Robert E. Welsh, Sr.
Robert E. Welsh, Sr., age 70, died on Wednsday, September 16, 1998. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and spent most of his childhood and young adult years in Owensboro, Kentucky.
He graduated with a BA and MA in education from the Univer- sity of Kentucky and moved to San Diego, Calif., in 1956 with his wife, Jean Bolton Welsh and his two children, Jody and Bob.
. Both he and his wife taught in the San Diego School system until 1976 at which time they retired to Weldon, Calif.
Mr. Welsh was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa at the Univer- sity of Kentucky, and a long time member of the Lion's Club. He was a Life Master of Duplicate bridge and a member of the local Duplicate Bridge Club. He en- joyed a love of woodworking and instructing young people in fi- nancial planning.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Jean Bolton Welsh; his son and family, Robert E. Welsh, Jr., Jewell, Jessica and Jonathan Welsh of Mountain Home, Ark., - his daughter and family, Jody Welsh Steel, Jim and John Steel of Crescent City, Calif., and a great-grandchild, Lance Steel. Other survivors include his sis- ter-in-law, Margaret B. Vermil- lion of Weldon, a niece and nephew, Lee V. Edgerly and Edward F. Vermillion, Jr., of Lou- isville, Kentucky and two nieces in Tarpon Springs, Florida, Jo B. Cox and Beth B. Goodbread.

Graveside services were held Friday September 18, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Wendell Jackson Lane. Officiat- ing was Kenneth Fincher of Tuc- son, Ariz.
Mr. Lane was born February 17, 1932 in Grand Junction, Colo- rado and passed away Septem- ber 15, 1998 in Bakersfield, Ca- lif. He has been a resident of the Kern Valley for 24 years. he worked 52 years as a meat cut- ter in the city of Ridgecrest for Albertson's Food Store.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Evelyn of Onyx, daugh- ter Wendy R. Sanders of Ridge- crest, son Martin K. Lane of Chino, Calif., daughter and son- in-law Valoree and Jeff Morris of Diamond Bar, Calif., son and daughter-in-law Scott and Lemara Lane of Oak Harbor, Wash., 9 grandchildren and great-grandchild. He is survived by his sisters Audrey Frodsham, Monti Wiley, Elvira Menor, and Barbara Fincher.

Roy Lawrence Wheeler
Roy Lawrence Wheeler, 56, passed away at home on Sep- tember 17, 1998.
Roy Lawrence Wheeler was born in Bakersfield on March 15, 1942 to Florence Viola Wheeler. He married Sheila J. Wheeler 35 years ago and lived in the Lake Isabella area for the past 28 years working for Contel-GTE as a line- man/installer.
He belonged to Sparks No Fish Catching Association and he was the Honorary Big Chief of Popo Aggie.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila and children, Deneen Borklund, Damon Wheeler, Dirk Wheeler, daughter-in-laws, Christy Wheeler and Mishelle Wheeler, and son-in-law, Eric Borklund, sister Monica Carrasco, and eight grandchil- dren, Kristofer, Kodi, Kirstan, Kailee, Myranda, Devon, Justin and unborn baby Bryson.

Donald M. Springer
Donald M. Springer was born in Indianapolis, Ind., and passed away at age 61 peacefully in his sleep after a long battle with dia- betes in Kernville on Sept. 14, 1998. His brothers Dennis Springer of Kernville, and David Springer of Bodega, Calif. sur- vive him. Donald served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959 with an Honorable Discharge. He studied Aeronautical engi- neering.
Donald retired to the Kern Valley 20 years ago. He leaves behind many friends and loved ones who shared with him his love of classical music and fond- ness of the outdoors.
A private burial followed by an informal get-together at the Springer home was held on Sun- day, Sept. 19, 1998. In lieu of flowers, a donation to local chari- ties is appreciated.

Monica Stella Werner
Monica Stella Werner, a long time resident of the valley, passed away at the home of her son, Thomas Kay in Reno, Nev. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998.
She was born in Berlin, Ger- many on April 4, 1926 and immi- · grated to the United States with her mother in 1941. She met Johann Kay Werner in Holly- wood, married shortly thereaf- ter, and abandoned her post as French Horn Player in the Greater Los Angeles Symphony Orches- tra to raise her two children, Tho- mas and Vikki.
She and aero-space engineer husband Kay came to the valley in 1967 and operated a success- ful television repair service to- gether until Kay's retirement circa mid 1980's.
She was a gifted writer, bird fancier, and was loved and re- spected by her family and friends and international pen-pals. She is survived by son Thomas Kay of Reno, Nev., daughter Vikki Jane of Sacramento, four grand- children and two great-grand- daughters, both born recently.
She will be greatly missed by all-and her family wishes her peace and love in her new tran- sition where she will certainly be embraced by many friends.
William Atchison "Bill" Karr
Masonic services were held Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights for William A. "Uncle Bill" Karr, who passed away from cancer after a brief illness on Sept. 21, 1998.
A longtime Kernville resident who retired to the Kern River Valley from Ventura, Calif., with his wife Velda A. Karr, after 29 years with General Telephone (GTE). Mr. Karr was born on June 15, 1921, in Los Angeles. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945, where he saw action in the Marshall Islands, Tinnea, and Saipan. He was a member of the Masonic Temple and the Kern River Val- ley Elks Lodge for many years. Bill's favorite pastimes were fish- ing the Klamath River, gambling at Lake Topaz, and spending time with his loyal dog, Candy.
Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Velda D. Karr; his sons, Gentry D. Karr of Los Angeles, and Michael D. Hays of Ventura; his daughter, Lynda L. Tyler of ·Big Lake, Alaska; brother Ed- ward L. Karr of Colton, Calif., four grandchildren, three great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Bill is also sur- vived by his 93-year-old uncle,

Mrs. Wall was born Septem- ber 12, 1910 in Hartford, Conn. and passed away Sept. 26, 1998 in Bakersfield, Calif. She has been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 15 years. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was greatly loved and will be missed.

Lawrence (Larry) David Vogt
Lawrence David Vogt passed away Friday Sept. 25, 1998 in Onyx, Calif.
Larry was born June 2, 1923 in Hinsdale, Ill. He served his country in WWII receiving med- als in the Asiatic Pacific, and also in Europe and African Middle East.
He moved to California after his Honorable Disability Dis- charge in 1945. He had his own business and lived in Malibu, Calif. He later helped his parents build their home in Onyx and resided there working with the Army Corps of Engineers and the Lake Patrol in the 1960's. He was a charter member of the Kern River Valley Elks Lodge #2358, a life member of the Dis- abled American Veterans Chap- ter CA23 and also a member of the American Legion Pacific Pali- sades Post 283.
As you travel through the beautiful Kern River Valley and in camp grounds around the lake, you will find many Eucalyptus species of trees planted through the years by Larry, standing like tall monuments in his honor. He loved trees, plants and music.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel of Onyx. He is also sur- vived as a loving adopted father by his daughter Connie Penn of Redding, Calif., granddaughter, Anjel Schneider and two great granddaughters, April and Kari Schneider, also of Redding, Ca- lif.

Mr. Hammond was born Au- gust 8, 1913 in Shawnee, Ohio and passed away on October 1, 1998 at his home in Bodfish. Mr. Hammond and his family lived in Hawthorne, Calif. for 26 years and he worked at McDonnell Douglas for 35 years before re- tiring and moving to Bodfish 21 years ago. He was a member of the Machinist's Union and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed fish- ing, camping and traveling. He devoted his life to his wife and his sons. He is survived by his wife, Helen and his sons, James Hammond of Lake Isabella, Ri- chard and Carol Hammond of Carson, Calif., Robert and Vir- ginia Hammond of Henderson, Nev., David and Roseline Hammond of Bakersfield and sis- ter Cecilia Smith of Bodfish, niece Carol Danter of Bodfish, 6 grand- children and 4 great-grandchil- dren.

Bessie C. Whitten
Bessie C. Whitten, 86, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998. She departed this life at the Kern Valley Hospital Skilled Nurs- ing Facility in Lake Isabella after suffering a major stroke almost 3 months ago.
Mrs. Whitten was born in Sitka, Ark. on August 10, 1912. She came to California in 1944, moved to Kern County in 1947, and lived in Lake Isabella since 1981. She was a faithful member of Mountain View Southem Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.
She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, E. Harvey Whitten; two daughters, Sarah and her husband William Robert Hobbs of Merced, Calif., and Sherry Gynendal Whitten of Corona, Ca- lif;, two grandchildren, Nancy Johnson and her husband Aaron of Le Grand, Calif .; David Hobbs and his wife Kristine of Fresno, Calif., two great-granddaughters, Kelly Erin Hobbs and Katelyn Joy Hobbs of Fresno; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles "Animal". Michael Stern
Charles was born on Septem- ber 14, 1978. He was raised by his father since he was 7 years old. Although it wasn't easy growing up in a single parent household, but at the age of 20 he was turning into a fine young man. Dad was proud.
Charles "Animal" is survived by his father Charles L. Stern and step- mother Jean Stern; also his brother Ronald Stem; all of Wofford Heights.
Ronald, age 16, was in the car with his brother at the time of the accident but will be okay. Also sur- viving him is his sister Carolyn Barnhill of Bakersfield, his mother Linda Duggan of Portland, Ore, his grandmother Arvilla Stern of Lake Isabella and grandfather William Stern of Pinion Hills, Calif .; his aunt, Marilyn Copeland and husband Dave of Squirrel Valley and their daughter Trisha; 2 nieces, 5 uncles and numerous other cousins.
We will all miss him.

Margaret "Maggie" Compeau
Margaret Compeau passed away October 9, 1998 at her home in Weldon. She is survived by her husband Dan, three daughters: Karon of Portland, Sharon of Seattle, and Theresa of L.A .; and a son, Steve, of Wash. two sisters, Claire of San Francisco and Annette of Austin, Tex .; and a brother Harvey of Wash. Also, two grandchildren, Patty and Charlene of L.A. and five great-grandchildren.
Maggie was a woman with a great capacity for love of her fellow beings, and will be sorely missed. The world is a lesser place because of her passing, but God must have needed an- other angel.

LeRoy Daniel Kreighbaum
LeRoy Daniel Kreighbaum ·was born on May 15, 1942, in Los Angeles, Calif. He passed away October 10, 1998 in Bakersfield, Calif. Mr. Kreighbaum was a resident of China Lake (1943-1960), when he joined the Air Force. He was discharged in 1964. He was an employee at the China Lake Naval Weapons Center from 1965 until his retirement in May of 1997. Mr. Kreighbaum truly loved his job at the Naval Weap- ons Center. He also was pas- sionate about his rose garden at home, but he never quite consid- ered himself a gardener. He al- ways said that God was his "gar- dener," simply because he never did much to encourage its growth. The garden just sort of managed itself with God's help, as evi- denced by the huge, beautiful roses that grew there. LeRoy Daniel Kreighbaum was a de- voted son, brother, uncle, and cousin. Funeral services were held Saturday, October 17, 1998 at the Kern River Valley Cem- etery at 1 p.m. in Wofford Heights, Calif.

David was born January 21, 1955 in Los Angeles, Calif. and passed away October 20, 1998 in Wofford Heights, Calif. Helived in the Kern River Valley off and on for the past 5 years, sharing his time between his parents in Wofford Heights and his parents in Daton, Nev. Everyone always called on him to come to their rescue with their mechanical problems. He was well known and loved by everyone on the mountain.

Steven Earl Smith
Steven Earl Smith, son of long- time Riverkern resident- Verna Clement passed away October. 11, 1998 at the age of 61 at his home in Sherman Oaks, after a lengthy illness.
Steven served as Southern California manager in the presi- dential campaigns of Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and Robert F. Kennedy in 1968. He was a na- tive of Torrance and a graduate of Cal State L.A. and Whittier College School of Law.
Beginning his political career as Southern California chairman of the California Federation of Young Democrats in 1958, Smith was named the first administra- tive officer of the state Assembly in 1961 by its then-speaker, Jesse M. Unruh.
Steven ran unsuccessfully for the Los Angeles City Council in 1970.
Serving as executive director of the California Commission for Economic Development from 1973 to 1978, he took time out in 1974 to manage Mervyn Dymally's successful campaign for lieutenant governor.
Steven passed the California bar in 1977 and practiced law in Los Angeles for 20 years, serv- ing for more than a decade as a federal bankruptcy trustee.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Helena Robinson Smith; two daughters, Catherine
and Jennifer; and two sons, Steven Jr. and James; mother, Verna Clement & stepfather Eu- gene Clement of Riverkern; Brother, Sydney David Smith of Wofford Heights, and Brian Dou- glas Clement and family of Norwalk, Calif. Steven's father, Lyman Smith preceded him in death in 1955.
Steven and his family enjoyed the Kern River Valley very much; many family get-togethers were spent here with his mom & step- dad. Steven was known by many valley residents and he will truly be missed.
Daniel Alfred Williams
Daniel Alfred Williams was born December 23, 1915 to Os- car Williams and Alice Ruynan Williams in Wichita, Kan. He was raised on the Williams farm west of Caldwell. He attended the Bailey School through grade school and attended one year of high school in Caldwell.
On July 16, 1941 he was united in marriage to Altha B. Davis at Winfield, Kan. They went to Bell, Calif., August 2, 1942 and he was employed at Cal Ship Yard as a welder's helper until he had to report to the draft board in Wellington, Kan. He served in the U.S. Navy and took his boot training in Farragut, Idaho. His wife was able to join him until he was transferred to Treasure Is-
land, then San Bruno and then shipped to Okinawa PT Boat #24. During this time their daughter Judy Ann was born in Septem- ber 29, 1943 and their son Rob- ert Eugene was born October 12, 1945. He received his dis- charge November 24, 1945 at Norman, Okla.
They purchased a home in Caldwell and he was employed at the Firestone Station, then Walt Norton Chevrolet as a me- chanic. Then he worked for Neal Hess Plumbing Texas Houses. In 1947 they purchased the Fred Burcher Farm, and they lived there until 1958 when they moved to Farmington, N. M. and he worked for Vernie Schwertfiger. In 1962 they moved to Trona, Calif. where he worked in a li- quor and deli until his retirement in 1978. They retired at Lake Isabella, Calif. and he passed away after a short illness of can- cer and pneumonia, October 22, 1998.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife of the home; his daugh- ter Judy of Boise, Idaho; his son Robert at Orofino, Idaho; his sis- ter Helen (Vicki) Masci of Reseda, Calif .; eight grandchil- dren and eight great-grandchil- dren, a host of nieces and neph- ews and other relatives and friends.
