"Petition of Charles Rice (formerly of Surry), Bunker Hill soldier (to the N. H. Legislature), 1791.
'To the honb'le the Senate and house of Representative in General Court convened at Concord .- Humbly Shews, Charles Rice of Keene, that in the year 1775 being a Soldier in Captain Jeremiah Stiles's Company & Colo. John Starks Regiment he received a most distressing wound through the breast at the memorable battle of Bunker Hill- which has ever since rendered it impossible for him to gain a comfort- able subsistence for himself-much more for a numerous family which daily look to him for that assistance which he most readily afford were it in his power .- That your petitioner has never received the least as- sistance from his Country being entirely ignorant of any feasible meth- od of making . application-He therefore prays your Honorable body to compassionate his case and lend him such assistance as in your clemency you shall judge proper-And as in duty bound ever prays Jeremiah Stiles in behalf of the petitioner.'
("State Papers, vol. 12, page 318.)"

Mar. 17, 1838; a soldier in Rev. war; came to S. in 1789 and settled at No. 55 where he kept tavern for about 25 years. From his arrival in town until 1850 he and his two sons were among the most prominent citizens; owning or holding a mortgage on much real estate. He was captain in the militia, town treasurer 1794-98, selectman 1801, represented S. and Gilsum in General Court, 1796, 98, 1800, 02, 04. He was the prime factor in bringing the first running water into the village of S. and he held a larger interest in the "rights" than any other person. He was one of the first merchants in the village, opening a store as early as 1799 "near the meeting house" (now the Town Hall). Reared in the old school of culture and dignity he was stern yet kindly, but never allowing children to sit in his presence without permission. His own children were required to arise when he entered the room and to always address him as-"Sir." About 1830 he went to live in a house which his s. Jonathan Jr. erected at No. 101 where he spent his remaining days. It is said, "He walked six miles to Box- ford to woo his future wife," Betty (or Elizabeth) Chadwick to whom he was m.
