Mr. Wenstrand is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris; a brother, Harold; a sister, Arlene Baumann; children: Arlo and wife Jan; Donald and wife Alison; Mary and husband Robert Moore; Gerald and wife Carol; and seven grandchildren: Linda Griesser, Scott Wenstrand, Grant Wenstrand, Colin Wenstrand, Leisa. Wenstrand, Matthew Wenstrand, and James Moore.


Although Mr. Wenstrand never resided in the Kern River Valley, he spent the last 20 years visiting here whenever possible. He made many friends and ac- quaintances.


In memory, a memorial schol- arship fund has been estab-


lished in his honor through the Kern Valley FFA Boosters.


Lena Mae Edwards


Private arrangements were made for Lena Mae Edwards who passed away on June 26, 1996, in Bakersfield, California. Lena was bom on October 11, 1948, in Los Angeles, Califor- nia. She spent most of her life in the Kem River Valley and at- tended high school here. A me- morial service will be held at a later date.


She is survived by her hus- band, Benny Edwards, of Lake Isabella; daughters, Gina, Chris- tina and Linda Edwards, of Lake Isabella; sisters, Jeannie Tate and Mary Cullen, both of Bakers- field; brothers, Gary Thomas of Bodfish, and Robert Cullen of Bakersfield; and her mother, Anna Inez Thomas of Bakers- field, Califomia.

Paul E. Stanley


Paul E. Stanley was bom on October 14, 1912, in Riverside, California, and passed away on June 23, 1996, at home in Wof- ford Heights after a bout with cancer. He was 83, a native of Riverside, Califomia, where he spent most of his life before retiring to the Kem River Valley - in October 1971.


He was a member of the Riv- erside Police Department for 31 years retiring in October 1971 as Assistant Chief of Police. He was president of the Riverside Peace Officers Association in 1969.


Paul was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. He was a mem- ber of the Retired Public Em- ployees Association, Lake Isa- bella Chapter, as well as the Retired Peace Officers Asso- ciation of California and the Public Employees Association of Riverside County.


He is survived by his wife, Iris, of 37 years; and nieces and nephews in Riverside and Clearlake, Califomia, also Min- nesota and Wisconsin.


At his request there will be no funeral. Any donations to the Cancer Association in his name would be appreciated.

Hattie Edna Howell


A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, 1996, at 11:30 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Hattie Edna Howell. Officiating will be Pastor Deryl Lackey of the Mt. View South- ern Baptist Church and the La- dies of the Moose.


Hattie was born December 28, 1905 in Estel Springs, Ten- nessee, and passed away on June 29, 1996, in Mt. Mesa, California. She was a resident of the Kern River Valley for the past five years and a member of the Moose Lodge.


She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Beverly Phillips of Lakewood, California; her brothers, John Rightmire of Florida and Lee Rightmire of Tennessee; her sister, Lois Trotter of Wofford Heights; granddaughters and their husbands, Hollie and Don Kidwell of Virginia; Heidi and Richard Moe of Virginia; and Heather and Bryan Halliday of Redondo Beach, California. Also surviving are her nieces, Johnel Trotter Hoffman and husband Clay of Wofford Heights; Lucretia and Mike Chmielewski and son John; Vickie Lester and sons AJ and Eddie from El Segundo, Califor- nia; Roselle and Adele Turner of Flonda; and other relatives in Oregon, Tennessee, Florida and California. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Betty Mae Petty


Betty Mae Petty was born to Arthur and Pearl Brocket in Moneta, California, on Novem- ber 17, 1925. She entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of June 28, 1996 at the Kern Val- ley Hospital, Mt. Mesa.


She received her elementary schooling in various cities in Southern California and gradu- ated from high school in El Monte.


Betty met Charles (Chuck) Petty while he was on leave from the Navy, in El Monte, where on October 1, 1944, they were married.


She loved to crochet and knit and enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles. Her rose garden was on of her greatest joys.


Betty is survived by her hus- band, Chuck, of Wofford Heights; three sons, Rodney Hamilton Petty of Moab, Utah; Timothy Allen Petty of Wilseyville, California; and Stephen Howland Petty of Orsie, California. Also surviving Betty are her two sisters, Kathrine Tupling of Bakersfield and Doris Barber of Hesperia, California; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.


Services were held on Wednesday, July 3, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Kernville with Pastor Dick Lewis and former Pastor John Revis officiating. Private burial followed.


Betty will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Julia E. Johnson


Julia Johnson was born No- vember 5, 1917, to Clyde and Nora Slocum in Topeka, Kan- sas. She entered eternal life on July 5, 1996, in Victorville, Cali- fornia, at the age of 78. A graveside service was held at the Kern River Valley Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 1996. Eulogy was given by her grandson, Bobby Walden.


She was retired from Kern County and was a resident of the valley area for 25 years. She moved to the valley from El Segundo. Julia was a member of the Ladies of the Moose. Her family could talk to her about anything and she understood and would encourage them.


Julia is survived by daugh- ters, Carol Sargent and Geraldine Reese; a brother Vernon Slocum of Gardena, California; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

Frances Clack


Private arrangements were made for Frances Clack who passed away on Saturday, July 6, 1996, at her home. She was born in Los Angeles, Califomia, in June 1929. She was an eighth generation Califomian and a resident of Kemville for the past year.


Frances is survived by her husband of 47 years, Richard Clack, of Kernville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Margie Clack, of Kernville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Hope Clack, of Los Angeles; and son, Christopher Clack, of Texas.


Her epitaph and eulogy was, "She loved and was loved. No one could ask for more."

Edna Marie Owens


Edna Marie Owens entered eternal rest at her residence in Bodfish on July 7, 1996, at the age of 75. She was born on September 13, 1920, to Lawrence and Julia Temple in Worchester, Massachusetts.


The family moved to Califor- nia when she was five years old and she received her schooling in the Los Angeles area, gradu- ating from Washington High School. Edna was employed by the Thrifty Drug Stores for 30 years. She was widowed and moved to the lake area in 1980 to be near her only son, Michael Scott Owens, of Bodfish.


Edna dedicated her life to being a first class mom. At her request, no services were held and interment was private.

Robert L. "Buffalo Bob" Maughmer


The life of Robert L. "Buffalo Bob“ Maughmerwas celebrated at a memorial service on Tues- day, July 16, 1996, at 6:00 p.m. 'on the patio area of the old Onyx store on Highway 178 in Onyx. Pastor John Carpenter of the Kernville United Methodist Church officiated along with many of Bob's friends. A pot- luck dinner followed.


A 10-year Kern River Valley resident, Bob was born Febru- ary 12, 1940 in Chillicothe, Ohio, and passed peacefully from this life, surrounded by his wife and friends on Thursday evening, July 11, 1996, at his home after a short but gallant fight with cancer. He was a 22-1/2 year veteran of the U.S. Navy.


After moving to the valley in 1986; Bob became involved in many community-activities. He- was an active member and served on the board of directors of the Wofford Heights Improve- ment Group and served as Mar- shal of Early California Days. He was active in supporting the Kid's Fishing Derby and was always willing to help any orga- nization with different types of fund raising or any type of activ- ity that would benefit the kids anywhere in the Kern River Valley.


Bob is survived by his wife, Sharon, of Onyx; his children, Robert Lee of South Carolina; Pamela and Penny Lee of North Carolina; his step-children, Rob- ert Bryson, Steven Bryson and Tina Bryson of Virginia; his sis- ter, Kathy Perez of Riverside; an aunt, Mary Johnson of Ari- zona; six grandchildren and a host of friends.


In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart House, in care of Bakers- field Memorial Hospital, 420 34th St., Bakersfield, CA 93301.

Elizabeth Eastenes


Elizabeth Eastenes, age 75, entered into eternal rest on July 4, 1996. She and her husband and their good friends, Wayne and Dorothy Weiler, were on a trip to Yerington, Nevada, where she was stricken by a stroke. She was flown to Bakersfield San Joaquin Hospital where she passed away.


She was born to Ralph and Martha Jackson on August 8, 1920, in Atlanta, Georgia. She received her education in At- lanta before moving to Los An- geles, California, where she met Joe Eastenes. The were going to visit Atlanta and were mar- ried on December 16, 1961 on their way.


After their honeymoon, they moved to Inglewood, Califor- nia, where she worked for Air Research Corporation (now Al- lied Signal) and she remained there until her retirement in 1968. She and her husband, Joe, came to the lake area in 1972.


Joe has known Wayne Weiler for 70 years and they were best friends; when both Joe and Wayne married, their wives be- came very close friends also. The two couples did most of their activities together, hence the trip to Yerington.


Elizabeth was a member of TOPS and held the position of weight recorder for the organi- zation.


She is survived by her loving husband, Joe. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.


No services were held and inurnment will be private.

Jacqueline Irene Grothe


Jacqueline Irene entered into eternal rest on July 2, 1996, at the Kem Valley Hospital. She was 71 years of age. Jacqueline was born to Hollis and Hazel Roland in Corning, lowa on November 16, 1925. She re- ceived her schooling in Com- ing.


She and Leonard (Lee) Grothe were married in Los Angeles, California, in 1947. Lee and Jacqueline moved originally to the lake area in 1971 where she worked as head cook for the Kern Valley Hospital. They moved back to the Los Angeles area in 1979 where she worked as receptionist for the Ventura Star Free Press. They returned to the valley a few years later and remained here.


Jacqueline was a talented artist and loved to paint. She was a member of the Art Guild. She was a person who was always concemed for others and throughout her long illness, never complained, according to long-time friend, Jack Dilley.


She is survived by her hus- band, Lee; son, John Douglas Grothe, of Henderson, Nevada; step-daughter Donna Lee Bartosch, of Phoenix, Arizona; brother John Roland of Camarillo, California; and one grandchild.


At her request, no services were held. Interment was pri- vate.

Virgil E. Kerr


Virgil E. Kerr, age 76, of Rogers, Arkansas, died Thurs- day, July 4, 1996, at Saint Mary's Memonal Hospital in Rogers. He was born February 20, 1920 in Cardwell, Missouri, the son of William Thomas Kerr and Mary Elizabeth Hagan Kerr.


He was a carpenter, and worked for Lucky Stores in Or- ange County, California. He moved to Rogers in November of 1991 from Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of the home; one son, Dennis Kerr, of Hendrix, Okla- homa; one daughter, Carol Ward, of Temecula, California; three stepdaughters, Judy Maedgen of Bruceville, Texas; Sharon Evans of Riverside, Texas; and Debbie Tobial of Lake Dallas, Texas; two broth- ers, Jay Kerr of Flint, Michigan; Billy Joe Kerr of Utah, and one beloved sister, Donna Barclay of Las Vegas, Nevada; two grandsons, Matthew Kerr and Gregory Trinkaus; and numer- ous step-grandchildren; a dear friend, Ray Sanders, of Moun- tain Mesa, Califomia. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel, of 33 years in 1984 and three brothers, Lyman,


Homer, and Buck Kerr.


Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 6, 1996 at the Callison-Lough Fu- neral Chapel in Rogers. Inter- ment was at the Benton County Memorial Park Cemetery. Cora Borgney Cooke


Cora B. Cooke was born March 28, 1911, in North Da- kota to Gust and Mary Fevog. She entered into eternal rest on July 18, 1996 at her residence in Lake Isabella.


She worked as a hairdresser prior to retiring. She moved to the Kern River Valley from San Gabriel in 1978. She was a member of Ladies of the Moose and enjoyed dancing until she became ill.


Cora's husband and daugh- ter preceded her in death and she is survived by her sister, Gladys Ross of Lake Isabella, and brother Clifford Fevog of San Marcos, California.

Patricia Jane Moon


A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 24, 1996, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Lake Isabella for Patricia Jane Moon who entered eternal life at her residence in Weldon on July 15, 1996.


Patricia was born on Novem- ber 18, 1925 in Milwaukee, Wis- consin, to Einar and Martha Haug. She received her school- ing in Milwaukee and received her credentials as Registered Nurse at the Milwaukee School of Nursing.


She married Richard Herbert Moon on August 7, 1948 in Mil- waukee and they moved to Southern California in 1959, settling.in West Covina for 25 years, where she worked as a Registered Nurse at the Queen of the Valley Hospital. They then moved to San Diego and came to the Kern River Valley seven years ago.


For the past 12 years, she and Herbert were missionaries in Kenya and other parts of East 'Africa. Patricia also taught in Japan and their last assignment . Les, Marjory is survived by their was in Mainland China.


Patricia was a talented artist, preferring to paint in oils, but her best and favorite hobby was that of mother to their seven children.


In addition to her husband Richard, Patricia is survived by her children James Richard Moon of Tiller, Oregon; Charles William Moon, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Kathleen Ann Styffe, San Dimas, Califor- nia; Thomas Robert Moon, Alta Loma, California; Barbara Stieglitz, Santee, California; Diane Lynn Long, Bennington, Vermont; Stephen John Moon, Livermore, California; and their families which includes 16 grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

Marjory Ethelyn Walton


Marjory Ethelyn Walton, 82, entered etemal rest on Thurs- day, July 18, 1996 at her home in Riverkern with her husband, Les, at her side.


Marjory was bom to Louis and Minnie Tyrrel on April 19,1914 in Los Angeles, Cali- fornia. She received her school- ing in the Los Angeles area and worked as a secretary for the Los Angeles City School Dis- trict where she met Les Walton. They were married in 1963, and became a blended family with her children and his children merging into one household. They immedately became a lov- ing, happy family.


Marjory and Les did a lot of traveling, which she loved. They enjoyed many cruises and vis- ited New Zealand, Austalia, and Alaska, to name a few. she also enjoyed boating on the Colo- rado River until her health pre- vented it. The center of her life was Les and their children. Fam- ily meant the world to her.


In addition to her husband children, Wayne Dow of Arizona; Joan Hatcher, San Gabriel, California; Jean Paine, River- side, California; Fred Dow, Newhall, California; Jerrie McCarthy, Sierra Madre, Cali- fornia; Nancy Caduto, Saugus, California; Leslie Walton, Or- egon and Joann Beyer, Seattle, Washington. Plus, sister Leone Henry of Riverkern and sister- in-law Edna Vozza of Palmdale, Califomia, and Elsa Schonberg, Ukiah, California. Eighteen grandchildren; two great-grand- children; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her greatly.

William Robert Edwards


Funeral services for William Robert Edwards, 67, of Bod-


fish, was held on Friday, July 19, 1996, at 10:00 a.m. at Shep- herd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella with Dr. Marvin Moon officiating. Interment foi- lowed in the Kem River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights. Bill was born August 13, 1928 in Adair, lowa where he resided for 27 years. He lived and worked the balance of his life in Bakersfield and Las Vegas, Nevada. He last worked as a terminal plant manager for Witco Corp. He had resided in Bodfish for the last two years.


Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patricia Louise Edwards; his two children, Larry and Becky Miller, Bill and Sandy Edwards, Bob and Kris Edwards; grandchildren, Robb and Hanah Miller, Sarah, Stacey, Shauna and Seth Edwards; as well as his broth- ers, John and Darwin Edwards and his sister, Sharon Edwards.


Visitation was on Wednes- day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Valley Mortuary in Lake Isabella.

Amanda Kaye Bivins


Graveside services were held Monday, July 29, 1996, at 10:00 a.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Amanda Kaye Bivins who passed away Wednesday, July 24, 1996, from complications due to an auto accident in June. Officiating was Pastor Deryl Lackey of Mt. View Southern Baptist Church.


Amanda was born Novem- ber 18, 1979, in Bakersfield, California, and has lived in Kem County all her life. She was a student at Kem Valley High School, and Captain of the Cheerleading Squad. She was in the FFA and ASB officer and Girl's State Delegate and she would have been the editor of the yearbook. Amanda also worked at the Kern Valley Golf Course and the Masonic Lodge.


She is survived by her par- ents Gary and Pam Bivins of Lake Isabella and her brothers Travis and Trevor Bivins, also of Lake Isabella; her grandpar- ents, Andy and Arla Gibson of


Lake Isabella and Jim and Gloria Bivins of Golden, Colo- rado; many aunts and uncles and other relatives and friends who will miss her greatly. She also leaves her dog ,Cupcake, and cow, Daisy.

Iris Evelyn Rooney


Iris Evelyn Rooney, 82, of Weldon, entered etemal life at 12:42 p.m. on July 23, 1996, at the Skilled Nursing Center of Kem Valley Hospital. Before her passing, however, herfam- ily had the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful dinner with her the previous evening.


She was born in Oak Creek, Arizona, on April 17, 1914, to LeRoy and Ellen Dickinson, where she received her school- ing. She moved to Jerome, An- zona and met and married Kennard Conway, who pre- ceded her in death in 1965. They moved to Califomia in 1941 and settled in Avalon Vil- lage in Wilmington.


Iris enjoyed a colorful life and had various careers. She first began work as a cosmetolo- gist, then during World War II worked as a welder in the ship- yards, became a butcher in a meat market, then was owner of a wholesale egg business. She has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for the past 20 years.


She loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress. She also was a fantastic cook, but her favorite and most success- ful hobby and her first priority was that of being the greatest mother, which she was.


Iris is survived by her son Ken and wife Linda of Redondo Beach, California; daughter


Adel Moon and husband Ken of Weldon; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also, sister Betty Dickenson of San Bernardino, California, and her brother Gene Dickenson of Oregon. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her.


Funeral services were held on Friday, July 26, 1996, at the Rose Chapel at Lake Isabella Funeral Home.

Emma June Monninger


Private family services were held for Emma June Monninger, 71, of Lake Isabella. Mrs. Monninger was born in El Monte, California, on May 14, 1925, to Hanna and Chris Laursen who came to America from Denmark by way of the Panama Canal. June passed away on July 18, 1996, at her home.


She was a 1943 graduate of El Monte High School. After World War II, she met James Edward Monninger and they were married in 1947. They settled in Glendora, California, to raise their daughter, Chris- tine. In 1976, Jim and June moved to the Kem River Valley to work as assistant managers of the Lazy River Lodge.


June was preceded in death by her husband Jim. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Arthur Hunter of Weldon; her broth- ers, Eddy Laursen and Richard Laursen and his wife, Mary; and numerous other family members.

Dorothy Mary Boesen


Dorothy Boesen entered eter- nal life on July 27, 1996, at the Kem Valley Hospital. Services were held Friday, August 2, 1996, at Rose Chapel, Lake Isa- bella Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor John Carpen- ter officiating. A luncheon fol- lowed interment at the United Methodist Church in Kemville.


She was bom on January 19, 1914, in Trenton, Missouri, to Jess and Maude Hughes, and received her schooling there. She moved to Long Beach, California, in 1940 and worked in the shipyards during the Sec- ond World War then worked for Englander Mattress Company as a seamstress before retiring. She married Carl Boesen in 1958 in Las Vegas and they moved to the Kern River Valley in 1970 where she immediately became active in the commu- nity.


Dorothy was a charter mem- ber of the Sweet Adelines; Past President of the YODs, Order of the Golden Slipper; a member of the Order of eastem Star; Past President of the Grand- mothers Club, and Past Presi- dent of United Methodist Women. She also was a mem- ber of the Wofford Heights Im- provement Group and in 1972 was co-chairman of the WHIGs annual Early Califomia Days. Dorothy was an excellent seam- stress and enjoyed oil painting and many crafts.


In addition to her husband Carl, Dorothy leaves son Bob Goodloe and wife Barbara of Phelan, Califomia; daughter Flo- rence Pettigrew and husband Howard of Luceme Valley, Cali- fomia. Her son Gerry Goodloe and daughter Carlene Payton preceded her in death. She also leaves brother Mark Hughes of Kernville and sister Emma Stuffman of Fallbrook, Califor- nia; 12 grandchildren, 10 great- grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild.


Dorothy's boundless energy and contributions to the Kern River Valley will be greatly missed. Arrangements were made by the Bonewell family of Lake Isabella Funeral Home, a Golden Rule Funeral Director.


Ivy Gladys Davis


Ivy Gladys Davis, age 92, entered etemal rest on Thurs- day, May 30, 1996, at her home in Kent, England. Ivy was bom the eldest of eight children on August 22, 1903 in London, England and came to the United States in 1958 to join two of her children. She lived and worked in the Northern Los Angeles County area for approximately 10 years. Ivy moved to Wofford Heights in 1968 and lived here for six years.


In 1974, Ivy retumed to En- gland to be close to her remain- ing brothers until she passed away. While living in Wofford Heights, Ivy was always help- ing others. She belonged to the Dorcas Society, associated with the Lutheran Church when it - was still in Kemville.


Her biggest accomplishment was in the fundraising for the building of the St. Peter's Epis- copal Church on Sierra Way in Kernville. Before leaving for England, Ivy was privileged to have nailed the building permit to a post where the church now stands.


While visiting Ivy in England, her last request was for her son, David Davis, to bring her home with him. It is done! A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 1996, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kemville. Father Bob Woods will officiate with interment fol- lowing in the Kem River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights.
