10. SAMUEL ROBINSON8 HILLS (Esq. Samuel7, Benjamin®, Jabez5, Samuel4, Joseph3, Joseph2, George1) was in the tanning and currier business at his father's old stand, and lived at No. 132 until about 1828-30, when ac- cording to tradition, he took offence at being taxed so high, sold his property and with his meager capital settled in Brookline, Mass., where he went into the market-garden business. On leaving S. his neighbors lamented, saying "Poor Sam. Hills will lose his last hard-earned-dollar in that sort of business." He was, however, remarkably successful and ten years later his old townsmen were saying, "Sam Hills could buy half the town if he saw fit, and pay for it." He finally rem. to Framingham, and his s. Samuel D. Hills became associated with him in garden trucking. He m. (1) 1821, Clarissa Dunn, b. Rockingham, Vt., Apr. 4, 1803; d. Brookline Dec. 13, 1854. He m. (2) Elizabeth B. Hyde.

HIXON


The Hixon, Hickson, Hixson, family came from Mass., to Walpole early in the last century. Ezra Hixon came to W. from Franklin in 1805-7, according to Aldrich's History of Walpole, and rem. to Brookfield, Vt., where he d. Dec. 11, 1872.


1. ELKANAH1 HIXON (possibly a nephew of Ezra) was living in Walpole 1814; 1817, he was called "a miller"; in 1820 he res. in Alstead at which time ' he bought the William Hartwell farm (No. 158) containing 28 acres of land. He was a shoemaker, and traveled from house to house making up the yearly supply of boots and shoes, called in those days, "Whipping the cat." William Baxter, q. v., held a mortgage on his farm and Hixon agreed to pay off the same in foot-wear in One, Two and Three years. He res. in S. about six years, then probably returned to Walpole. He m. before 1818


He, or another of the same name, of Walpole, m. in S. July 15, 1834 to Emeline Luce of Walpole. His name also appears as "Elkhart" Hixon. Ch. (record incomplete) :

1. DANIEL1 HODGKINS of Fitchburg, Mass., b. 1775; d. Alstead Jan. 16, 1845. Possibility he was the Daniel Hodgkins of Fitchburg, who desired to join the Calvinistic Cong'l Society, Aug. 10, 1805. He may have been kin to Amos Hodgkins of Fitchburg, a Rev. soldier, 1775. He m. Lydia , who d. Keene Oct. 9, 1867, aged 92-8-25 d .; int. Alstead Center cemetery.


2. DANIEL2 HODGKINS (Daniel1) lived in a substantial brick house which formerly stood in the southerly part of Alstead, a mile and one-fourth north of No. 140. In the fall of 1856 he moved to No. 132 where he, his s. Charles H.3 and gr-s. Leon A.4 Hodgkins have since res. He was b. Alstead Nov. 4, 1814; d. S. May 26, 1890; m. 1843, Rhoda Chamberlain Britton, d. July 31, 1882, dau. of James Britton, q. v.

1784; d. S. Feb. 28, 1855. On Mar. 21, 1811 Mr. Holbrook was granted his first license to keep tavern at No. 126, and for a period of over 54 years he and his s. George W., kept "open house" at this well known stand. He had a keen eye to perceive an active and well balanced mind and during his business career was one of the most successful men in town. He possessed those genial social qualities which made the traveller immediately at home while under the roof of "mine-host." He probably was captain in the state militia for he was familiarly known for years as "Capt. Holbrook."


Served as moderator ten years, treasurer two years, selectman 17 years, represented the town in General Court, 1826, 27, 28, 36 and was councilor dur- ing Gov. Henry Hubbard's administration. Capt. He served as moderator eight years; selectman six years; constable two years; state representative, 1853, 54, 63, 64, 65. During the Civil war he was Deputy U. S. Marshal of N. H., and was High Sheriff of Cheshire County at one time. A well known man in the coun- ty, and like his father, social and courteous. He m. June 10, 1841, Susan Jenette Robinson, dau. of Capt. Samuel Robinson, q. v. Politically he was a loyal member of the democratic party.
