Myrtle Marie Teasdale Houston

Myrtle Marie Teasdale Houston, known by most as "Grandma," bom May 26, 1905, in Hocking, lowa, went to heaven on August 28, 1996. There will be a celebration of her life, followed by dinner, on Septem- ber 13, 1996, at 2:00 p.m., at the home of her daughter, Phyllis M. Hix, with whom she resided for the past several years, at 316 Rio del Loma, Kernville. Pastor John Car- penter of the Kemville United Meth- odist Church will officiate at the Celebration of Life and Kern River Valley Chapter No. 643, Order of the Eastern Star, Sue Mckinney, Grand Conductress of the Grand Chapter of Califomia, Past Matron, Kem River Valley presiding. All Grandma's friends and family are invited to share this day. There will be a wake in her honor from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on September 12, 1996, at the house.

Myrtle Teasdale was bom in a coal mining company town to Alice and Thompson Teasdale, the old- est of five children. As the oldest, it was her task to help her mother care for the others and clothe and feed her father and brothers -for. their work in the coal mines. She loved school, and to read. She graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1923 from the Novinger, Missouri High School. She attended one year of college at Northeast Missour Teacher's College, then met the man she was married to for over 50 years, Hyle Leon Houston, who died in 1977.

Although deaf since age 20, most people were unaware of that, due to her great determination to partici- pate cheerfully and fully in all of life's activities. A Christian, her deep faith saw her through many challenges. In a time when "deaf" usually meant "dumb" to most, she became a suc- cessful business woman owning and operating many farms and other

husband in lowa and Missouri. To- gether, as a team, they began the "Stop and Shop - Open 24 Hours" produce markets and the first su- permarket chain in the mid-west, the IAMO Stores. In her "retirement" years, and until age 84, she was a full time bookkeeper for her daughter's law firm in San Marino, Califomia. She loved going to work each day, and, at that stage of her life, being "one of the girls" at the firm!

They had two children, Patricia Lou, who died as an infant, and Phyllis M. Hix, of Kemville, Califor- nia.

The Houston team supported many families and friends over the years, from the Depression on, with its Christian love and support, clothes, jobs to those considered unhireable in that period, resources, food. Grandma was always the one to quietly arrive, assess the needs, and fulfill them, then just as quietly go home. She was a leader, yet chose not to be an officer in her groups because of her deafness. In all groups she was the Hostess, the reader of poems, the Inspirational Chairperson, head of the kitchen detail. She worked, always the proper lady, with a smile, purpose- fully in her gentle, silent world. She never complained, always praised and held to her faith. She never swore, never spoke judgmentally or

with nastiness of anyone, and from her youth followed her family and Methodist traditions of working to fiercely protect the rights of the less fortunate, then later, her Eastem Star traditions of extended family love.

She was gentle, kind, calm. She accepted everyone for who and what they were. Grandma never met a stranger. She loved a party - espe- cially her own birthday parties in recent years as she admitted, as the oldest child in a modest family, she had never had a birthday party given for her as a child.

Myrtle loved and supported her entire family unconditionally and doted on her grandchildren, Stacy Marie Hix of Kemville, Califomia, and Jeffrey David Hix of Atlanta, Georgia. She is survived by them; her daughter Phyllis M. Hix of Kem- ville, Califómia; a brother, Tucker Teasdale of Grundy Center, lowa; and dozens of other relatives and friends, all of whom will recall her with warmth and a smile.

Interment will be on September 28, 1996, at Fairview Cemetery in Madrid, lowa.
