He came from Littleton to Walpole* in the "month of November 1782" and bought 50 acres of land and erected a dwelling at No. 181; near S. line. This 50 acres was the nucleus of a farm of 300 acres which he afterwards possessed, fifty of which lay in S. and is known as the "Merriam lot." "At the time of the battle of Bennington, a courier was dispatched to inform him that soldiers would pass his house on their way to the scene of conflict and he must prepare to furnish them with water, the next day. Accordingly every available vessel that would hold water was filled from his well and ready for use. The following day 3000 soldiers drank and filled their canteens from his well, and passed on to Col. Josiah Goldsmith's tavern, where they were again refreshed by devouring a whole ox, which he had been ordered to prepare for them."-History of Wal- pole, 1880, by George Aldrich.
The family still own this farm, and have erected the dwelling at No. 180. He m. Mar. 11, 1775 §Fanny Goldsmith, b. 1729; d. Sept. 19, 1824, dau. of Josiah Goldsmith of Walpole. Lieut. John Merriam d. in his 89th year .- K. S.
* Walpole History states John Merriam rem. to W. "1782" which must be an error, if it is correct that Rev. soldiers drank from his well while on their way to the battle of Benning- ton, which took place in Aug., 1777.
