We don't know much about his growing up, but we do know that he finished high school and was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II where he served our country as a staff sergeant, doing one of the toughest jobs there, serv- ing as a medic. He served from Feb. 16, 1942 until Nov. 6, 1945. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he worked for the U.S. Govern- ment at Sawtell Veterans Cen- ter on Wilshire in Los Angeles.

On May 5, 1947, he married Vivian Taylor in St. Louis and took her back to California where they lived while he con- . tinued working for the Veter- ans Administration until his retirement in 1973 when they then moved to the Kern River Valley.

Shortly after they arrived in the valley, Leonard saw the many needs for valley seniors. In 1976, he formed the AARP Chapter #2729.

Leonard was a real asset to our community. Some of the activities in which he was di- rectly involved include repre- senting the Kern River Valley in Sacramento and Bakers- field, before we had formal senior legislation, spending many hours as his own ex- pense as a volunteer, doing a lot of travel on behalf of the valley seniors.

He helped to start the 55- Alive driving courses to im- prove safety and to save money for insurance costs for seniors.

When Gene Tackett was our County Supervisor and Aileen Swan was his representative, Leonard helped in the plan- ning and building of the Senior Center.

He worked hard to get tele- phones in the canyon and to get the County Transit system going to provide local trans- portation for our seniors.

He was highly respected wherever he appeared on our behalf and he was recently honored with a plaque from AARP which now hangs in the Senior Center.

He was an active person who spent all of his time help- ing others. He did a lot of his work through the organizations that he was a part of. Some of those organizations include life member of the American Le- gion, charter member of AARP Chapter 2729, National Asso- ciation of Retired Federal Em- ployees, member of the Demo- cratic Club, and served on the Board of Directors of the Clinica Sierra in Wofford Heights.

He died on Dec. 4, 1997.
