CROSBY

The CROSBY family came to America from England during the first half of the 17th century; all are supposed to have descended from Simon de Crosby of Lancashire, England, 1220.

Simon Crosby at the age of 26 with w. Ann and s. Thomas emigrated to America and settled in Cambridge, Mass., 1635. Simon is supposed to have been the ancestor of the Crosby family in Surry, but the connecting links are unknown.

Here he remained until 21 years of age then came to S. and began working for Jonathan Har- vey, Jr., at which time his worldly possessions consisted of the clothes on his back. He remained in town till within a short time of his d. For nearly 50 years he was the village sexton, dug the graves of our kindred and friends and for many years tolled the funeral knell, finally he too was laid at rest in the Yard in which he had so long and faithfully labored. It is said if he saw any rowdyism or detected pilfering of flowers, etc., in the cemetery, a sharp reprimand quickly came.

A few years before his death he went over the yard with Francis F. Field and pointed out a large number of the unmarked graves which Mr. Field carefully noted down in hand books which he still retains.

The custom of ringing the church bell at noon and nine in the evening was in full force for many years while he was sexton. He m. Aug. 16, 1847. Eunice Ballou who d. Mar. 18, 1903, dau. of Dea. Ichabod, q. v. They lived at No. 62, 75, 66 and 67.

CUSHING

*Few families in this country have been more celebrated than the Cushings, and probably no other has furnished more Judges for our Probate, Municipal and Supreme Courts. The derivation of the name CUSHING is somewhat un- certain; so far as known all the descendants of Matthew Cushing who came to America in 1638 have retained the same form of spelling. Prior to the 16th century, however, like most proper names, it was variously written-Cushin, Cushyng, Cushyn, Cusshyn, Cusseyn, Cussyn, etc. The American branch of the family descend from the Cushing's of Norfolk Co. England, where they were not only numerous but among the "leading families" in that County during the 15th and 16th centuries.
