5. HENRY' ELLIS b. Wrentham, Mass., Feb. 15, 1747/8; d. Keene Aug. 3, 1838. He m. Nov. 2, 1771 Meletiah Thayer, b. 1751; d. Apr. 30, 1850 in Keene, dau of Richard Thayer of Braintree, Mass. He rem. from Franklin to Keene soon after his m. and settled in west part of town. After some years he sold this farm and lived in Keene village for seven years then bought a large tract of land in the north part of Keene, cleared the land and built a two story dwelling still standing though much altered. This house is now the home of Harry F. Knight and was formerly owned by Samuel Ellis and stood when first built in the pasture some thirty rods west of the present lo- cation. Its former site is marked by an old cellar-hole. He was a soldier from Keene in Rev. war; an industrious, even-tempered man, and so devoutly pious as to be called "deacon." His wife was very energtic, and is said to have sold her wedding shoes to buy young apple trees. One of their six ch .:

Mr. Ellis moved in 1834 to Vergennes, Vt., and engaged in the manufactur- ing of pails which he continued for seven years then came to S. He settled at No. 16 in April 1841 at which time he also purchased the farm and buildings at No. 17 (known as the Willard Smith place). He remained here until 1854 when moved to No. 7, then to No. 8, where he spent his remaining days. He was a prosperous thrifty farmer and held various positions of trust and re- sponsibility in this town. He was town treasurer 1846, '50; selectman 1843, 4, 5, 7, 9, 54, 59, 65, 69, 70, 71 and 75. He was representative to the General Court 1855, 56.

The name is variously spelled Esty, Estey, Easty, Eastey. Steward1 Esty, supposed to have been a descendant of Jeffrey Esty who settled in Salem, Mass., prior to 1637, emigrated from Sutton, Mass. to Westmoreland a few years after the close of the Rev. war. He was a carpenter and farmer after he came to this state. He m. Mary Brown and had five ch.
1. HENRY' ESTY (Steward1) b. Westmoreland June 18, 1806; settled in his native town where he was a large real estate owner in the East village. He taught school in S. 1826 and later in Brattleboro, Westmoreland and Keene. From the following it appears he was living in town 1832 and was appointed Assistant Postmaster :

3. CALVIN WALDO3 FARWELL (Darius2, Richard1) b. Nelson Aug. 29, 1846, res. (1921) Los Angeles, Cal. He came to S. when a young man and worked several months, 1869 and '70 for Scripture & Gay in the saw mill at No. 112, during which time he boarded with Mr. Scripture at No. 111. Later he worked for Curtis G. Britton on the Walpole Road in Keene, then lived till 1889 on the Faulkner & Colony farm below the Four Corners in Keene, then on a farm on Marlboro St. in Keene where he was in the milk business. While living here in alighting from a street car one evening he fell and the car wheel ran over and crushed the heel-bone in one foot, an accident from which he never fully recovered. He sold his property and business and rem. to Los Angeles, Oct. 1911, and for several years has been employed in the Los Angeles County Hospital. Under date of Aug. 6, 1921 Mr. Farwell writes: I like here, the climate and the people, but could I return to New Hampshire and find my home, family and friends as in the past I could be content. I can truthfully say the following has been a great comfort to me: "When my father and mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." He in. June 1, 1876 Ella Jane Gilbert, b. 2. Rev. JOSEPH2 FAWCETT (Mark1) b. at Littlethropse, Yorkshire, Eng- land, Dec. 23, 1820; d. in or near Alford, England, Jan. 2, 1905 while there on a visit. He was of the M. E. denomination, yet preached in the Cong. church in S. and in Sullivan. He came to S. as early as 1862 and during the next 35 years supplied this town twice and Sullivan church twice. They lived at No. 39 in their old age, and here his widow d. He m. May 21, 1844, Ann Grayson, b. in Bondgate, Ripton, Yorkshire, England, Oct. 9, 1819; d. S. Feb. 12, 1910, dau. of Thomas and Elizabeth (Humphreys) Grayson.

1. ABRAHAM' FAY of Northborough, Mass., m. Abigail Ball. They had: 2. ASA BALL? FAY (Abraham1) b. Northborough Aug. 31, 1838; d. there Jan. 30, 1919. He came to S. 1873 and remained until 1880/1, during which time he lived with Geo. Milton Reed at No. 126. He cleared off a large tract of wood-land on the hill east of No. 135. He built the "Fay wood-slide" which was in use till about 1890. While in town he was moderator and served as State Representative in 1876-7. He was a man of more than average ability, a soldier from Massachusetts in Civil war, and after his return to North- borough from this town, he served as postmaster for several years. Dec. 26, 1892 he m. Anna M. Barnes, b. Northborough Dec. 10, 1843, d. May 26, 1894, dau. of Dr. Henry and Elizabeth (Ball) Barnes. No ch.

*The name of Field is derived from De la Feld; the Coat of Arms is seen on monuments of knights of the name in Mandeley church which were of the 13th century. In 1220 a Robert Feld was bailiff of the city of Exeter, Eng- land. During the next hundred years the name, somewhat varied in spelling, occurs more and more frequently, and is found in many counties of England. The line of descent from one, Roger Feld to Zachariah11 Field the American ancestor is as follows: Roger1; Thomas2; John"; Thomas'; Thomas; William6; William™; Richard'; Johnº; John1º; Zachariah11 b. about 1596.
1. ZACHARIAH1 FIELD was in the eleventh generation from Roger Del1 Feld (or Field) who was b. in 1240 at Sowerby, Eng. He was b. in Eng. about 1596; d. at Hatfield, Mass., June 30, 1666. He came to America, 1630; was in Boston and Dorchester, rem. to Hartford, Conn., prior to 1643 by going through the wilderness to the Connecticut River, where he was one of the first settlers. Here he owned a large tract of land, when in 1644, dissensions arose in the church which could not be successfully reconciled and he with others bought a tract of land nine miles square lying above Holyoke in the Conn. River valley. "Mr. Field settled in the part now Northampton; in 1661 a grant was given him in the part now Hatfield to which place he moved and there passed the remainder of his days." He m. about 1641, Mary who d. about 1670.
2. SERGEANT SAMUEL' FIELD b. 1651 (?), Hartford; rem. 1663 to Northampton with his father; thence to Hatfield where he was slain by In- dians, June 24, 1697, while hoeing corn in Hatfield meadows. He was a prom- inent and influential man in Hatfield, holding many town offices; was a ser- geant in the Turners Falls fight, May 19, 1676. He m. Aug. 9, 1676, Sarah Gilbert, b. Dec. 19, 1655; d. Feb. 4, 1712, dau. of Thomas and Catherine (Bliss)

3. EBENEZER" FIELD b. Hatfield Mar. 17, 1688; d. by accident at North- field, Mass., Sept. 12, 1723. He settled about 1710 in Deerfield, and being of- fered a house-lot he rem. to Northfield in 1717 where he was engaged at his trade of blacksmith and gunsmith. Here he was elected constable, fence viewer and selectman. There is a tradition in the family that "in the dusk of evening Mr. Field was standing on his shed pitching peas, which were passed up to him from a cart below and out of sight, into the barn window. The sen- try caught a glimpse of the wads as they were rapidly tossed into the window, and thinking the Indians were leaping stealthily into the barn for mischief, instantly fired, mortally wounding Mr. Field." He m. 1714, Elizabeth Arms b. 1695; d. Oct. 1, 1772, dau. of William and Joanna (Hawks) Arms of Deerfield. She was a noted school-teacher in Northfield and vicinity; m. (2) Azariah Wright of Northfield.
