Oma Bernice Mikula

Oma Bernice Mikula was born on Jan. 6, 1916, to her parents Joseph and Reka Kline, in Lowder County, Ill. Raised in the Midwest, Oma was brought up with a strong sense of family values. She began working while still a teenager doing housekeeping for private families. It was at this time that Oma met the love of her life, George Mikula. The two were inseparable and were later married on Nov. 9, 1935.

In 1946, Oma and George moved to Lakewood, Colo., and continued to build a life together. Oma began working for the Gates Rubber Co. in Denver and continued on there for about 10 years. During this time, she and George traveled around the United States, and in their travels, they found several towns they later moved to. In 1955, Oma and George moved to Santa

Monica, and then later moved to Lancaster, while all the while working for the Lockheed and Hughes Aircraft companies. In 1958. the two of them purchased property in Onyx and came to the Valley as

"weekenders." However, in 1972, Oma and George picked up their roots and replanted them here in our valley, making their weekend home their perma- nent home.

Oma was very active in the Valley, becoming a member of the local Moose lodge, the CBers club, and the Eagles. She and George stayed active in our community, and continued to travel, visiting Alaska on fishing and hunting trips. At the end of their travels, they had visited all 50 states.

Oma and George made friends all across America, which is one of the reasons that made it so hard when Oma fell ill a while back and was hospitalized. Oma was fortunate enough to be able to celebrate her 65th wedding anniversary with George in November. But as these things do, in the twilight of the evening on Dec. 2, 2000, Oma Bernice Mikula passed away and went home to be with the Lord.
