Having been "weekenders" since the early fifties, after re- tirement Val and John made Space 15 at Camp James their permanent home. They en- joyed the trips with their many friends in the Kern Valley Rov- ers RV Club. Val will be re- membered for her energy. en- thusiasm and her desire to see that a good time was enjoyed by all.
The past three years Val's health had suffered as she struggled with the effects of congestive heart failure, being hospitalized several times as a result of complications from the disease.
Although these problems were a heavy burden, Val never allowed herself to "give in" to the disease. She was, during this time, as she had been throughout her lifetime, a fine example to all.
There will be a memorial service. The place, date and. time are yet to be determined.

Lawrence Eugene Woodward
Larry Woodward was bom in Bell, Califomia, on May 7, 1940. He was eight years old when his family moved to Johnsondale, where he spent an idyllic four years running barefoot all over the mountains, which he loved to call "the big- gest and best backyard for a kid." He was always trying to catch and ride the wild horses. He never caught one, but he said it was more fun just trying. The garage he and his father built is still there to this day. When he was 12 years old, his family moved to Bass Lake where he graduated from Si- ---
erra High School in 1958.
In the following years, he moved to the city, went to hair- dressing school, got married and opened a beauty salon. He had a daughter who adored him. Larry had a role in a major motion picture and also became a gourmet cook. He always enjoyed throwing dinner par- ties for his many friends. He was a classic movie buff and loved to attend Broadway plays.
Larry worked as a beauti- cian in Upland, California, where all of his family lived. They went on camping vaca- tions all over California and Mexico, including many rafting and tubing trips on the Kem River. He was often featured in his local newspaper for the elaborate costumes he de- signed and wore to entertain emotionally and physically handicapped children and fundraisers for many other charities.
When he received the news that his sister was widowed, he went to live with her and her daughter in Bakersfield and to- gether they decided to move back to the mountains he called home. They became host and hostess of several camp- grounds between Kernville and Johnsondale. He was known for his blue golfcart and all the wild and abandoned cats they rescued from the camp- grounds. He was also recog-
nized for his beautiful vegetable and flower gardens for which he received an award at the Mt. Mesa Faire. In 1993, he pur- chased land in Kelso Valley and remained there until his passing with his sister at his side.
Larry was a man who was good of heart and pure of soul. The lessons of life he taught his daughter were to help those less fortunate than yourself, never be cruel and to smile. He always appreciated the simple things in life; watching the sun- rise, admiring the wildflowers in spring, and enjoying the com- pany of those he cherished. Everyone whose life he touched knows how special a man he was.
He is survived by his be- loved daughter, Heather Eliza- beth Schmitt of Bakersfield and his sister Elizabeth Woodward of Weldon.
Arrangements were en- trusted to the care of the Bonewell family, Lake Isabella Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Director.
