The Wilcox (Willcox, Wilcoxson, Willcocks) family is of Saxon origin, and was seated at Bury St. Edmunds, county Suffolk, England before the Norman Conquest. Sir John Dundal, in the "Visitation of the County of Suffolk", men- tions 15 generations of this family prior to the year 1600. This traces the family back to the. year 1200. During the reign of King Edward III, Sir John Wilcox was entrusted with several important commands against the French and had command of the cross-bowman from Suffolk, Norfolk and Essex.

1. The Worshipful Mr. John1 Talcott, as he was styled in the old records, was born in Braintree, England, and came to this country in 1632. He settled in Newtown (Cambridge) Mass. In 1636 he removed to Hartford, Conn. He was one of the magistrates of the Conn. Colony until his death in 1669. He married Dorothy Mott in England, daughter of Mark Mott D.D., Rector of Rayne.


2. Capt. Samuel? Talcott, born in Cambridge, Mass., 1634-5 married Hannah, dau. of Hon. Elizur Holyoke and Mary Pynchon the dau. of William Pynchon who was Assistant Governor and Treasurer of the Mass. Bay Colony 1632-34; Governing Magistrate of Conn. 1637-38; Governor of Springfield, Mass. 1641-50.

4. Capt. John' Talcott born in Glastonbury, Conn., Dec. 17, 1704; m. 1731, Lucy, dau. of Rev. William Burnham. He was Capt. of the transport "Gull" which carried troops who fought at Cape Breton in 1745. He died at Prov- incetown, Mass., Aug. 25, 1745. On a monument in a deep depression of the sandhills in the village graveyard at Provincetown is the following inscrip- tion : "Here lies interred the remains of Capt. John Talcott of Glastonbury, who died here on his return after the victory of Cape Breton, A.D. 1745, in the 41st year of his age." His daughter, Sarah5, (Capt. John4, Benjamin3, Capt. 13. Capt. GEORGE WILCOX (Capt. Asa®, Ensign Asa5, Obadiah4, Eben- ezer3, Obadiah2, William1) was engaged many years building and repairing carriages, wagons and carts at No. 120. He bought a plot of land and built at No. 119 (in 1831) and where he lived most of his m. life. While erecting his house he lived in the top story of his shop. He served as town treasurer several years and selectman, 1848, 67 and 68. In 1844, 45 and '59 he repre- sented the town in the General Court. He m. (1) S. Aug. 2, 1831, Nancy P. Reed who d. S. Jan. 18, 1838, dau. of Lewis Reed, q.v .; m. (2) Westmoreland, May 28, 1840, Aurelia M. Reed, a sister of his (1) wife, who d. S. Dec. 25, 1854; m. 15. WILLIAM WALLACE WILCOX (Hollis®, Gaylord5, Obadiah4, Eben- ezer3, Obadiah2, William1) was born in the house his grandfather Gaylord Wii- cox built in 1815. When a young man he entered the employ of his uncle John Robbins in Boston. In 1871, immediately after the big fire, he moved to Chicago, Ill., and established a business of Railway Supplies which he carried on till his death, March 28, 1892. In 1887 he purchased the old homestead, No. 93, naming it "The Holly Farm." While on a visit to his native town abt. 1884 he had the inscription cut on "DINAH'S ROCK." He m. July 2, 1873, Mary Cathrine Monroe, b. Acra, Greene Co., N. Y. May 22, 1849; dau. of Nathaniel and Charlotte A. (Pitcher) Monroe: see C. C. Olmsted family record.

Mr. Wilcox, with his keen interest in his native town and his retentive memory when well over 80 years of age, gave the writer many items for this work regarding the north part of the town. He m. Feb. 8, 1899, Helen Josephine Sanborn, b. Mansfield, Mass. May 13, 1856, dau. of George Glines and Helen Maria (Tillson) Sanborn. She taught school in S. No issue.


17. FRED WALLACE& WILCOX (George H.7, Hollis®, Gaylord5, Obadiah4, Ebenezer3, Obadiah2, William1) was educated in the schools of Chicago, then took up manufacturing business, and is still pursuing similar lines. He m. Jan. 18, 1888, Margaret Agnes Stevenson Muir b. Port Dalhonsie, Ont., Ca., Dec. 15, 1863, dau. of Capt. David and Margaret (Carruthers) Muir .*
