WILLIAMS
1. JOHN WILLIAMS, an unlettered negro and foreigner, came to town abt. 1813 and remained until d. Jan. 25, 1824, at the home of Willard Smith. He was called "Black John"; worked for Eliphaz Field at No. 8 as a farm hand; was of a cheerful nature; played on the banjo and bones; sang negro melodies, etc. He could tell within a few minutes the time in the night by the stars. His last sickness was a brain disease, and as was the custom, after d. the doctors examined his skull. He was buried in the South cemetery near the

edge of the bank which gave away and abt. 1870 the skull and some of the bones become exposed, but soon were reinterred. It was found his skull was a quarter of an inch thick. Mar. 11, 1824, Dr. John Wakefield was paid $3.67 by the town for doctoring John Williams, a pauper; probably unmarried.
