Hearing a commotion in the barn-yard one day she discovered a bear was after her pig, getting a fire shovel she dispatched the brute. So far as known they had no ch.

1. SAMUEL1 MESERVEY an old salt-sea sailor came to S. in 1802 and worked some weeks for John M'Curdy at No. 12, shaving shingles, etc. He suddenly left town Dec. 24, 1802. MILLESON
1. MAHLON' MILLESON, a mining engineer from the West, came to S. about 1879 as Supt. of "The Granite State Gold and Silver Mining Co." He paid poll tax 1880-84, the latter year as non-res. It is understood he was liv- ing in or near Boston within 20 years. The Mining property was taxed in S. 1881 until 1885, and finally sold for the taxes, Feb. 12, 1887. Valuation, $300.00 to $800.00.

2. MOSES2 MOODY (Benjamin1) b. Landaff Feb. 4, 1804; d. Keene Dec. 13, 1845; a farmer; lived at Landaff, Haverhill, Alstead, S. in 1843/44; Keene. While in S. he lived at No. 138, then returned to Alstead and lived on the highland half-a-mile from the S-Alstead town-line and the first dwelling nor- therly from No. 140, the site of which can still be seen in the old mowing by the old highway leading to Alstead Centre. Tradition says he would go out on moonlight evenings in the fall of the year, armed with a stout cane and exter- minate polecats. He m. May 20, 1826 Betsey Watson Howe, b. 9. LEWIS B.ª MUNROE (Abijah3, Dr. Philip2, Philip1) taught school at No. 113; subsequently went to Boston and New York City. He m. Addie (or Ada) Osgood of Chelsea, Mass., a member of the Osgood family, well known mer- chants of Boston. He with the assistance of his wife got out the famous "Mun- rce Reader" which was in use in the public schools in N. E. 40 or 45 years ago. He began teaching elocution in Boston, the first principle of his system was "absolute naturalness of tone and emphasis." This finally developed into the School of Oratory, of Boston University. He possessed splendid talents and became one of the most refined and scholarly men that ever went out of this town. We regret our knowledge of him is so limited.

This family is of ancient Scotch descent, dating back into the 17th century. The family have been noted for their strong religion and convictions, their loyalty to country in peace and war, and their keen mental ability. The earl- iest of the name, so far as known, was a certain Nesmith and his wife who rem. from Scotland to the North of Ireland about 1690. They were the par- ents of :

They were strong Presbyterians, who with others had been persecuted by both the Church of England and the Roman Catholics. Desiring more re- ligious freedom a company of these Scotch-Irish yeoman emigrated to the New World in 1718, and landed at Boston. On Apr. 22, 1719 James Nesmith and fifteen others of that company made the first settlement in what is now the town of Londonderry. They introduced in this country the cultivation of the potato and the spinning of flax.
2. JAMES' NESMITH b. Ireland in 1718, d. Londonderry July 15, 1793. He came to America with parents, served at the Battle of Bunker Hill and at Bennington, although beyond military age at the time. He m. Mary Dinsmore.
3. ROBERT NESMITH of Londonderry, m. Jane Anderson, dau. of Thomas of Londonderry.

5. SULLIVAN NATHANIEL NESMITH b. Londonderry Apr. 28, 1828; d. at Manchester suddenly Aug. 5, 1879. He was b. at the old Nesmith Home- stead not far from No. Londonderry. He was Division Master on the old Cheshire railroad at Westmoreland Depot; later Road Master on the Man- chester & Lawrence, and Manchester & North Weare railroads. He m. Nancy Agnes Clapp, b. July 16, 1831.

6. FRANK ERNEST NESMITH (Sullivan N.5, Capt. James', Robert3, James2, Dea. James1) began railroad life at 16 years of age, as assistant to his father. After four years he began firing a locomotive; was for two years Sec- tion Master on Worcester & Nashua railroad; also held similar positions on Nashua, Acton & Boston R. R. and Manchester & Keene R. R., being employed a portion of time as Road Master. He then bought No. 16 and settled there Apr. 1, 1886, and remained until he rem. to his present place, No. 68, Dec. 1888. Few men of S. have served the town, County and State more than Mr. Nesmith. Was selectman 16 years, and 13 years chairman of the board, treasurer six years, member of school board 7 years, County Commissioner six years, represented the town in the General Court 1893-4, and 1919-20.
