Diane resided in the Kern River Valley for the past 12 years, and enjoyed painting, writing, genealogy, and de- signing clothes.


She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jennifer, and her brother Robert. She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Robert; brother James Sanders; daughter and son-in- law Victoria and Frank Chavez of La Crescenta; daughter Katherine Tyson of Bakersfield; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Genevieve Young


A graveside service was held Sept. 8, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Cemetery for Genevieve Young, formerly of the Kern River Valley. Officiat- ing was Pastor Floyd Castillo of Highland Chapel Methodist Church.


Genevieve was born Jan. 12, 1923, in Thompson, Pat, and died Sept. 1, 1999, in Scottsbluff, Neb. She was 76 years old.


Genevieve was a longtime resident of the Kern River Val- ley. She was a member of the Historical Society and a great collector of antiques. Her pas- sion was hunting for old bottles and arrowheads. She operated her own antique store in Ne- braska.


Genevieve is survived by son Jim Young of Lake Isabella; son Bill W. Young of Boise, Idaho; sister Lillian Miller of Mountain Mesa; sister Virginia Riviera of Escondido; seven grandchil- dren and eight great-grand- children.

Alice Dorothy Carlsen Clark Elfstrom


Alice Elfstrom was born on Dec. 5, 1905 in Boston and died on Sept. 10, 1999 in Sun City, Ariz. She moved with her family at the age of 3 to Sweden. When she was 18 she moved to Brooklyn, where she soon en- tered nursing school. Alice practiced as a public health nurse in New York until she retired.


She married F. Scott Clark in 1941 and lived on Albion, N.Y. Together they raised a wonder- ful, caring daughter, Janice. Scott passed away in 1959. Alice spent the next several years working as a nurse, car-


ing for and educating their . tended family. She was known daughter.


In 1974 Alice met Ernest Elfstrom, fell in love and mar- ried him on July 28, 1974. Ernest was a widower and has. three sons: Eugene and Warren of Seattle, and Robert from Yarnell, Ariz. Suddenly her family had grown by leaps and bounds. She is survived by 14 grandchildren, including: Adam and Wesley Rose of Carlsbad; Alita Elfstrom and John Beam, Jeff and Lana Elfstrom, Keith and Carey Elfstrom, all of Lake Isabella; Corey and Rick Kasinger of Frazier Park; and Tim Elfstrom of Phoenix. She also had 30 great-grandchil- dren.


Alice and Ernest led very active lives, being involved in the Masons, VASA, Elks and the Methodist Church. They traveled as often as possible, including trips to Sweden, Ha- waii, New Jersey, New York, Seattle and California to visit friends and family, including all of those children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ac- tivities at the Sun Valley Lodge, where they had lived for the last nine years, included the recent celebration of their 25th wedding annivesary.


Alice loved the water, the outdoors, Arizona and her ex- for her loving and caring ways and for her kindness to all those around her. She lived her life to the fullest for those 93-plus years and will live on in our hearts forever and ever.


Raymond B. Litz


Memorial services for Ray Litz, who passed away on Sept. 14, will be held Sept. 25, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Weldon United Methodist Church, 20021 Hwy. 178. The Reverend Charles R. White will officiate.


Ray was born (in 1934) and raised in Pasadena and moved to the Kern Valley in 1989. After serving in the U.S. Army, he . developed Competition Engi-


neering, an automotive machine shop in Altadena, specializing in Porsche, VW and Corvair work. This business is well known to Porsche owners around the world. Ray's knowl- edgeable and caring advice and honest work are well respected by many car enthusiasts.


Ray was a member of the Kern River Valley Historical Society, National Exchange Club, Porsche Club of America, and the 365 Registry. He en- joyed camping, traveling and restoring antique cars.


He is survived by his loving wife Ann; daughter Valerie Kim Litz; son Randy Litz; son John Fitzpatrick; sister Bette Leadman; sister Grace Hazen; sister Edith Watson; brother Irv- ing McCallum; and their fami- lies. He was loved by all who knew them.

Robert Gregory Atherley


A memorial service was held for Robert Atherley at the Lake Isabella Methodist Church on Sept. 18, 1999. Officiating was Pastor Chuck White.


Robert was a resident of the valley for 21 years. He enjoyed hanging out with his friends, swimming, and diving off rocks at the river. Unfortunately, a misjudgement of water depth proved fatal. Robert dived his last dive.


His death has been a dev- astating loss to all who knew him. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.


Survivors include his three children, Ashley, Aaron and Austin; mother Toddy (and Terry Brown and family); brother Nathan McCoy of lowa; father Greg Atherley of Beaumont, Texas; (his beloved Ma and . Papa) Betty Hershey of Lake Isabella and Gary Hershey of Beaumont; great-grandmother Hope Vincent of Lake Isabella; uncles Rod Hershey of Bakersfield and Mark, Randy and Jeff Atherley of Beaumont; aunts Heather and Lacie Hershey of Lake Isabella, and Tricia (and Bud, Ronnie, Donnie and Kenneth Haigler of Weldon) and Cindy and Heather of Beaumont; great-aunt and uncle Donna and Tony George of Bodfish; and finally Bobby McCloskey, Robert's oldest and closest friend since second grade; Larry Hayes, Kirk Allison, Doyle Wilson, Russell Koop, Kelly Holcomb, Doreena McCartney and many extended family members and friends.


Eva LaVon Johnson


A funeral service was held Sept. 16, 1999 at the Lakeside Chapel in Westminster Memo- rial Park for Eva LaVon Johnson, with interment following. Offici- ating was Father Darryl Lee.


Eva was born Jan. 7, 1917 in Henryetta, Okla., and died Sept. 13, 1999 in the Skilled Nursing Center in Mountain Mesa. She was 86 years old. Eva was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 7665 Eagles Auxiliary Aerie No. 3156.


She is survived by her hus- band of 38 years, Donald, of Mountain Mesa, son Don and his wife Dana Cupp of Whittier; son Gary and his wife Josie Chastain of Arizona; son Roy and his wife Linda Chastian of Arizona; son Monty and his wife Bonnie of Lake Isabella; son Eddie Chastain and his wife Joann of Long Beach; 26 grandchildren and 41 great- grandchildren.


John "Jack" Edward Addis


A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Eagles Lodge in Mountain Mesa; officiating will be the of- ficers of the Eagles Lodge with the VFW present.


John, who was known by many as Jack, was born in Pennyslvania on Oct. 31, 1940 and died in Weldon on Sept. 15, 1999.


Jack served in the Marine Corps from 1958 to 1961. He worked in the aerospace in- dustry for 30 years.


Jack is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Audrey, of Weldon; mother and step-father Mable and Frank Yelinek of Ohio; sister Kathy Currier and her husband Darcy of Ohio; brother Frank W. Yelinek Jr. and his wife Linda of Ohio; son Johnny Addis and his wife Laurie of Maryland; son Sean Addis and his wife Linda of Pennsyl- vania; son Daniel Addis; step- son Johnny Ridge and his wife Dotty of Dayton, Nev .; stepson Chuck Ridge of Long Beach; stepson Terry Bass of Los An- geles; stepdaughter Julia McNess and her husband Jerry of Carson City; stepdaughter Deborah Anderson and her husband Kevin of Torrance; and 13 grandchildren.


Jack was an avid bowler, fisherman, hunter and loved every other sport there was. He was a lifetime member and bartender of the Eagles Lodge. He will be missed by many friends and all of his family.

Alice Dorothy Carlsen Clark Elfstrom


Alice Elfstrom was born on Dec. 5, 1905 in Boston and died the fullest for those 93-plus on Sept. 10, 1999 in Sun City, years and will live on in our Ariz. She moved with her family hearts forever and ever.

Daniel Paul Taylor


Daniel Paul Taylor was born Sept. 30, 1918 in Willamina, Ore. and died Sept. 21, 1999 in Bakersfield.


He lived as a boy in Grant's Pass, Ore. and later graduated from Benson Polytechnical School in Portland. He joined the Navy in 1939 and was aboard the USS Marblehead in Java when the war started. Af- ter returning to the U.S. in 1942, he attended flight school and received his wings in Pensacola.


He then returned to the South Pacific and served until the war ended. He was employed by North American Aviation (Rockwell) in engineering flight test until his retirement in 1974. He then moved to Weldon.


He leaves his wife of 57 years, Helen; daughter Paulette Corso; grandsonsBrek Corso and his ' wife Melissa of San Diego; · Corby Corso and his wife Patricia of Saugus; and Roan and Taylor Corso of Carmel Valley.


A private family service was held. Dan was an avid fisherman and spent most days at the lake. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.


Larry Phillip Slough


Private arrangements were held for Larry Phillip Slough, who passed away on-Sept. 20 due to an auto accident in the Kem Canyon. Larry was born Aug. 20, 1940 in Bemidji, Minn. and was raised in Detroit. He moved to California in the early 1960s and lived in Ventura. He was an electrical contractor for 39 years before moving to Lake Isabella in 1990. He had many friend and always had a joke for everyone. Although he suffered from cancer he still wanted to work at "Our Place," which he owned with his wife Jaye. He would joke with everyone and play jokes on them. He was loved and liked by everyone who met him, even strangers. He touched all who met him.


He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Jaye, of Lake Isabella; sons Randy and Troy Slough of Ventura and Tom Cliborne of Ridgecrest; and daughter Tiffany Holtze of Santa Barbara.

Rose Marie Cloud


Rose Marie Cloud passed away on Sept. 17, 1999 at Kern Valley Hospital.


Bom March 9, 19.19 in St. Louis, Rose Marie was adopted as an infant by Rose and Milton Goldbaum. She had one brother, Milton. As a young girl, her mother remarried William Campbell and the family moved to Beverly Hills. As a very young girl, Rose Marie's mother was an actress and later the gov- erness for the Marx Brothers' family in Beverly Hills.


She attended Beverly Hills High and in 1935 married Roy Cloud. They lived their entire married life in California, in Los Angeles, Porterville, Eagle Rock and La Crescenta. Before re- tirement, Rose Marie worked for many years as an attorney in a collection agency in the Los Angeles area. Before starting their family, Rose Marie and Roy traveled throughout the state riding motorcycles. She was very supportive of her husband's love of motorcycles and cars, and they introduced their children at a very early age to racing Roy's homemade quarter midgets, which won· many races.


Upon Roy's retirement, they moved to Weldon 22 years ago, where they enjoyed the life they had always wanted. With a life- long love for animals, they were finally able to raise a variety of


animals. It didn't take long tor Rose Marie to get involved in the community and she was soon involved with the Women of the Moose, the needlework club Happy Hookers, and was on the Weldon water board, as well as many other activities. She had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke. She was very talented in handwork, es- pecially knitting and crocheting, as well as most other crafts. She also loved playing games of all kinds, and enjoyed saving her spare change to test her luck in Las Vegas.


Rose Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy; her brother Milton; and nephew, Bob. She is survived by her two children- son Allan and daughter-in-law Debbie, and daughter Linda and son-in- law Kurt Swanson. She also had four grandsons, Chad Swanson, Travis Swanson, Casey Cloud and Cory Cloud, and six great-grandchildren.


No formal services are planned. The family would like to thank Helen Taylor, Joanie Collins, Bernice Hamilton, the . Happy Hookers, and other friends and neighbors for their love and special caring over the past few years for Rose Marie, as well as the ICU nurses at Kern Valley Hospital for helping make her final days as com- fortable as possible.

Marjory Belle Brinson


Marjory Belle Brinson was born on July 4, 1920 to Gus and Katie Reid in Jackson, Mo. She entered into a new life with her Lord and Saviour on Sept. 27, 1999 in Monument, Colo. while visiting her oldest daughter and family. Marjorie married Harold Brinson on March 26, 1936 and they shared a wonderful 49 years together until his death in 1988.


Together they raised six children: Ted Brinson of Whittier; Loren Brinson of Moreno Valley; Juleen Edwards of Monument, Colo .; Jody Melby of Lake Isa- bella, Jill Hood of Weldon and Guy Brinson of Southlake.


Besides being blessed with loving sons, daughters and in- laws, she also had 15 grand- children. She and Harold lived in Bell Gardens for 39 years and raised their family there before moving to Lake Isabella 19 years ago.


Marjory was a devoted, lov- ing and caring mother, grand- mother and friend. She loved her family, her church and her God, and was a faithful prayer warrior. She had a heart of compassion and one of her greatest joys in life was helping those in need.


Marjory left her family a wonderful inheritance, having raised her children with the knowledge of who Jesus Christ is and how they could have life everlasting by accepting Him as Lord and Savior into their hearts-an inheritance that will last eternally.


She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Brinson, father Guyus Reid, mother Katie Reid, brothers Tommy and Edward Reid and sister Vionna Floyd. She will be greatly missed.

Lois Marie Racicot


Cremation arrangements were made for Lois Marie Racicot, who died at her resi- dence in Weldon.


Lois was born Nov. 28, 1933 in Eau Claire, Wisc. She died Sept. 28, 1999 in Weldon. She was 65 years old.


She is survived by her hus- band of 24 years, Emest Racicot of Weldon; sons Paul Gutierrez; Mike Aycock, Lenny Aycock, Ben Aycock, Larry Aycock, Dennis Aycock; daughter Karen Lewellen; brothers Jim Peterson, John Peterson, Chub Peterson, Richard Peterson; sisters Sharon Wallauer and Lorraine Macuse; and 10 grandchildren.

Arden Westfall Hofer


Arden Westfall Hofer of Onyx died· Sept. 23, 1999 at San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield. He was 83.


Mr.Hofer was born in Simla, Coło. on July 1916 to Gladys Lovie Chapin and William Hofer. In 1939 he married Jeanice Buss in Colorado Springs. They were to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 7.


Mr. Hofer served in the U.S. Navy, moved his family to China Lake in 1946, and retired from public works after 32 years of service. He and Jeanice then moved to Onyx where he con- tinued his pastimes of garden- ing and woodworking. He was a member of NARFE, American Legion and Mended Hearts. He lived by the Golden Rule, a very kind and gentle person.


He is survived by his wife, Jeanice; sons Wes and Don of Seal Beach; daughter and son- in-law Law Ardyce and Marv McGowan of Ridgecrest; grandchildren Darcy McGowan of Portland, Ore. and Alison McGowan of Phoenix; brother Jim Garrison of Cortez, Colo .; and many nieces and nephews. A daughter, Linda Dale, and six brothers and sisters preceded him in death.


Services and interment will be held in Simla, Colo.

Naomi Geraldine "Gerri" Altman


Gerri Altman was born to Elonza and Agnes Fitzgerald of Vandergrift, Pa., on Nov. 8, 1911. She passed away at her Southlake residence on Oct. 3, 1999. She had been a resident of the lake area for the past 28 years. Gerri was a real rock and anchor to her family, a real lady of peace, filled with humor and loved by all. She had bunches and bunches of love for her family.


Memorial services were held at her Southlake residence on Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. with her loving family officiating. Private inurnment was held. Gerri had one daughter, Karen Lou Wa- ters, who preceded her in death. She is survived by grandchildren Charlotte Lee Ruse, Deon Geraldine DeSantis and Wally Laird Walters; nine great- grandchildren, ten great-great grandchildren; and one special great-granddaughter who was her caregiver, Kathleen Louise Jackson.


The services were entrusted to the care of the Bonewell Family of the Lake Isabella Fu- neral Home.


Richard Edward Sandlin


Richard Edward Sandlin, 75, huband, Robert H. Easton, of died Sept. 30, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Barbara J. Sandlin of Wofford Heights; sons Robert Sandlin of Wofford Heights and Tom Sandlin and Doug Sandlin of Kernville; daughter Sharon Storm of Laguna Niguel; and brothers John Sandlin of Vallejo and Norman Sandlin of Hamilton, Ohio. He was blessed with three granddaughters, Shelly Storm, Krystal and Lau- rel Sandlin and one grandson, Greg Storm. He was a deco-


rated veteran of WWII. He re- tired from the post office in Ventura in 1985 and also worked for Halliburton-Welex Oil Co. as an engineer for a num- ber of years.


·A memoral service was held on Oct. 7 at the VA cemetery in Riverside.


Dorilla Frances Easton


A memorial service was held for Fran Easton, beloved wife and mother, on Oct. 9, 1999 at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Valley Mortuary in Lake Isabella.


Fran was born Aug. 2, 1922 in Long Beach. She grew up in Huntington Park and was a graduate of Huntington Park High. She married Robert Henry Easton of Loves Park, Ill., on May 31, 1942. They settled in Granada Hills and had four children.


Fran loved and was well known for her beautiful sewing and remarkable craftsmanship. She was always designing or creating something for some- one. Along with this passion she loved to travel with her husband, Bob, all over the continental U.S. Her talents and travels ended when cancer closed her eyes and quieted her hands.


She is survived by her Mtn. Mesa; daughter Jeanne Frances Weishaar of de Funiak Springs, Fla .; son Dale Lee Easton and wife Sue of Antioch; daughter Janet Lee Gibson and husband Dean of Canyon Country; grandchildren Darrell Grisham, Jim Grisham, Brent La Bier, Glenn Easton, Derrick Easton, Trevor Easton, Gideon Gibson and Shannon Gibson; and great-grandchildren Danielle Grisham, Austin La Bier and Jordan La Bier.


She is preceded in death by a son, Robert Glenn Easton, who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1961.


The family wishes to extend their deepest sympathy and gratitude to Hoffman Hospice of the valley for their dedicated professionalism and compas- sion during their loved one's last precious days. They made this difficult time bearable and they made our loved one com- fortable.

Memorial services are pending for Marcia Hendrickx, who passed away on Oct. 3, 1999 in Mtn. Mesa.


Marcia was born on March 12, 1931, in Rochester, N.Y. Marcia was active in the Hospital Auxiliary and HICAP. She was also a member of the VFW and Women of the Moose.


Marcia is survived by two wonderful sons, Brad and Ross; grandchildren Tony and Kristine; brother and sister-in- law Bob and Elaine Laman of Memphis; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen Louise Thornton


Private arrangements were made for Helen Thornton, who passed away Oct. 11, 1999 at her home.


Helen was born in Fresno on Dec. 13, 1932 and resided here in the Kern Valley for the last six years, moving from the Antelope Valley.


Helen was a professional artist, and enjoyed painting and making jewelry. She was also very active in Girl Scouts, Brownies, FFA and the arts. . She loved horses.


Helen is survived by her husband of 52 years, Clayton; daughters Cindy and Vickie; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Helen Blanch Bucon


A Mass for Christian burial was celebrated Oct. 23,.1999 at 9 a.m. at St. Jude's Catholic Church for Helen Blanch Bucon. Officiating was Father Raja Perera.


Helen was born June 11, 1919 in Jenny Lynn, Arkansas and passed away on Oct. 21, 1999 at her home in Weldon. She was a resident of Kern County for 60 years. She was a member of the Altar Society at St. Jude's, and she enjoyed sewing and fishing and her dogs and cats.


She is survived by her hus- band of 54 years, Anthony Bucon of Weldon and her sisters Ellen Dumphy, Betty Fargo, Therisa Cory and Blanch.

Eleanor Ruth Ramsey


Eleanor Ruth Ramsey passed away Oct. 21, 1999, following a long illness. She was bom Jan. 24, 1921, in Yuma, Ariz. She was raised in the Kern Valley and returned to spend the last 20 years here. She worked as a dental assistant and receptionist for about 30 years. For the last 10 years of


her employment she worked for Dr. Rushton in Lake Isabella. She was a member of the local Woman's Club in Kernville.


She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth James Blount, and her father, John Potter. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Robert Ramsey of Kernville; son Wil- liam (and Laurel) Ramsey of Canyon Country; daughter Judy (and Rick) Desjardin of Yorba Linda; grandchildren Aimee Bowers of Placentia, Ryan Ramsey of Jacksonville, Fla., Robyn Ramsey of San Diego, and Gary Bowers of Yorba Linda; great-granddaughter Al- exandria Bowers of Placentia; brother Howard (Barbara) Pot- ter of Rowland Heights; and sister June Morrell of Kernville.


She is remembered for her devotion to her husband of 59 years, as well as for her love and dedication to her children, grandchildren and great- . grandchild. She had a dry sense of humor that sometimes went unrecognized. Her family and friends cherished her and will miss her greatly.


A memorial service will be held at the Kernville Methodist Church on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a lun- cheon at her church.

Wilbur Francis Vance


Memorial services were held at 11:00 on Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights for Wilbur Vance, who passed away on Oct. 21, 1999 in Bakersfield.


Wilbur moved here in 1956 and worked for Southern Cali- fornia Edison for 30 years and managed the Kernville Airport for 20 years. Wilbur owned his own airplane and enjoyed fly- ing. He also sold mobile homes in the Kern River Valley for some time.
