3. STEPHEN HUSSEY CLEMENT (Benjamin F.2, Jeremiah1) came to No. 223 with his parents in 1865 and remained until d. - 52 yrs. He was a well informed prosperous farmer, one of the most prominent townsmen and respected by all who knew him. He was selectman, seventeen years; a mem- ber of the constitutional convention in 1902, and state legislature in 1908. Lightning struck his buildings during a shower in 1888 and all were destroyed; he rebuilt the present ones during the fall of the same year. He m. May 3, 1881, Addie Maria Chickering, b. Westmoreland May 3, 1857, dau. of Albert and Nancy Maria (Butts) Chickering. They had no children of their own but the following have entered their home in childhood :
i. LOREN A. DAVIS b. Chester, Vt., Sept. 12, 1878, came from Westmore- land to this home when four years of age, and remained until 21, q. v.
ii. FLORENCE A. CHICKERING of Walpole came when she was six years and remained in the family about twenty years. She m. Harry F. Knight, q. v.
iii. WALTER C. PARKER of Keene came when ten years of age and remained until his d. Sept. 10, 1910; age 18-8-10; s. of DeWitt C. & Mary (Burnham) Parker.
iv. LESTER EARL TOWNSEND of the Orphans Home in Franklin came in 1910 when 12 years of age; he is still on the farm with Mrs. Clement. He was b. in N. H. June 18, 1898 and placed in the Orphans Home when a few months of age; came to Mr. Clements, Apr. 1911.

COLE
1. * THOMAS COLE of Salem, Mass., is said to have been the emigrant ancestor of this family. The line of descent is: John2, Samuel3, Samuel‘, Solomon" who settled in Landaff and John® Cole. (2)
2. JOHN® COLE (Solomon5, Samuel', Samuel3, John2, Thomas1) b. in Row- ley, Mass., 1768; d. in S. Oct. 4, 1807. He is said to have been a teamster from Boston to towns in Northern Vermont and New Hampshire. While en- gaged in that business he doubtless became familiar with this part of the state which may have been an incentive for his final settlement in Surry. In 1803 he purchased No. 214 in the south-west part of the town, this being at that time on line of the stage road. §He was a shoemaker and opened a store while living here, but was taken ill and died before middle life.
The property was sold and the widow subsequently lived in Gilsum where she d. Dec. 30, 1825. He m. 1788 (?) Polly (Mary) Bemis, b. Westminster, Mass., 1763; dau. of Zaccheus and Elizabeth (Lyon) Bemis. She d. Gilsum Dec. 30, 1825.

5. ASA COLE (John®, Solomon5, Samuel4, Samuel3, John2, Thomas1) when a small boy went to Gilsum to live with Deacon Amherst Hayward, q. v. When 16 he began a five year apprenticeship with Luther Whitney, learning the clothier's trade and later worked at his trade in Fitchburg, Mass., and Grafton. He returned to Gilsum in the fall of 1830 and went into partner- ship with David Brigham, under the firm name of BRIGHAM & COLE, in the manufacture of all kinds of cloth. Owing to ill health he gave up busi- ness the year following, and took up farming. He rem. to Keene in March 1859 where he res. till his death, which came after an illness of a few weeks; aged 96 y; 2 m; 2 d. "The deceased was undoubtedly the oldest person in Keene, and one of the oldest in Cheshire county. He was a man of remark- able vigor and an exceptional physique, and until quite recently had been ac- tive as a farmer." He m. Sept. 3, 1829 Sarah Pitts, b. Uxbridge, Mass., Nov. 5, 1808; d. He was an early settler in the latter town; was one of the 130 men who signed the Association Test there in 1776. His name appears on a muster roll in Massachusetts, and he probably was the man of that name who served in Scott's Co., and Col. Samuel Ashley's Regt., in Rev. war, q. v. Feb. 2, 1780 he purchased land of Jonathan Morton in the S. W. part of S. on which he lived three or four years. In 1780 he collected the school tax in that part of the town, and on the 21st of May (1780) the selectmen laid out a road by marked trees, "to Roger Conant's house," the exact location of his dwelling we believe was at No. 211. 1. JOHN COOPER was one of those who signed the Association test in Westmoreland in 1776. As two of his children were b. in this town it is as- sumed he moved here between 1781 and 1784. In 1790 they were living in Rockingham, Vt., where his m. and b. of his ch. are on record.
