59. DAVID7 CARPENTER (Uriah®, Benjamin5, Benjamin4, Joseph3, Wil- liam2, William1) b. Ashford, Conn., Jan. 28, 1759; d. Keene Apr. 3, 1845. The following is from the Carpenter Memorial: "When he was about 16 years of age, he volunteered and joined the Continental army, and was one of the guards at Major Andre's execution. At the close of the war he returned and soon after married Azubah Allen, daughter of Daniel Allen. About 1790 he removed to Landgrove, Vt., where he resided for 18 years. His first child was born in this town Aug. 26, 1787, and this is the first birth on the town records. He was a poor boy bound out to service at an early age, but as he became older he was dissatisfied with his usage and determined to leave; he stole his indentures from his master's desk and hid them under a stone on the premises. After he became of age he returned and found them all safe. He never had the advantages of a common school education, but he learned to read and to keep his accounts, and became a self educated man. He repre- sented the town in the Vermont Legislature in 1800 and in 1802. He held the office of justice of the peace and other important town offices. He removed to Keene, N. H., in 1807, where he died in 1845. He accumulated a handsome property, to the reported amount of $40,000."
His Rev. war service, q. v., is also found in Keene History. He m. Nov. 8, 1786, Azubah Allen b. Windham, Conn., 1766; d. Keene May 13, 1849, dau. of Daniel and a relative of the noted Gen. Ethan Allen of Vermont. In 1816 he

JONATHAN CARPENTER FAMILY
66. JONATHAN' CARPENTER (ancestry not positively known), b. 1753, d. S. at the home of Willard Carpenter June 14, 1832; a loyal patriot during the Rev. war, q. v. He settled in S. as early as 1776, signed the Asso. Test that year. He served as selectman, 1788-92, 94, 95; town clerk, 1790-94; treasurer, 1790-93; a man of more than average mental ability and appears to have held the respect and confidence of his townsmen, even though he and his wife were a "town charge" prior to their d. He lived at (or near) No. 33 which he sold in 1792, and about 1805 moved to Keene and from that town to Gilsum prior to 1829, when he and his w. returned to S. and for a time lived with Ichabod Ballou, q. v. He m. in S. Nov. 26, 1789, Rachel Hay- ward, dau. of Peter Hayward and Ruth his w., q. v. She lived in her old age with Calvin Mack in Gilsum where she d. 1830, aged 79 years. There is some reason to suspect this was his (2) m. (Possibly he was the Jonathan b. Ashford, Conn., Apr. 11, 1752; see Carpenter Genealogy pp. 236, 395.)
