4. HARRISON NEWELL4 SCRIPTURE (Charles3, Capt. Samuel?, Sam- uel1) settled in S. 1865 and purchased that year the saw and grist mill at No. 112 of Osborne & Hale of Keene. He lived at No. 111 until he built his dwell- ing, 115, in 1876; in 1880 he tore the old mill down and on the site erected a new saw and grist mill which he ran for about 35 years. This mill has now gone to decay; fell down and the lumber sold-1922. He served as selectman, 1871, 79, 85, 97, 98, 99, 00, 03, 04, 05, 06, and 09. State representative 1882 of S., Sullivan, and Roxbury. He has also been a member of the Board of Health and supervisor of the check-list, etc. He m. Aug. 15, 1865, Charlotte Ann Fisher b. Manchester July 30, 1844; d. S. May 3, 1890; dau. of Justus and Eveline (Scott) Fisher.

Later he preached at Worces- ter, Vt. 1870-71. While in S. his sister Myra was his housekeeper. She took typhoid fever and d. here, Oct. 27, 1865 aged 30 yrs. bur. in Hollis.


SHAW.


1. DAVID SHAW, whose ancestral line has not been established, was b. abt. 1773; d. in S. Mar. 7, 1857. Our earliest knowledge of him is found at the time of his m. which states he was from "New Marlboro," but whether this was intended, Marlboro, or New Marlboro, Mass., is unknown. He taught the village school during the winter of 1796-97. He was living at Marlboro, N. H., and rem. to Alstead on or abt. Nov. 1, 1800, where he appears to have lived until he came to S. in the fall of 1813, or early in 1814. He lived first in the old house at No. 16, and later rem. to the Baxter tavern, No. 116, known for many years as "Shaw's Corner." He had a well balanced mind, did much of the legal business after locating in this town; was deputy sheriff several years, moderator, 1816-18; selectman, 1815-18. He m. in S. Aug. 22, 1796, Prudence Baxter, dau. of Capt. Simon Baxter, q.v. He was known as Esq. Shaw.

9. BARNABAS" SHELLEY m. Aug. 26, 1792, Lydia Cole, who d. Apr. 21, 1847; aged 82 years. Two of their ch. were:

10. OREN SHELLEY (Jonathan", Jonathan3, Joseph, Benjamin3 Robert2, Robert1). When about ten years of age his parents moved to Westmoreland where he lived until 1826 when he settled in S., living first at No. 82, and in 1835 at No. 33, and served as "Highway Surveyor" of district No. 6. He was taxed here 1838 for the last time, then rem. to a farm on Stratton Moun- tain, Vt., where he remained until 1846 when he settled in Keene. He was a thrifty farmer and owned a large tract of land in Keene extending from Beaver brook well up the west side of Beech Hill, now covered with streets and dwellings. He m. in Westmoreland Mar. 20, 1820, Rowena Ranstead, b. Springfield, Vt. Mar. 19, 1796; d. Keene Dec. 14, 1898, at the great age, 102 yrs. 8 mos. 25 d., dau. of Rufus and Anna (Aldrich) Ranstead, q.v. Their married life extended over 69 years when he d. at the age of 92 years, 24 days. Several articles have been printed in both Keene and Boston newspapers re- garding this honored and remarkable couple. He never held office, "but one time, when I lived in Surry, they wanted me to be highway surveyor, and so I took it for a while." "No, I never was in any war, but I've been killed three times," once it was while "I was riding on a load of hay. It was up in Surry, and I was going down hill. There wasn't any brace for my feet, and I couldn't hold back, and so I just slid right off right between the horses and the wagon" and I was badly stunned. Rowena, his wife, was one of nine children of Rufus Ranstead, q.v. After living in Springfield and Weathers- field, Vt., came to live with her grand-parents in Westmoreland when about 15 years of age. Spinning and weaving were among her accomplishments, and in these she excelled. "My spinning wheel was my piano, you know. I used to go out spinning by the week. I got three and sixpence a week, and I laid up a little money on that, too."

ROBERT SHELLEY (Jonathan®, Jonathan5, Joseph', Benjamin3, Rob- ert2, Robert1) was taxed in S. 1827, and for some years he was interested in a tract of land south-easterly of No. 229 on the Pond Road, long known as "The Shelley lot." Whether or not he ever resided in this town is unknown. For years he was a grocery and dry-goods merchant in Keene and for a few years was associated with Herman O. Streeter, q.v. as, "Shelley & Streeter." His name appears as "Robert" and Robert C (ole?) Shelley. He m. (1) Arethusa Honey b. 1807; d. Keene Feb. 26, 1858. He m. (2) Aug. 5, 1859, Nancy Eliza- beth Heaton, b. Sullivan Sept. 13, 1825; d. Keene Apr. 16, 1902, dau. of Nathaniel and Harriet (Nims) Heaton. With his bro. Joseph7 under the firm name of "J. & R. Shelley," was in business in Keene for some years. Ch. by (1) wife:

GEORGE RANSTEAD® SHELLEY (Oren7, Jonathan®, Jonathan5, Jo- seph4, Benjamin3, Robert2, Robert1) is said to have driven a stage coach over Green Mountains when a young man; after his m. he went west and lived at Mt. Morris, Waushara Co., Wisconsin; returning to Keene in 1861 where he was for many years a carriage painter for "J. & F. French." He m. Keene Nov. 2, 1852, Mary Ann Russell b. Keene Aug. 13, 1831, d. there July 27, 1901, dau. of Stephen and Sophia (Ellis) Russell. Ch .:

SHOPPANY.


1. A Mr.1 SHOPPANY a Canadian Frenchman wood-chopper, lived in a shanty near the fork of roads above No. 137 in 1862. He went West that year with Isaac Brown, q.v. but returned to S. in November following. During this time his family lived in S. They had a child2 which died in Alstead July 16, 1862, by taking poison; aged 2 yrs. A dau. was m. Jan. 1, 1863, name unknown.

SIMMONS.


1. Miss PHOEBE SIMMONS, b. Rockingham, Vt. abt. 1800; d. in Keene Dec. 9, 1886. She was a negress, came to live in Capt. Simon Baxter's family when a girl. She lived at No. 116 for many years then removed to Keene with the Robinson family; her record follows:


Miss Phoebe Simmons d. at the home of Charles D. Robinson where she had lived for ten years, at the age of 86 years. She was well known to many as a colored woman of estimable personal characteris- tics. After living in the Baxter family some years, Mrs. Margaret Baxter gave her to her granddaughter, Mrs. Jonathan Robinson, about 1823, and she remained in the Robinson family until her d. At the death of Mrs. Baxter, as was the custom in those times, provided that Phoebe should have "One upper bed, one under bed, bedstead and cord, one pair of sheets, two pairs of sheets, two pairs of pillow-cases, two blankets and three outside bed-coverings, one tablecloth and three towels, one table and three chairs, some crockery, her clothing, and one cow." Phoebe was regarded with peculiar affection; was known to five generations of the family and at d. left a sister living with Peter Evans of Charlestown; at 90 years of age. "Aunt Phoebe," as she was called, was buried in the Robinson family lot in Woodland cemetery, Keene, where a headstone marks her grave.


SINCLAIR.


1. ALFRED PETER? SINCLAIR, a Frenchman wood chopper, b. at St. Monuque, Canada Jan. 15, 1875; came to S. 1914; lived at No. 232, then built a small house at No. 230 in 1918 where he lived until May 1919 when he removed to Gilsum. He was a s. of Peter1 and Mary (O'Shaughnessy) Sin- clair. He m. Keene May 9, 1918, Mrs. Melvina (LaBounty) Durant, q.v.

He owned several lots in town and is supposed to have been the first man to settle at No. 83. He m. in Bolton Jan. 21, 1762, Susanna Smith ("both of Bolton") dau. of Jonathan Smith, q.v.
