Prior to 1850 the highway now known as the Pond Road was called "Gilbert Road," after Mr. Gilbert. He m. S. Mar. 5, 1782, Joanna Hayward who d. Walpole Mar. 28, 1835; dau. of William Hayward, q. v Soon after he rem. to Walpole. He planted a butternut tree in his yard, which is still thrifty, a monarch of its kind, which has afforded ample shade in summer and borne butternuts in profusion for five generations to crack.

GILMORE
1. Rev. GEORGE GILMORE came to town as early as Sept. 1774 when it was voted "to send for the Rev. Mr. Gilmore to preach this year." Jan. 19, 1775 the town voted to give him "thirty pounds the first year." He remained here about two years. About 1773 a call was extended to Rev. Gilmore to settle over the Congl. church at Manchester, but he declined.

4. JOB4 GLEASON (Isaac3, Isaac2, Thomas1) b. Jan. 28, 1731; date and place of his d. unknown. He lived in Enfield, Conn., and his name appears in Gilsum (now S.) as early as 1762. He owned land here and appears to have come to town about that time, he was chosen one of the assessors Oct. 31, 1764. In 1768 he signed a petition for the incorporation of Surry. He was a Rev. soldier, q. v. At a town meeting June 11, 1781 the town voted: to give or discharge Job Gleason for one hundred dollars. This was doubtless for ser- vice in the war. Possibly this was Job Gleason Jr., as both father and son were soldiers, yet the records would indicate this vote was to apply to the father. He appears to have left S. about 1784. He m. Feb. 28, 1754, Hannah Pease. He lived probably at No. 75, in 1765. He or his s. Job ( Jr., is thought to have settled at Thomlinson (Grafton), Vt.

. 1. Rev. DAVID1 GOODALL came to S. 1779. On May 8th of that year the church voted "to hire the Rev. David Goodall to preach to us on probation." He remained in town about one year; was b. in Marlboro, Mass., Aug. 14, 1749; d. Littleton Mar. 4, 1830; a graduate from Dartmouth College 1777. From S. he went to Halifax, Vt., where he was ordained pastor of the Congre- gational church, 1781; dismissed 1796. He was a "citizen of the town" of Lit- tleton 1803, at which time he organized the Congregational church in that town.

1. ASA1 GRIFFIN came to S. as early as 1794 and remained until 1804. He was taxed in the "Middle Highway District" in the former year. He moved to No. 122 in 1796 and the year following the town voted to let Asa Griffin set his barn in the highway north of his house. He was called a "Cordwainer." He is doubtless the man of that name who was b. 1772, and d. in Walpole June 10, 1810, aged 38 years. He m. S. Mar. 31, 1796, Elizabeth Hayward, dau. of Daniel Hayward, q. v. His wid. m. (2) June 5, 1816 Adoniram Ben- ton, q. v.

1. FRANCIS LORENZO' GUILLOW, so far as known, the first of the name in America was of Italian origin. In 1790 "Francis Guellow" was living at Norton, Mass. He rem. to Gill that state, yet, according to G. H. his two sons, who were b. prior to 1790 were born in "Gill." This appears improbable, unless he lived a second time in Gill. Tradition says, "he came to this country when a boy, and was bound as a servant to the minister of Norton." He m. Polly Derby who d. Gilsum 1831-2, aged 89.
