The BUNDY family was very numerous in the early settlement of Walpole, much of its history remains in obscurity and probably ever will as no records, so far as known, were ever kept by the family.


1. JAMES' BUNDY, b. 1695 (?), settled in Walpole as early as 1762 or '63, d. there Apr. 12, 1772, a farmer. The name of his w. and date of b. of several of their ch. is unknown. He was a member of first church formed in Walpole, 1767. Ch. b .:

1. Rev. JACOB B.1 BURNHAM, called "Elder Burnham," settled in Wal- pole 1823 and for many years preached in the church at Christian Hollow in that town. "Mr. Burnham continued his pastorate till 1845 or '50 when he resigned the position which he had held so long, and com- menced the practice of medicine"-History of Walpole.

Much of his farm joined Beckwith (or Beckett) Pond, but in due time this body of water received the name of CALDWELL POND. The late Joseph W. He went to Chi- cago and for a while was in the employ of W. Wallace Wilcox, q. v., then at Lafayette, Ind., where he m. Melissa Moss (or Morse) ; then he rem. to Edgeley, N. Dak., from there he went to Canada. No ch. 3. DANIEL FRANKLIN3 CALDWELL (Joseph2, Samuel1) a soldier in Civil war, q. v. He lived in town most of the time from 1869 until he d. 1. JOHN' CANNON, a brother, Dr. Messer' Cannon of Sullivan was b. New Salem, Mass., Apr. 17, 1778; d. Alstead at the home of his s. Chandler Dec. 25, 1863, bur. in S. He probably was a s. of either John or Simeon Can- non of New Salem. He res. in Sullivan 1807-'09, then in Shrewsbury, Vt., and perhaps in other places, then came to S. and lived at No. 146 as early as 1843, but rem. elsewhere about 1848. "Benton brook" which crosses Gilsum Road not far from where he lived received from him the name of "Cannon brook." He m. 1807 Margaret Chandler, b. Alstead Mar. 29, 1788; d. S. Apr.

6. JEDEDIAH CARPENTER (Charles5, Samuel4, Samuel3, William2, Wil- liam1) b. Rehoboth Oct. 8, 1732; d. S. Mar. 26, 1815; a farmer, rem. from Rehoboth to Keene about 1764 where he owned land in Ash Swamp. In Feb. 1778 he bought land and settled at No. 168, on Carpenter hill, and where he spent his remaining days. Before 1790 he erected a comfortable one-story dwelling which stood until 1864. He was Sergt. in a list of the Keene foot company, prior to the Rev. war and signed the "Test" in that town in 1776. He m. (1) Sept. 5, 1754, Hannah -, b. May 25, 1734; d. May 26, 1759; m. (2) Jan. 10, 1760, Mary Peck, b. Oct. 20, 1738, d. S. May 10, 1823.

After about sixteen years he sold this property to his brother Charles and rem. to Concord, Vt. He m. S. May 25, 1796, Mary Thompson of Chesterfield, b. Mar. 21, 1769, d. Concord May 1, 1854, dau. of Silas and Abigail (Bancroft) Thompson, and a sister of the wife of his brother Charles.
