Odos Redfern


Memorial services were held on Saturday, March 21, 1998, for Mr. Odos Earl Redfern of Bodfish. Odos entered eternal life on March 17, 1998. He was born on Oct. 11, 1942, in Gerard, Kan., to his parents Elmer Harold Redfern and Helen Pearl Redfern, along with five other siblings; he was a proud father of four.


During his life, Odos Redfem was a strong willed fellow, with a good love of life, and pride in his family. He later served his country as a proud member of the United States Navy and went on to work in a field where he helped to improve the com- munity with his service in the Department of Parks and Rec- reation.


Odos Redfern is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Redfern, of Bodfish; as well as four sons, Odos Redfern Jr. of Bodfish; Earnest Adams of Maricopa, Calif .; William Charles Redfern of Taft; and Jackie Ray Redfern of Bakersfield; several grand- children, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by those who loved and liked him.

George Cecil Gehr


A memorial service was held Saturday, April 4, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella, for George Cecil Gehr. Officating was Pas- tor Dave Snow. Graveside ser- vices were held Monday April 6, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. in Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, Calif. Officiating was Chaplain Henry Sanchez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.


Mr. Gehr was born Dec. 1, 1929 in Santa Monica, Calif., and passed away March 31, 1998 in Mt. Mesa.


He has been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 11 years. He was Vice President of the Kern Valley Gun Club and a member of the First Bap- tist Church of Lake Isabella. He enjoyed woodworking and. gardening.


He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jennie Gehr, of Wel- don; his son and wife, David and Suzy Gehr, of Big Bear, Calif .; son, Michael Gehr, of Northridge, Calif .; daughter, Georgina, and husband, Bruce Bonfert, of Simi Valley, Calif .; son, Charles, and wife, Susan Gehr, of Louisville, Colo .; brother and wife, William and Robin Gehr, of La Canada, Calif .; seven grandchildren, Erin, Scott, Jacqueline, Cameron, Tevis, Adrian, and Deshae.

Moline Copeland Behrens


Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 31, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapei for Moline Copeland Behrens. Officiating was Pas- tor Carlos Fandino of the Church of the Nazarene in Lake Isabella.


Mrs. Behrens was born July 8, 1913 in Ada, Okla. and went to be with the Lord on March 28, 1998 in Mt. Mesa. She was a resident of the Kern River Valley for the last 18 years. She was a graduate of Baylor University in Texas and a En- glish teacher for 30 years. She loved quilting and was very active in her church.


She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Larry Holochwost, of Lake Isabella; son and daughter-in- law, Patrick and Diana Behrens, of Arizona; brother and his wife, Eber L. and Jo Copeland, of Kansas; brother- in-law, Clarence Lang, of Mt. Mesa; brother and his wife, Paul and Barbara Copeland, of Arizona; grandchildren, Mat- thew and Bonnie Holochwost, Andrew Holochwost, Erin Pulcher, Jennifer Remtema, and Samuel Behrens; great- grandchildren, Ryan and Kalie; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Hurlon Jack Burlison


Hurlon Jack Burlison passed on Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Kern Valley Hospital, at the age of 88. He was born in Baldwin, Miss., on Sept. 9, 1909, son of Florence and James Burlison.


Before coming to the Kern River Valley in 1970, Jack was involved in building mainte- nance engineering in Chicago and Los Angeles, and was a member of the Chicago Build- ing Superintendents Associa- tion.


His parents, brother Robert C. Burlison, and sister Grace R. Burlison, preceded him in death. His wife for 45 years, Alice M. Burlison; his son, Vernon Lloyd Schultz, of Downers Grove, Ill .; and his daughter, Elizabeth J. Lewis, of Bakersfield, survive him. Also, his grandchildren Randy Goodison of Bakersfield; Jen- nifer Lynn Struck of Carol Stream, III .; Vernon Lloyd Schultz III and Ryan Adam Schultz of Downers Grove, III .; a niece, Roberta Winker, and five great-grandchildren sur- vive him.


A celebration of life will be held at Weldon United Meth- odist Church on Friday, April 3, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate that any donations be made to the Memorial Fund at the Weldon United Methodist Church.


Fred Lewis Thompson


Fred Lewis Thompson, a long time resident of Lake Isa- bella, passed away on March 28, 1998 in Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster at the age of 86.


He was born in Council Bluffs lowa, July 30, 1911. He moved to California with his wife, Mildred in 1936. He worked for the L.A. County Transit District for 35 years. He retired in 1971 and moved to Lake Isabella with his wife Mildred, who pre- ceded him in death in 1979. He later married Eleanor who passed away in 1994. Fred was also known by many as the Bird Man of Lake Isabella.


He is survived by sons Gary Thompson and Greg Thomp- son; daughter-in-law Pat; three grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

Betty Lucille (Cope) Richie Johnson


Funeral services for Betty Lucille (Cope) Richie Johnson, 77, of Park Hill, Okla., formerly of Lake Isabella, were held March 14, 1998 in Tahlequah, Okla. Burial followed in Tahlequah City Cemetery un- der the direction of Hart Fu- neral Home of Tahlequah.


Betty was born November 10, 1920 in Jackson, Ky., the daughter of Fred and Mary (Bryan) Cope and died Tues- day, March 10, 1998 at Tahlequah City Hospital.


A former waitress and cook, she was married to Howard Johnson of Lake Isabella for the past 35 years. Betty was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Okmulgee Chap- ter, since 1960.


Her parents, sister Mary Carter and her children's fa- ther, Dennis Richie, preceded her in death.


She is survived by her hus- band, Howard Johnson of Lake Isabella; two sons, Dennis Bryan Richie of Park Hill and Donald Bruce Richie and wife,


Mary, of Welling; one stepson, Jerry Johnson of Palm Springs; two sisters, Marjorie Mahon and husband, John, of Louis- ville, Ky .; and Barbara Standefer of Mt. Pleasant, S.C .; two grandchildren, Sendi Denise Palmer and husband, John Nicholas Palmer of Mem- phis, Tenn. and Jonathan Ma- son Richie of Park Hill; one great-granddaughter, Adrienne Elise Palmer; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.


Stella M. Cossey


Stella passed away April 3, 1998 in Weldon. Viewing will be Wednesday, April 8, 1998 from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Hillcrest Mortuary. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park's Gar- den of Peace.


Stella was born Dec. 16, 1912, in Wanette, Okla., to Claude Renfro and Ora Tomlinson Renfro. She mar- ried Fred Cossey on Oct. 21, 1930, in Wanette, Okla. They moved to California in 1944 and lived in Arvin for many years before moving to Wel- don in 1970.


Stella loved to garden and took great pride in the fruit and vegetables she grew. She en- joyed cooking and canning jams and jellies.


She is survived by her sons Bill Cossey of Weldon, Calif., Wiley Cossey of Nuevo, Calif., Bob Cossey of Weldon, and daughters Wanda Thompson of Lamont, , Martha Morgan of Red Oak, Okla., and Glenda Dornan of Bakersfield. She is also survived by grandchildren and more than 50 great-grand- children and great-great- grandchildren. She is also sur- vived by her brother, Jack Renfro and sisters, Effie Calhoun, Sadie Shaw, Eva Renfro and Geneva Baker of Oklahoma.

Lois Charlotte Brown


Graveside services were held Wednesday, April 8, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale for Lois Charlotte Brown. Officiat- ing was Minister Patricia Denton of Science of Life Church.


Lois was born to her par- ents, William and Evalyn Morton in Milwaukee, Wis. on July 17, 1897 and died in Moun- tain Mesa on April 5, 1998 at the age of 100 years and 9 months. She lived a long full life. Lois was a resident of the Kern River Valley since 1986. She came from Wisconsin and always said, "I'm a city girl." She lived through four wars and four earthquakes.


She is survived by her by daughter, Evalyn Benedict, of Wofford Heights; niece, Ruth Janzen, of Wisconsin; great- niece, Maris Edwards, also of Wisconsin; and grandchildren, Dustin, Linda and Bryan Woods of Valencia.


Moline Copeland Behrens


Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Moline Copeland Behrens. Officiating was Pastor Carlos Fandino of the Church of the Nazarene in Lake Isabella.


Mrs. Behrens was born July . 8, 1913 in Ada, Okla .; and went. 4


to be with the Lord on March 28, 1998 in Mountain Mesa. She was a resident of the Kern River Valley for the last 18 years. A graduate of Baylor University in Texas and a En- glish teacher for 30 years. She loved quilting and was very active in her church.


She is survived by her hus- band of 59 years, Leroy Behrens; daughter and son-in- law, Toni and Larry Holoch- wost, of Lake Isabella; son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Diana Behrens, of Arizona; brother and his wife, Eber. L. and Jo Copeland, of Kansas; brother-in-law, Clarence Lang, of Mountain Mesa; brother and his wife, Paul and Barbara Copeland, of Arizona; grand- children, Matthew and Bonnie Holochwost, Andrew Holoch- wost, Erin Pulcher, Jennifer Remtema, and Samuel Behrens; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kalie; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Denton Garner


Denton Garner, age 95, passed away April 3, 1998 at the Kern Valley Hospital Nurs- ing Center in Mountain Mesa. He was born Oct. 23, 1902 in Clark County, Wis. He was married to Gloria Garner, now deceased. They had no chil- dren.


Mr. Garner retired from the Civil Service, Yuma Test Sta- tion, Yuma, Ariz. He was an outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and mak- ing hunting knives.


He is survived by his nephew Marty Garner, of Tehachapi; nephew, Harold Garner, of Palos Verdes; nieces, Patsy Danskin, of Burbank; and Cathy Flint, of Harbor City; as well as many great-nephews and nieces and great-great- nephews and nieces.


A memorial service will be held for Denton on Saturday, April 18, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Wofford Heights Foursquare Church on Panorama and Sy- - camore in Wofford Heights.

Norman Lionel Broome


Norman L. Broome of Wof- ford Heights passed away on March 23, 1998 at Mercy Hos- pital in Bakersfield at the age of 76. He was born in Schnectady, N.Y. and moved to Hollywood in 1926. His par- ents were Aubrey and Ethel Broome.


He served in the R.O.T.C. at Hollywood High School and enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942, serving four years during World War II.


Mr. Broome married in 1947 to Mary Ann Porter. They had three children. They moved to the Kern River Valley in 1975 where he continued to work in the aerospace industry until 1981. He and his son, Joe, owned and operated Broome and Son Engineering and Welding in Lake Isabella.


While vacationing in 1989, he found his long lost brothers, Don Johnson, of Seattle, Wash., and William Johnson, of Salem, Ore., whom he had not seen in 48 years.


He is survived by his wife, of 51 years, Mary; daughter, Audrey Holiman, of Phoenix; son, Joseph, and wife, Cindy, of Bakersfield; daughter, Norma Jean Banner, and hus- band, Michael, of Idaho; and twin brother, Henry, of Ana- heim; brothers, Don Johnson and William Johnson. Also sur- viving is a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Ann Broome, of Lake Isabella; grandchildren, Levi, Leah, Allan and Shirley, Chris- topher, Crystal; great-grand- children Carrissa, Brycene, Shantele, Logan and J.J .; and many nieces, nephews, cous- ins, brothers-in-law and sisters-

Mildred Leona Garrison


Memorial services were held Dec. 21, 1997, in Morro Bay, for Mildred Leona Garrison, age 84. She was born Sept. 9, 1913 in Denver, and passed away Dec. 20, 1997 at her home in Morro Bay.


Mildred lived in the Lake Isa- bella area from 1978 to 1993 when she retired from the U.S. Forest Service. She was ac- tive with the Senior Center in Lake Isabella.


She is survived by her daughter, Shellie Barry, of Morro Bay; grandchildren, Kelly James Barry and Clinton Robert Barry; great-grand- daughter, Alicia May Barry; brother Melvin Moore of Simi Valley; sister Etta Marie Wertz of Highland, Mich. Mildred was a wonderful mother and friend to all who knew her.

Leroy Odel Nelson


Funeral services were held Friday, April 10, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Leroy Odell Nelson. Offici- · ating was Pastor Deryl Lackey of Mt. View Southern Baptist Church of Lake Isabella. Burial followed at Kern River Valley Cemetery in. Wofford Heights.


Leroy was born to his par- ents, Frederick and Pearle Nelson in Sharon Springs, Kan. on Jan. 21, 1912 and died in Mountain Mesa on April 5, 1998, at the age of 86. Mr. Nelson retired after 25 years of service with Orowheat Bread Company and was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 26 years with his wife, Mildred.


He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mildred; daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Bill Campbell, of Wofford Heights; daughter, Donna Franklin, of Denver, Colo .; and grandchildren, Rod Barrett, Randy Barrett, Rhonda Lewis, Gary Campbell, Steve Campbell, Cheryl DeLeon, Mark Campbell and 15 great- grandchildren.


Leroy enjoyed gardening very much. He was always helping people and will be greatly missed by all.

Curtis Thomas Garrett


Memorial services were held .Tuesday, April 21, 1998 at 2 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Curtis Thomas Garrett. Of- ficiating was Pastor Deryl Lackey of Mt. View Southern Baptist Church.


Mr. Garrett was born Dec. 25, 1906 in Santa Monica and passed away on April 14, 1998 in Mt. Mesa. He was 91 years of age. He worked at China Lake Naval Station for 25 years


and was a resident of the Kern Valley for 40 years. He was a past member of the Elks and the CB Club. He enjoyed fish- ing, hunting and photography.


He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Garrett; his son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Ruby Garrett of Ridge- crest; two granddaughters, Tracy and Kriste; and two great- grandchildren, Winter and Garrett; as well as a sister, Isabella Wilson of Arizona.

Dorothy Ann Lucas


Dorothy Ann Lucas passed away April 10, 1998, in Bakers- field Memorial Hospital at age 66. She was born Dorothy Ann Toeckes, June 11, 1931, in Great Falls. Mont. Dorothy lived and worked many years in Bell Gardens, Calif., where she raised her three children. Eigh- teen years ago she purchased a trailer in the Harbor Lights Mobile Home Park in Mountain Mesa for her and her children to vacation in. She joined the Eagles Auxiliary Aerie 3156 in Mountain Mesa and has kept her membership for many years. In 1996, her children having grown up, she moved to her vacation home, where she became active in the lodge. -


Survived by: daughter, Belinda Pansky of Downey, Calif .; Sons, Robert Laudermilk of Mountain Mesa, & Dale Hurst of Bell Gardens, Calif .; broth- ers & sisters, Theresa, Charles & Willard of Mont .; Albert & Donald of Canada; Izzy & sis- ter Mary of Wash .; sister-in- law Mary Kay of Kan .; adopted sister; Rena Hines of Trona, Calif .; long time loving friend, Jerry Pavey of Bell Gardens; four grandchildren, many nieces & nephews and many many loving friends who will miss her greatly. She was pre- ceded in death by husband Carl; her parents & her brother George.


Services were held April 15 at Saint Raymond's Catholic Church in Downey, Calif., and buried at Park Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Bell Gardens.

Funeral services were held Friday April 24, 1998 at 1:30 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Mildred Ruth Nelson. Offici- ating was Pastor Deryl Lackey. Mildred was born Oct. 20, 1914 in Orlando, Oklahoma and passed away April 18, 1998 at her home in Wofford Heights. She has been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 26 years. She enjoyed sewing, going to garage sales and refunding. She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy on April 5, 1998 and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Yvonne and Bill Campbell and daughter Donna Franklin and brother and sister-in-law Joe and Marie Sallenberger and seven grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren and one niece and two nephews. She will be missed by all. She has gone home to be with her hus- band and the Lord. Arrange- ments by Valley Mortuary.


Frank Ivan Bonner


Graveside services were held Thursday April 23, 1998 at 2 p.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Frank Ivan Bonner, who died as a result of


"an construction accident on Monday April 20, 1998 in Wof- ford Heights.


Frank was born June 7, 1937 in Flint, Michigan. He has lived in the Kern River Valley for 50 years and been a Heavy Equip- ment Operator for over 30 years. He was a member of the NRA and the Kern County Gun Club and the Operating Engi- neers Union. He was an outdoorsman and avid hunter. He was very well known and loved. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Arlene Bonner of Lake Isabella and son Tony and wife Amy Bonner of Utah, father Ivan Bonner of Arroyo Grande, One grandchild, brother & sister-in-law, Sam & Ann Bonner of Bakersfield, sis- ter-in-law Marilyn Olson of Bod- fish, brother-in-law & wife Eu- gene and Mary Apalatea and brother-in-law Alvin Apalatea and best friend Howard Bailey, and many aunts, uncles, neph- ews and nieces.


Honorary Bearers were Howard Bailey, Naylon Ouarnberg, Royce Smith, Frank Jackson, Joe Thomas, Jim Young, Bruce Steward and Joe Leonardi. Frank will be greatly missed.

Alva "Ab" Bounds


A memorial service will be held Wednesday April 29, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge #2358 in Wofford Heights for Alva Bounds of Kernville. Officiat- ing will be the Officers of the Elks Lodge #2358.


Ab was born Aug. 6, 1909 in Texas and died at Kern Valley Hospital April 19, 1998. He was 89 years old.


Ab was a member of the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge #2358, and a member of the Kern River Valley Golf Course.


Ab is survived by his sons Bruce Bounds of Nash, Texas, Allen Roy Bounds of Porterville, Calif., 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and his many friends here in the Kern River Valley.

Etta Mae Rotan


Graveside services were held Friday April 24, 1998 at 10 a.m. at Kern River Valley Cem- etery for Etta Mae Rotan. She passed away April 14, 1998 in San Joaquin Hospital, Bakers- field.


She was born June 18, 1925 in Texas. She lived in the Kern River Valley for over 25 years. She is survived by her daugh- ter Judy Sullins of Lake Isa- bella; son William Rotan of Lake Isabella; grandchildren, Amanda Sullins of Bakersfield, Shannon Sullins of Lake Isa- bella, Carl and Tammy Sullins of Lake Isabella.


She will also be missed by great-grandchildren, Jaymie, and Jeffrey Sullins of Lake Isa- bella and Joshua Anderson of Lake Isabella. She's loved by everyone.

William Sharpe


Former Kernville resident, William Sharpe, died at the age of 80 on April 7, 1998 of com- plications from pneumonia. He and his wife, Ellen, purchased the Pala Ranches Motel and moved to Kernville in 1959. They had sold the motel when they retired and lived near New- port, Oregon. He is survived by his wife, Nedra Joham of South Beach, Ore; daughter, Nancy Sharpe, Weed, Calif .; son Ken- neth Sharpe, Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandchildren: Tracy Wells, San Diego, Wendy Wells, Weed, Calif., Darrin Sharpe, Seattle, Wash., and Kirra Sharpe, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., along with three great-grand- children.

Wayne E. Smith


Wayne E. Smith, 79, passed away of cancer early Friday, May 1, 1998, at Kern Valley Hospital in Mountain Mesa. Mr. Smith was a Florence, (Rankin County) Miss. native. He was a veteran of World War II serv- ing in the Navy in various the- atres. He had lived a number of years in Long Beach, Calif. and retired from being a Mainte- nance Engineer. He had been a resident of Kernville since 1978, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Kern- ville.

Ellen Lee Smolinsky


Services were held Wednes- day, April 29, 1998 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella for Ellen Lee Smolinsky. Officiating was Dr. David Snow, Pastor of First Baptist. Ellen was born Aug. 22, 1931 in Smithfield, N.C. She later moved to Southern California, where she met and married Stanley Smolinsky on June 5, 1975. They moved to the valley March 1989.

Survivors include her be- loved husband, Stan and her brother, Guy Douglas Harmon of Durham, N.C.


Ellen loved her Lord and was a very active member of her church. She served in the Shepherd Ministry, where she loved and cared for her "sheep." Survivors include: wife of 58 years, Lola; son Donald Wayne Smith, Long Beach, Calif .; daughter, Dinah Lorraine Smith of Cerritos, Calif .; sister and brother-in-law Bill and Eloise S. Purvis of Florence, Miss .; grandson and wife Craig and She was active in Women's Bible Study, the American Bap- tist Women's Ministry and had a special love for all people .. Roxie Slawson Linton

Services for Roxie Ellen Slawson Linton, 75, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of Christ with Roy Hannah offici- ating. Interment will be at Ringling Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home.


Born May 29, 1922, at Grady, to John L. and Bessie Miller Slawson, she died April 28, 1998, in Boise, Idaho.

Reared at Ringling, Okla:, she married James Durwood Linton Aug. 24, 1940, at Healdton, Okla., and lived in Ringling where she managed the telephone company 14 years. They moved to Lake Isabella and lived there 30 years before moving to DeKalb, Texas, then to Bruneau, Idaho, in 1992. She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 14, 1996; a daughter, Donnie Linton, Feb. . 27, 1941; and brother, Terry Slawson, 1996.

Survivors include a daugh- ter, Gerri Alsip, Grand View, Idaho; four sisters, Evelyn Paul, Ringling, Okla .; Verna Dietrich, Arlington, Texas; Patricia Slawson, Sand Point, Idaho; and Barabara Jones, DeKalb, Texas; four brothers, Melburn Slawson, Rush Springs, Okla .; Johnnie Slawson, Shawnee, Okla .; Montie Slawson, Alavardo, Texas; and Donald Slawson, Springer, Okla .; two grandchildren and a great-


granddaughter. Nephews will serve as bear- ers.


John Thomas Shumate


Graveside services were held Monday, May 11, 1998 at 1 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., for John Thomas Shumate of Bodfish. Officiat- ing was Pastor Dave Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.


Mr. Shumate was born Aug. 14, 1926 in Bell, Calif., and passed away May 5, 1998 in Bakersfield. He has been a resident of the Kern River Val- ley for over 20 years. He served in the Navy during WWII and received a Purple Heart. He also worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for over 15 years. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking and refinishing furniture. He loved animals and working with troubled youths. He volunteered at Camp Owens for 11 years. He was a friend to everyone.


He is survived by his fiance, Mary Robertson, of Bodfish; and his daughters, Beth Luttrell of Redondo Beach; Cathy Bow- man of Redding, Calif .; and Pat (Tishy) Anderson of Rock- ford, Ill .; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all.
