Maxine Rosalie Hughes


Private arrangements were måde for Maxine Rosalie Hughes who passed away on May 9, 1995 in Lake Isabella. She was bom April 16, 1911 in Nebraska and lived in the Kem River Valley for 29 years.


Maxine was a member of the Bodfish Beamers and Mountain Air C.B. Club and Kem River Valley Side Band C.B. Club and the Ladies Auxiliary of F.O.E. Aerie #3156.


She is survived by her daugh- ter Jean Ostermire of San Carlos, Califomia and her sister Babe Folden of Lincoln, Nebraska. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Alena Maryann Farr


Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 10, 1995 at 3:00 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Alena Maryann Farr. Officiat- ing was Pastor Randy Gallemore of the Lighthouse Pentecostal Church in Lake Isabella. Interment was Friday, May 12, 1995 at 1:00 p.m. in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Califomia.


Mrs. Farr was bom April 21, 1909 in Garlan County, Arkansas and passed away on May 7, 1995 in Bakersfield, California. She has lived in Califomia for the past 60 years and in Bodfish for 3 years. She worked for StarKist Tuna Co. for 20 years. She is a member of the Lighthouse Pentecostal Church.


She is survived by brother and sister-in-law Clyde and Virginia Kelley of Kemville; brother and sister-in-law Roy and Orleena Kelley of. Calamasa,? Galifomia ;; sister Daisy Curtis of Bodfish; and many nephews and nieces and great nieces and nephews.

Johann Kay Werner


Private inumment was held at Union Cemetery in Bakersfield with private interment to follow for longtime area resident, Johann Kay Wemer, age 75. He passed away in a Bakersfield hosptial on Monday, May 15, 1995. He was bom in Germany on October 3, 1919, where he spent his early years.


At the age of 15, he moved to the Orient and lived there until he was 21. He came to the United States in 1940, settling in the San Pedro and Los Angeles. Johann entered the United States Army Airforce in 1942 and served until 1945.


He and Monica Heymann were married in 1946 and together they made their home in the San Femando Valley area of Los An- geles. In 1966, Johann moved to Kemville and in 1967 he opened Kemville TV, which he operated until his retirement in 1980. He loved the out of doors and was especially fond of horses and donkeys.


Johann is survived by his lov- ing wife Monica of Kernville; by one son Tom Wemer of Reno, Nevada; one daughter Victoria Lee of Kemville; by four grand- children and many friends.


Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.


Sidney Alfred Hatch


Memorial services were held for Sidney Alfred Hatch, age 64, in the Rose Chapel of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home on Thursday, May 18, 1995 at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Deryl Lackey, pastor of the Mt. View Southem Baptist Church officiating. He passed away in a Bakersfield hospital on Friday evening, May 12, 1995.


Sidney was bom in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on November 28, 1930. He received his edu- cation and spent his early life there and in 1957 moved with his family to the Inglewood, Califomia, area. He then moved to Columbia Heights for a short time before retuming to Southem Califomia

settling in Hawthome.


He came to the lake area in 1977 where he purchased the Paradise Mobile Home Estates. He expanded the mobile home estates several times over the years to bring it to the size it is today. Sidney was a member of the Kem River Valley Elks Lodge #2358 and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lake Isabella Lodge #498. He loved gardening and had a special hobby of raising orchids.


Sidney is survived by his loving wife Mary of Lake Isabella; one son Glenn Hatch of North Holly- wood; one daughter Linda Pope of Ladera Heights; one brother Cliff Hatch of Canada; one sister Audrey Peters of Weldon; four grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.


Private inumment was held with interment at the Kem River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights. The services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home. William Baxter Mobley


William Baxter Mobley, age 88, from Lake Isabella, passed away at the Kem Valley Hospital - Skilled Nursing Wing on April 13, 1995. He had been a resident of the Skilled Nursing Center for ap- proximately three years.


Bill was bom in Oklahoma on March 4, 1907. He came to Cali- fornia in the mid-20's and retired in the Kem Valley during the late 1960's.


He was preceded in death by his loving wife Opal Love Parks.


Bill was cremated and laid to rest alongside his wife at the Kern River Valley Cemetery.

Margaret A. Jackson


Graveside services for Marg- aret Adalaide Jackson, age 88, of Lake Isabella, were held on Fri- day, May 19, 1995, at 11:00 a.m. in the Kem River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights. Officiating was Pastor David Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella. A 51-year county resident, Mrs. Jackson was bom September 23, 1906 in Canyon City, Colorado and passed quietly from this life on May 16, 1995.


Margaret was preceded in death by her son, Merle Jackson, of Colorado. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Cathy Jackson of Lake Isabella; son Norbert Jackson, of Colorado; daughters Georgia Pollock of San Jose, Ethel Huffman of Yuba City, Charlene Richardson of Cerres, June Aus- tin of Capistrano Beach, Margie Maples of San Marcos, Marlee Milam of Long Beach; many grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

Charles B. "Charlie" Straight


Private inumment was held at Union Cemetery in Bakersfield with private interment to follow for Mr. Charles Berger Straight, age 73. He passed away at his resi- dence in Weldon on Friday evening, May 12, 1995.


He was bom in lowa on Octo- ber 15, 1921. Charlie received his education and spent his early years there. As a young man, he worked as a farmer. He was a World War II veteran having


served in the U.S. Navy. In 1957, he moved to Norwalk and lived there and in Simi Valley where he was employed as a truck driver hauling cars and freight. In 1980, he came to the lake area settling in Weldon. He was a member of the Lake Isabella Post #7665 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Charlie loved to frequent swap meets and was a collector of many items. He was a devoted and loving father.


Charlie was preceded in death by his brother Richard. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Norris of Sacramento; son Charles Straight of Simi Valley and Weldon; son Gregory Straight of Simi Valley; son Kent Straight of North Hills; sister Lila Mahn; brother Harvey Straight of Tulsa, Oklahoma; brother Lloyd Straight of lowa; and brother Leo Straight of Califomia. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.


The services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.


Norman Craig Barton


On April 28, 1995, Norman Craig Barton passed on with his family at his bedside. Bom in Loui- siana, he came to Califomia in 1946, enlisted in the Navy for WWII, and was recalled for Korea.


Later he met and married his wife of 48 years Ginny. He made engineer in the L.A. County Fire Dept., did hardwood floors, and put himself throught college while he made his way up to Vice-Presi- dent of Engineering at Sweat and Crawford Insurance (Trans- america). They have two children,


Donna and Craig; a grandson Matthew. They retired to this area seven years ago after being weekenders since 1962.


He is also survived by his sis- ters Betty Dawson, Marolyn Pemberton, Carolyn Johnson, Gloria Barnett; sisters-in-law Jean Barton, Mary L. Boland, Mema R. Maxwell; brothers-in-law Johnny Peterkin and Mike Elefante.


Betty T. Glosser


Memorial services for Betty T. Glosser, age 69, of Bodfish, were held on Saturday, May 20, 1995 at 1:00 p.m. in the Valley Mortu- ary Chapel with Reverend Marvin Moon of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church officiating.


A 9-year Kem River Valley resident, Mrs. Glosser was bom January 5, 1926 in Decatur, Illi- nois, and entered into rest on May 15, 1995. A homemaker, she was a member of the Ladies of the Moose and loved the outdoors and fishing. She also really en- joyed people.


Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Glosser, of Bodfish; a son, Thomas Glosser, of Whittier, a daughter, Trudy Womack, of Fontana; and three grandsons.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Lung Association, 306 Chester Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93301.

Mollie Belle Clark


Private services were held for Mollie Belle Clark. She passed away in Bakersfield on May 20. Mollie was bom on July 24, 1900. She was 94 at her passing. She was bom in Lake Charles, Loui- siana.


Mollie was the youngest of six children, all of which were or- phaned and each adopted by different families. Mollie was the youngest of the six. She was only nine months old when she was adopted.


Mollie leamed of her adoption and that she had five brothers and sisters when she was 29 years old. Even though they were adopted separately, they all got together after' learning of their plight. The get-together was sponsored by the Bell Telephone Company.


Immediately upon her being adopted her new family moved to Sawtelle, Califomia. At the age of four she moved to Gold Hill, Or- egon where she lived until she met and married Frank B. Clark. Together they moved to Oakland in 1921 and remained there until 1945 at which time she moved to Merced, Califomia where she and her husband opened a record store called "Record Rendez- vous". Mollie wrote poetry and lyrics to which her husband put music to. In 1948 she moved back to the Los Angeles area and finally moving to the Onyx area in 1988.


She is survived by two sons, David of Sacramento, Ca, and Robert of Stanton, Ca; a daughter Martha Petersen of Onyx, Ca; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, and a host of friends. Mollie was a real home- body and her family and friends will greatly miss her.

Charles L. "Buster" Clifton


Private services were held for "Buster" Clifton who passed away on May 24 with his family by his side.


Buster was bom on January 12, 1914 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He moved to Bakersfield in the mid 1930's where he owned and operated his own mechanic's shop in Lamont. In 1968 he moved to the Weldon area where he baled hay. Many of the ranchers in the valley called on him to fix their hay balers when they would break down. He was always ready and willing to help them fix their hay balers.


Buster is survived by his wife, Louise M. Clifton of Weldon; brother Fred Clifton of Needles, California; sister Lavola Stock of Bakersfield; son Kenneth "Butch" Clifton and wife of Weldon; son Jack L. Clifton and wife of Bakersfield; six grandsons, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and many friends.


Buster will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him. Buster lived a full and great life and always had a story or two to tell. Stories that his family and friends will never forget.

Kemville United Methodist Church for Margaret Bina Fuller. Officiat- ing.was Pastor John Carpenter.


Mrs. Fuller was bom in Venice, Califomia on June 6, 1919, and passed away May 20, 1995, in Mt. Mesa, Califomia. She has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for 11 years. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Hugh of Wofford Heights; her daughterand son-in-law Elizabeth and Kenny Buttrey of Acton, Califomia and Chris and Michael Stettner of El Dorado Hills, Califomia; grand- daughters Cathrine and Katelynn Buttrey, and grandson Matthew Stellner.

Vivian Seay Smith


Private arrangements were made for Vivian Seay Smith who passed away May 25, 1995, in Mt. Mesa, Califomia.


She was bom in Indian Tern- tory, Oklahoma on February 22, 1905. She has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for 12 years and has lived at the nursing cen- ter in Mt Mesa for the past 3 years. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge. She is survived by her daughter Pat Phillips of Southlake; daughter Dorothy Crowell and David Sanchez of Weldon; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Sharon Sennet of Laguna Beach, Ca; 10 grandchildren, 18 great- grandchildren, and 3 great-great- grandchildren.

Joseph Charles DeMaio


Joseph Charles DeMaio was born on December 23, 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He en- tered into rest on May 31, 1995 in Mt. Mesa at the age of 75. Both of his parents were born in Italy and came to the U.S.A. before Joseph was born.


Joseph moved from Massachu- setts in the late 60's to reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. Later he made his move to California settling in the Hawthorne area. He also lived in the Ridgecrest area for several years before moving to the lake area dur- ing the 70's. Joe was an avid baseball fan as well as having a great love for children. He spent many hours making children happy. He had a part in establishing the


Alano Club and held offices such as treasurer, etc.


Nothing pleased Joe more then hopping on his hog and heading out on a challenging bike ride with the Modified Motorcycle Association. Just last year he made a trip to Laughlin, Nevada and bad an en- joyable trip. Joe loved his biker friends and considered each of them his family. It was said of Joe that he accepted everyone as they were. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.


Joe worked in Lake Isabella at John's Upholstering Shop up until the death of its owner, John.


It was discovered that Joe had Leukemia last October and had re- sided at the Kem Valley Hospital SNC since early in April.


Joe is survived by three broth- ers. Salvatore DeMaio of Agawam, Mass; Carmen DeMaio of East Hartford, Conn., and Althonse DeMaio of Springfield, Mass; two sisters, Rosina Rubino of Spring- field, Mass, Margaret Murdza of Chicopee Mass; several nieces and nephews and a great host of friends. Among the friends are Cynthia Frost and girls as well as Kenny and * Barbara Miller of Onyx.


Graveside funeral services were held at Kern River Valley Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 6th, with Reverend Raffel, interim Pas- tor of St. Judes Catholic Church, officiating. Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell Family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.

Nelda Jean Beaumont


Funeral services were held Wednesday May 31, 1995 at 1:00 p.m. at Valley Mortuary for Jeanne Beaumont of Kernville. Officating was Pastor John Carpenter of the


Kernville United Methodist Church.


Jeanne was born March 26, 1939, in Amarillo, Texas and passed away May 25, 1995 in Kernville. She lived in the Kern River Valley for 14 years. 1


She is survived by her mother Alice Yager of Mt. Mesa, her daugh- ters Tracie Beaumont of Carson City, Nevada and Tiffany Edwards of Laramie, Wyoming; son Jon Beaumont of Carson City, Nevada; grandaughter Crystal Bolin of Carson City, Nevada; and two brothers, Dan Caussey of New Mexico and Charles Caussey of Havilah, Ca. In Loving Memory of Margaret Bina Fuller


Margaret was born June 6, 1919 to Clifford and Cleo Smith in Venice, Ca. She is survived by her husband Hugh L. Fuller, daughter Chris, and son-in-law Michael Stettner; daughter Liz and son-in-law Ken Buttrey, and three grandchildren, Matthew Stettner, Catherine Buttrey, and Katelynn Buttrey.


Before marrying, she was a stunt girl in many major motion pictures. She appeared in numerous movies, including "Gone With The Wind", "Stagecoach", "Showboat", and many Johnnie Mack. Brown and Flash Gordon series. Later, she traveled the country as the first woman stage manager for the off Broadway production "Blythe Spirit".


Immediately following World War Il, she married Hugh L. Fuller, First Lieutenant in the infantry.


Fishing, hunting, swimming and golfing were only a few of the ac- tivities they enjoyed together for nearly 50 years. She and her hus- band raised their daughters in Granada Hills, California before retiring in Wofford Heights in 1984.


Her family will remember her most for her selfless dedication to them. A humble lady, always reach- ing out to help others. Her life has truly made a difference and she will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

William Wesley Alden


Graveside services, were held Monday, June 12, 1995, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. William was born in Calhoun, Missouri, on May 31, 1925. He entered into rest in the Memorial Hospital of Bakersfield at the age of 70 on June 7, 1995.


William left Missouri to join the Army Air Corp at the age of 18. He spent a hitch of three years in the Air Force. Towards the end of his tour of duty, he became engaged to Dixie Boyles who lived in Clinton, Missouri. She later followed him to San Antonio, Texas, where they were married. After his tour of duty was over in the Air Force, he returned to Missouri for about a year.


In 1946, he came to Califor- nia settling in Hawthorne. Shortly thereafter, he moved to Torrance, California, where he lived for 30 years and raised his family. In 1931, he moved to the lake area.


William loved the games of baseball and basketball and it was well known that he was not to be disturbed during a game.


He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Dixie Alden; one daughter, Sharon Williams of Henderson, Nevada; son, Wil- liam C. Alden of Cucamonga, California; sons David Philip Alder and Wesley J. Alden, both of Torrance, California; 10 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. William will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Douglas Eugene Burnett


Private family services and visitation were held for Douglas Eugene Burnett, 66, of Lake Isabella on Saturday, June 10, 1995 at the Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella.


A 1 year Kern River Valley resident, Mr. Bumett was bom May 3, 1929 in Glendale, Cali- fomia and entered into rest on


June 6, 1995 in a Bakersfield hospital. Before retirement, Mr. Burnett was a bus driver for the Orange County Transit District.


He is survived by his wife, Maureen Burnett of Lake Isa- bella; a son, Jess Eugene Burnett of Moreno Valley; two daughters, Brenda Burnett of Garden Grove, Susan Marie Clavet of Sun City; two grand- sons and two granddaughters. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Lorene E. Yeargan


Graveside services were held on June 7, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Memorial park in Bakersfield for Lorene Elizabeth Yeargan.


Mrs. Yeargan was born April 21, 1904 in Llano, Texas and entered into rest on June 3, 1995 at her home in Wofford Heights. She was 91 years of age. She has lived in Kern County for the past 51 years.


Mrs. Yeargan worked in the Wilmington ship yards during World War II as a welder and after moving to Bakersfield af- ter the war, worked for Roundtree Studios and then in 1955, joined her husband, "Snowball" in his business, Coyco Oil Well Service until his death in 1973. She moved to Wofford Heights in 1990. Lorene was 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.


Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Barbara Yeargan of Onyx; a sister, Dorothy Cawdrey of Westlake Village; grandsons, Chris Yeargan of North Dakota, Russ Yeargan of Wofford Heights, and Dale Yeargan, Jr. of Onyx; granddaughters, Chrissie Lopez, Tina Yeargan, Janet Holbrook, Dawn Lorene Carlon and Cynthisa Lee Peredoe, all of Bakersfield; her first cousin, Alice Frost of Yucca Valley; 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchil- dren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all who loved her.

Lulu AnnaMay Ruggles


Private arrangements were made for Lulu AnnaMay Ruggles who passed away on June 4, 1995 in Mt. Mesa, California.


She was bom May 28, 1916 in Jewell, Kansas. She was owner and operator of Lou's Coffee Shop in Santa Monica. Lulu has been in the Kern River Valley for 27 years. She worked at Miracle Hot Springs and The King Cow in Wofford Heights. She was a member of the Moose, the drill team of the Eagles, and IOOF Lodge since 1945. Her duties included fund raising and community service. Lulu also belonged to the Grandmothers Club. She loved fishing, traveling and dancing. She was a member of the Se- nior Citizens.


She is survived by her hus- band Ken Ruggles of Lake Isabella; her daughter and son- in-law Marlene and George Nichol of West Los Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Linda and Ted Martin of Bodfish; seven grandchildren, Christie, Deborah, Sherie, Virginia, George, Lance and Kathlene; eight great-grandchildren; step- daughter Sandra Moldenhaur of Hesperia, step-grandchildren Tammy, Corey, and Jamie and one step-great-grandson. Lulu is also survived by her brother Tommy and sister-in-law Pat Brokshire of Washington and brother L. Eugene Brokshire of Bodfish. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Delbert Milton Vester


Private services and inter- ment were held for Delbert Vester. Mr. Vester was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on June 4, 1924 and entered into rest at his home on June 14, 1995 at the age of 71.


Mr. Vester was self-em- ployed as a painter for the past 48 years. He also spent a hitch in the Navy during WWII from September 28, 1942 to January 15, 1946 as a Seaman 1st Class.


Delbert is survived by his wife, Gloria of 24 years; three sons, Steven Vester of Wofford Heights, Vincent Vester of Ventura, and Raymond Vester of Oregon.


One of Delbert's greatest loves was to take Gloria and head for the fishing hole. Many hours were spent along the shore in togethemess.


He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Gretta Aleda Rice


Graveside services with im- mediate family members were held in memory of Gretta Aleda Rice at her interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery on June 19, 1995. She was bom July 18, 1902 in Storm Lake, lowa, and passed away at the


Kem Valley Hospital Nursing Center in Mt. Mesa, Ca, June 17, 1995.


Gretta and her husband Basil retired to Kernville, Ca. in 1964. She was widowed in 1977. During her 31 years in the val- ley she had participated in the Antique and Collectible shows; she was an avid button collec- tor and member of the Pres- byterian Church during her lifetime and a member of Eastern Star.


She is survived by her son George B. Rice of Weldon, Ca. and daughter Babette DeMont of Litchfield Park, Az .; three granddaughters Charmaine Farmer of England, Ramona Guzman of Idaho and Juanita Hall of New Mexico; eight great- grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Barbara. Clauder


Funeral services were held Saturday June 17, 1995 at 11:00 AM at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella. Officiating was Dr. Marvin Moon. Interment was at Kem River Valley Cemetery. Dorothy was born July 1, 1907 in Watsonville, Califomia and passed away June 13, 1995 in Mt. Mesa, Califomia. She was 87 years of age. She has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for 17 years, and a member of the Women of the


Moose. She loved to dance and go to the beach. She also loved to crochet. She is survived by her daughter Barbara Carman Noel and Richard Smith of Simi Valley; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Charlotte Lackey of Kernville, son and daughter-in-law Ken- neth and Cathy Lackey of Lake Isabella and son Jaye Lackey of Downey, Ca. Also 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grand- children, 7 great-great-grand- children. She was loved by all, and will be greatly missed.

Creed (Sandy) Collins


Private arrangements were made for Creed (Sandy) Collins who passed away June 13, 1995 in Mt. Mesa, Ca. Sandy was bom in Rice, Kansas on December 25, 1910. He has been a resident of Kem County for 53 years and worked for U.S. Borax for 27 years before retiring and moving to the Kern River Valley. He was a member of the VFW and is survived by his nephew Robert Collins of Pacoima and his sister-in-law La Vina Collins also of Pacoima.

Graveside services were held Monday, June 12, 1995, at 11:00 a.m. at the Kem River Valley Cemetery. William was · bom in Calhoun, Missouri, on May 31, 1925. He entered into rest in the Memorial Hospital of Bakersfield at the age of 70 on June 7, 1995.
