt. of the Sunday school more than 25 years; the Academy completed 1823, was due to his energy and persistance. In due time he was a man honored and beloved by everyone in his town. For many years he kept a diary and when 78 years of age wrote his autobi- ography for his s. George B.6, of Boston. (In 1840, Hinds Reed, 82 years of age, was on U. S. Pension roll and living with Capt. John M. Darling, Concord, Vt.)
