1. * JOHN1 PERKKINS the first of the name in New England was b. at Hill- morton, Warwickshire, England, 1583; d. Ipswich, Mass., in 1654. With his wife Judith and five ch. he sailed from Bristol, Eng .; Dec. 1, 1630, in the ship "Lyon"; William Pierce, Master, and after a stormy passage of 67 days ar- rived at Nantasket, Mass., Feb. 5, 1631; the day following they came to anchor in Boston harbor where they remained for two years. He took the freemans oath May 18, 1631, which admitted him to all the civil rights of the colony. In 1633; with others, he rem. to the new town of Ipswich, Mass., founded by John Winthrop.

The coat of arms of the Perkins family was taken from a deed of land in Ipswich, Mass., from Dr. John Perkins and wife to John Wainwright of Ipswich, and bears date of 1725. Tombstones bearing the same heraldic device have been found in both Boston and Ipswich.


These arms are upon the tomb of Francis Per- kins of Ufton Manor, in County of Berkshire, England, who was b. in 1582, and are the same as are found upon memorial tablets in other churches in England.

It is supposed he built No. 156 where his aged mother and sister Sarah were living about 1850. In 1858 Mr. Perkins bought No. 106, which has remained in that family to the present-1922. He served as selectman, 1831, and although he never enjoyed robust health, yet was a good farmer and lived to the advanced age of over 87 years. He m. Apr. 11, 1816 in S. Prudence Porter, b.
