3. Judge ELIJAH® KNIGHT (Simeon2, Benjamin1) b. Northfield Dec. 27, 1756; d. Keene Dec. 4, 1842. He was a prominent man in all military affairs in the Connecticut river valley during the time Vermont was an independent republic-1777-1791; a soldier in Rev. war, q. v .; admitted to the bar, June 1796 and became the first lawyer in Rockingham; was selectman there, 1805 and town clerk in 1787. He came to No. 135 in 1819, soon after built the front part of this house and the following year opened a tavern and the first post office in town in this house; he served as first postmaster. He was an able lawyer and judge of Windham Co. (Vt.) Court 14 years, Judge of Probate at same place; res. in Keene 15 or 20 years, prior to d.


While living in this town he did much of the legal business. After a few years he rem. to Keene and lived in the "Kate Tyler" house where he con- tinued as inn-keeper. That house stood until about 1880, and was 20 or 30 feet north of what is now No. 572 Court St. He m. (1) Sept. 5, 1779 Mercy Fuller, dau. of -. He m. (2) Nov. 21, 1805 Mrs. Martha (Baxter) Tyler, dau. of Capt. Simon Baxter, q. v. and divorced wid. of Stephen Tyler, q. v.

4. DAVIDª LUIS (James1) b. 1780; came to S. and worked for Capt. Thomas Harvey at No. 177 in 1801. During the small-pox epidemic in S. he contracted the disease. Having nearly recovered he took a long horse back ride, had a relapse and d. Jan. 29, 1802. He was buried near the barn on that farm where his grave is marked by a head-stone.
