Jeanne Brunner Kielman

Jeanne Brunner Kielman left us peacefully late Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2000, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Her release saddens us, but blesses her in a unity with the divine that was her life-long journey.

-

Born in Pittsburgh on Aug. 5, 1918, Jeanne was the tom- boy in a family of three other sisters and a younger brother. Her curiosity and outgoing nature often went against the grain of her childhood times, leaving her with appreciation and compassion for all chil- dren as an adult. She was the Girl Scout leader for both of her daughters' troops, consci- entiously helping her charges earn numerous brightly colored badges for their sashes. She carefully and lovingly taught her daughters those domestic skills she valued: cooking, sew- ing, keeping a home (and checkbook), and 101 uses for the zucchini.

Jeanne's heart and front door were always open to her children and grandchildren, and to the neighborhood gang she welcomed into her home and her cookie jar. She took great interest and joy in her two children and four grand-

children, valuing and respect- ing them- and the menag- heim High School in 1930. She erie of friends who accompa- nied them (the '60s were par- ticularly noteworthy ... )

The Catholic faith sustained Jeanne all her life. She was actively involved in the Ridgecrest Altar Society, over- seeing the care of exquisitely embroidered vestments and beautifully crafted articles that were an integral part of the centuries-old Catholic tradi- tions. Jeanne found joy and contentment in this area of service, and in the friendships she had with the women who shared these duties. She trav- eled to both the Holy Land and Italy to experience first hand the beauty and complexities of her religion.

Jeanne was an organizer. Her things had a place (and often a Scotch-taped label). Her life was ordered. She left us with no loose ends, no frayed strands to tie together., Her passing fills us with relief that her long trial has ended, but with bruised hearts that cellophane tape cannot mend.

She is survived by her hus- band, Leo Kielman; her daugh- ters, Sukey Kielman and Jann Veach; her son-in-law Kelly Veach; her grandchildren, Gram Gallagher, Jay, Joel, and Julene Veach; her three sis- ters, Dorothy Stein, Mary Lou Fuchs, and Connie Foley; and her brother, Art Brunner.

A memorial service will be held at a future, unspecified, date. Her family requests do- nations to be made to: Alzheimer's Association of the Greater San Francisco Area, 330 Distel Circle, Suite A, Los Altos, Calif. 94022.
