Conrad Robles


Visitation was held on Feb. 20, 2002, followed by Ro- sary, at Valley Mortuary in Lake Isabella, for Conrad Robles. Memorial services were at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Wofford Heights on Feb. 21. Interment was at the Kern River Valley Cem- etery in Wofford Heights.


Conrad was born Aug. 1, 1920 in Floresville, Texas, and passed on Feb. 16, 2002 at Bakersfield Heart Hospi- tal at the age of 81.


Conrad is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anita; daughter Frances Harbour and husband Bruce of Whittier; son Joe Robert Robles and wife Debbie of Moorpark, Calif .; four grand- sons, one granddaughter, six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Other surviving family members include brother Sixto Rob- les; sisters Mary Ann Torres and Sophia Santibanez; two special nieces, Eva Borrego and Mary Escalera and hus- band Frank of San Antonio; and nephew Julio Robles of Auburn, Calif.


Conrad was a veteran of the Army Air Corps and served in Burma in WWII. He retired from Rockwell Inc. on Aug. 1, 1982, and moved to Kemville. He was a mem- ber of the Lake Isabella VFW Post 7665, the Lake Isabella Moose Lodge No. 498, the Knights of Columbus Coun- cil No. 7927, the Kern Valley Wagoneers, and a lifetime member of the Elks.


Conrad, we love you and miss you, and you'll always be in our hearts forever.


Services were arranged by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.


Tessia Louisa "Tess"Windham


Tess Windham was bom on April 17, 1915 in Colum- bus, Mont. to Justin and Lelah Fowler. She entered into rest on Feb. 16, 2002 at Kem Val- ley Hospital in Mountain Mesa at the age of 86, with her son Richard and her granddaugh- ter Diane at her side. Tess was a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand- mother and great-great- grandmother.


Tess was known as the lady who ran the half-way house for animals. She had a great love for any of God's. creatures. She also loved the mountains she could see from her home in Bodfish: She enjoyed the different seasons and weather changes in this area.


Tess was the voice you heard for 20 years when you called her son Richard's plumbing business. She was a switchboard opera- tor for Ingleside Hospital in the San Gabriel Valley area for more than 15 years be- fore she moved to the Bodfish area.


Surviving her are son Ri- chard and wife Clare of Lake Isabella; son Ted and wife Yolanda of Santa Margarita, Calif .; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.A. Windham and two daughters, Nancy Lee Windham and Rose Marie Clouse.


Tess will be sadly missed by her family, neighbors and friends. Private family ser- vices will be held at a later date.


Services were entrusted to the care of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, fam- ily owned and operated.

Mary Rachel Klatt


Mary Klatt was born in Osage City, Kan. to Fred and Hallie Tyson on Dec. 7, 1910. She passed away on Feb. 20, 2002 at Kern Valley Hospital in Mountain Mesa.


Mary came to California in 1940 and lived in Los Angeles until 1984 when she retired after working 20 years for a sewing factory. She moved to the lake area after her retirement.


Mary loved living here since she was a great out- door person. She loved to hunt and fish and was an excellent archer and a good fisherman. She was a mem- ber of the Rod and Gun Club. Mary was also a mem- ber of the Eagles here in the Valley.


Mary was preceded in death by her daughter Ruta Mae Tucker and her grand- son Robert Tucker. Surviv- ing her are her son, William Klatt; one sister, Violet Maryott of Pennsylvania ;- great-granddaughter Sandra and husband Ja- son Martin of Sacramento; great-granddaughter Mary Ann Tucker of Reno, Nev .; great-grandson Jonathan Gordon of Mountain Mesa; and Robert's wife, Sharon of Mountain Mesa.


Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Private services were entrusted to the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, family owned and operated.


Louis John Kocsis


Louis was bom to Peter and Rose Koscis on March 24, 1925 in Ogemaw, Mich. He entered into rest on Feb. 26, 2002 at Kem Valley Hos- pital in Mountain Mesa.


Louis was an outdoors man who loved the mountains. He wanted to live in this area or in Utah. He decided that the lake area better suited his needs. His two loves were to fish and to hunt. He also enjoyed be- ing with his friends at the Lode Bar in Wofford Heights.


Louis served in the Army during World War II, and then worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank.


Louis is survived by his son Rick of Wofford Heights; two daughters, Cathy Schmidt of Fort Wayne, Penn. and Connie Denning of Upland, Calif .; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


A void is left at his pass- ing. He was loved by family and friends. Private services were entrusted to the care of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, family owned and operated.

Leonard A. Hanning


Lifetime Kem River Valley resident Leonard Hanning passed away on Feb. 26, 2002, at 12:55 a.m. at the U.C. Medical Center in San Francisco.


He was born in Bakers- field, Calif. to Don and Josephine Weldon Hanning of Old Isabella on March 17, 1927. During World War II Leonard served in the U.S. Marine Corp as a guard on board a Navy ship. During this time he saw much of the Pacific front including China and the South Seas. Upon his discharge, he returned to Weldon where he and his brother, Walt Hanning, owned and operated the Hanning Bros. Ranch. He married Betty Ann Kegan of Mina, Nev. (now deceased) with whom he had eight chil- dren. In 1967 he married Marie Zabel. Living on the ranch, they raised their seven children. In 1976 they sold off most of the ranch and purchased Whispering Pines Lodge in Kernville, which they ran for 13 years. During this time Leonard


also worked for CalTrans. Retiring in 1989, they re- turned to the portion of the ranch that they had retained to open Hanning's Pumpkin Patch, which Leonard and Marie ran until 2000 when they moved to daughter and son-in-law Christi and Todd Fisher's Creston, Calif. ranch, where Leonard was residing at the time of his death.


Surviving him are his wife of 35 years, Marie Zabel Hanning; two sons; a daugh- ter; two stepdaughters, 13 grandchildren; one great- granddaughter; his brother and sister; and nine nieces and nephews. One infant son, John, infant twin daugh- ters, Jerry Ann and Polly Jo, and son Casey preceded him in death. Surviving chil- dren include: : Carson Hanning of Creston, his sons Nick and Andy of Julesburg, Colo., Patrick of Bakersfield, daughters and sons-in-law Kelly Hanning and her daughter Rusty Stone of Lake Isabella; Marty and Sh- annon Hanning Owens and their sons Carson and Jim of Reno, Nev .; Todd and Christi Zabel Fisher and children Vanessa Rivers and (twins) James and Brandon Rivers of Creston; Kenny and Becca Zabel Crosland of Bozeman, Mont. and their sons and daughter-in-law Neal and Ami Preston and their daughter Bradlie of Mt. Mesa; Cody Preston of Mt. Mesa; and Lane and Logan Crosland of Bozeman, grandson Ryan Hanning (son of Casey) of Los Ange- les; Leonard's brother and sister-in-law Walter and Beverly Hanning and son


Ceil of Weldon and son Clay of San Jose, Calif .; and Leonard's sister Dorothy Felix and her children Leonard Wayne, Leslie, Laurie, Kim, Shelly, Tina and Paula, all of Dallas, Texas.


Leonard was a member of the Moose Lodge of Lake Isabella, the V.F.W. and the National Rifle Assoc. He had a life-long love of hunting, fishing and camping. His love of the land showed in his agricultural ventures, capped off by the tomato harvest of 2001.


His ashes will be retained by his wife Marie and will be mixed with her own and spread together.


Leonard was a wonderful husband and father and will be forever missed and re- membered by all who knew him.


A memorial service will be held at the Four Square Church in Wofford Heights at 11:00a.m. on March 9, 2002, with a reception following at the Moose Lodge in Lake Isabella.


In lieu of flowers, any gifts will be donated by the family to The Family Link hospice house and UCSF Medical Center.

James Thomas Burdge


We mourn the loss of Jim Burdge, affectionately known as "JB" to many of his family and friends, who died peace- fully on Feb. 27, 2002. He left this world for the next knowing he was loved by all who knew him. Graveside services were held on March 5, 2002 at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights with Pastor Dante Tangonan of the Kernville United Methodist Church of- ficiating.


Jim was born on Feb. 10, 1921 in Helena, Mont. As a young boy his family moved to Tujunga, Calif. where he met the love of his life, Lauretta. They married on May 17, 1942. He served in the Sea Bees 5th Special Battalion in the U.S. Navy. He and Lauretta moved to the San Fernando Valley and raised their three children. During the next 25 years Jim had three careers. He was a plasterer and foreman of a construction crew, manager of Hollyview Manufacturing, then general manager of


Doran Plastics. He and Lauretta took a weekend trip and, with their usual spontaneity, bought a mo- bile home in Bodfish in the Kern River Valley that they used for vacations. It wasn't long before Jim changed careers once again. They purchased the Kernville Texaco and bought a home in town.


Jim was always active in the community. He served a term as president of the . Kernville Chamber of Com- merce, and while in office he initiated the building of the rodeo grounds. Whis- key Flat Days was always one of Jim's favorite events.


Jim loved life and lived it to the fullest. He filled his life with his family, his friends and his other pas- sion, antique cars. You could always find him in his garage, working on his lat- est project.


Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Lauretta; their daughter, Lynette and her husband Dan O'Neill of Seattle, Wash .; their two sons, Ri- chard and his wife Chris of Kernville and Jim and his wife Nancy of Bakersfield; along with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchil- dren. It broke our hearts to lose him but he didn't go alone, for part of us went with him the day God called him home.


Services were arranged by Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.

Alexander Vega Figueroa


Alexander Vega Father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, you are our favorite person in all the world. You will be sorely missed by family and friends, but we know that you will continue to look in on us from heaven. Figueroa passed away March 2, 2002 at his Lake Isabella home. Alex was born on June 4, 1917 in Holtville, Calif. He is sur- vived by his two daughters, Char Johnstone of Lake Isabella and Gloria Cleary of Simi Valley; nine grand- children- Ronald Johnstone Jr. of Kernville, Frances Brown Rena Hudson of Tehachapi, After fighting a long battle with cancer, Frances Brown died Feb. 21, 2002 at the age of 75. Tracy Shofner and Kevin Johnstone of Lake Isabella, Rueben Cabrera of Carlsbad, Calif., Paul She is survived by five Cabrera of Simi Valley, children- Emil Vasco, Marjorie Manning, Nancy


Ryan Cleary of North Holly- wood, Colleen Cleary of Siebert, Donna Castle and


Mera Mesa, and Meagan Cleary of Simi Valley; 11 great-grandchildren- Alexander, Mandy, Joshua, Jeremy, Jacob, Kyle, Cody, Aaron, Alie, Alexandra and Jack; and two great-grand- children, Sierra and Jacob.


Alexander served faith- fully as the minister of hos- pitality at St. Jude's Catho- lic Church. Alex had many friends and family who loved him and he always had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. He was a kind gentle man, who had a heart as big as his smile.


Patricia Vasco. She also leaves eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.


She never gave up, and was always concerned about everyone else. She will be dearly missed by those of us who love her. Our lives are truly better for her being in them.


So for any of you who are grieving, smile and be happy for that is what Fran would want!

Virginia Marie Rose


Virginia Marie Rose was bom to Hazel and Clemens Sutter on Aug. 15, 1921 in Dayton, Ohio and passed away at Kem Valley Hospital on Feb. 28, 2002.


She loved to read and cro- chet and a big part of her life was devoted to her church. Virginia never stopped learn- ing. She learned to swim at 53, to ride a horse at 63 and went back to college at 73. She had her ears pierced at 80.


Virginia loved the lake area and her many friends and was known for her great sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Warren Charles Rose. She is survived by one son, Donald Rose Jr. of Reseda; three daughters -- Linda Stroup of Dyersburg, Tenn., LaVonne Hurley of Vista, Calif. and Melodie Craig of Lake Isabella; grand- son Matthew Craig of Lake Isabella; granddaugher Robin Ladig; great-grand- daughter Samantha Martindale; and many, many friends.


A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private inurnment was held. The services were entrusted to the care of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, a family- owned funeral home.

Peter Blair Dixon


Peter Blair Dixon, or Pete, as his friends knew him, en- tered this world on Aug. 19, 1950, and the Lord took him home on Feb. 22, 2002.


Known by many and loved by all who knew him, Pete will be dearly missed. Pete was truly an inspiration of happiness to us all. He knew how to take the worst, and make the best of it. There was rarely a time when he wasn't smiling. Those who knew him describe him as "all heart." This is how we will always remember him. Though he didn't have much, he was always the first to offer whatever he did have. We were blessed by his pres- ence for 51 years, though it seems like such a short time. He always offered a shoul- der to cry on, or even just a friendly word of advice, but that helped many. Pete was truly a gift. He will always be cherished in our hearts and minds forever.


Pete is survived by his son, Nathaniel Blair Dixon, daughter Randi Anne Dixon, and many friends who loved him dearly.


William Alan Rose


Bill, as he was known, was bom on April 23, 1949 in Pasadena, to Bill and Ruth Rose. He passed into eter- nal rest on March 8, 2002 at Kern Valley Hospital. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Ruth; a sister, Vera; a brother, Guy; and his com- panion, Melody.


Bill lived in Kern County for 25 years and was em- ployed by the county as a maintenance technician for the Parks and Recreation Department.


He served his country during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Army.


A memorial service is be- ing planned for a later date in Pasadena. Bill will be greatly missed by family and friends. Private services were entrusted to the care of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, family owned and operated.

Florence Edna Silveira


Florence Edna Silveira passed away on March 13, 2002. She was born May 22, 1910 in Los Angeles, the daughter of Emma Shaner.


Florence and her hus- band, Johnnie, met in El Monte, Calif. She was sell- ing tickets at a local movie house and he bought tickets from her. When it was time for her to quit, she would join him inside. They married in 1930 .. They settled in West Los Angeles where Johnnie was head production man- ager of the ice cream depart- ment at Adohr Milk Farms on La Cienega Blvd. Because of the many creations and gold medals at the Pomona Fair, Johnnie and Florence were invited to become a part of the famous Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax in L.A. Their ice cream became quite popular. Johnnie made over 30 flavors and Florence managed their store and made ice cream cakes and molds for every occasion. She was well known for her ' beautiful fruit bowls. Each fruit was made from its flavor of ice cream.


They ran their ice cream business for 16 years, then retired to Pismo Beach, Ca- lif. Johnnie passed away on Father's Day 1976 and Flo- rence continued to stay until 1987, when she moved to Lake Isabella to be close to her daughter and son-in-law. Barbara and Bill were able to buy the property next to theirs and set up a mobile home on it for Florence.


She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Bill Heizer of Lake Isabella; her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Joanne Silveira of Oroville, Calif .; grand- daughter and husband Lori and Kevin Riley of Chico, Calif .; and great-grand- daughter Sarah Kurofsky of Moorpark, Calif. She was an amazing lady, mom, mother-in-law, grandma, "Sweetie" and a friend who was loved by all.


Mom, we love you and you will always be in our hearts. Graveside services were held March 19, 2002 at the.Arroyo Grande Cemetery in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

George Mitchell Croft


George Mitchell Croft was born on Oct. 2, 1912 in Hopkinsville, Ky., to Luther Benson Croft and Katie Pansy Mitchell. He died on March 10, 2002 following surgery.


George moved with his family to the Los Angeles area in 1917 where he gradu- ated from Washington High School. George worked in the building trade as a lather and also worked in a knitting mill before becoming a car- rier for the U.S. Post Office in 1939, where he worked until he retired to Kernville in 1969. He served in the U.S. Navy from Dec. 1943 to Feb. 1946 stationed at the San Francisco Fleet Post Office and then at the Advanced Base Depot in San Bruno. There he met and married a Navy Wave, Grace (Gay) Jahnke. After his retirement from the Post Office, they managed the Sierra Trailer Lodge in Kernville for three years.


George loved photogra- phy and he had his own dark- room. He also was a model train enthusiast. He loved music and played the trum- pet. He loved fishing. He enjoyed traveling both in his RV and on cruises.


George was a 20-year member in good standing at the Kem River Valley Elks Lodge No. 2358. He had also kept his NALC union card for over 60 years.


George leaves Gay, his wife of 56 years; a sister, Kathryn, of Atascadero and her family; and a brother, Richard, of Fountain Valley, and his family. His daughter by a previous marriage, Georgia, predeceased him but he leaves her three chil- dren, Gerry, Nancy and Chris White and two great-grand- daughters, Stacey and Tonya. He also leaves many wonderful friends in the Kem River Valley.


A memorial service was held on March 16, 2002 at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights.


Arrangements by the Mish Funeral Home (Centennial) in Bakersfield.


Fredrick "Fred" Alphosus Cassidy


Fred Cassidy was born in Pueblo, Colo. on Nov. 19, 1914 and entered into eter- nal rest in Hanford, Calif. on March 9, 2002. He was pre- ceded in death by his par- ents, Fredrick and Lillian Cassidy, and his loving wife of 53 years, Eleanor.


Fred is survived by two daughters, Cecelia Misner of Carson, Calif, and Theresa Burke of Hanford, Calif .; four sons, Fredrick Jr. of Winters, Calif. and Patrick, William and Paul, all of Bodfish; two sisters, Kathleen Askew and Patricia Elbersol of Colorado; and four grandchildren.


He was a World War II veteran, honorably dis -. charged from the U.S. Army Air Forces on Dec. 29, 1945.


Fred was employed as a machinist for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co. He re- tired after 30 years of ser- vice. During his employment, he was a member of the Rod and Gun Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Los Angeles.


Fred and his family moved to the Kern River Valley in 1977. He loved the outdoors and worked part-time with the Forest Service for 20 years. His hobbies included building bird houses and wishing wells.


The last few months of his life were spent doing what he does best- gambling. He will be missed by his fam- ily and his many friends here in the valley. Services were entrusted to the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, fam- ily owned and operated.

Crystal "Chris" Sutton


Chris Sutton of Wofford Heights passed away qui- etly in the home of her daugh- ter in Redondo Beach on March 1, 2002 after a hard- fought year-long battle with cancer. She was 77 years old.


Chris was born on May 11, 1924 in Crystal Plains Township, Kansas. She moved to the South Bay area of Los Angeles in 1942 after high school graduation. In 1947 she met and married Bill Sutton and settled in Hawthorne, Calif. to raise their three daughters. She retired from Continental Air- lines in 1982 and she and Bill moved full time to their home in Wofford Heights. She was active in Ladies of the Elks and was named "Lady of the Elks" for 1995- 1996.


Chris is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bill; and daughters Deana (Terry) Trefz of Newbury Park and Linda (Tom) Dill of Redondo


Beach. She was “Grandma Rose" to six grandchildren: Tracy (Nick) Lacasella of Rancho Santa Margarita, Jenny (Brian) Smith of At- lanta, Ga., Christian Trefz of Newbury Park, Calif., Katie Dill of Boston, Mass., and Scott and Jeana Dill of Redondo Beach. She was great-grandma to Khelsea Trefz, Devyn Smith, Zachary Lacasella, Chase Smith and her own angel, Gabriel Lacasella, who was born on Christmas Day 2001. Also surviving are her brother-in - law Kenneth (Peggy) Sutton and sisters-in-law Bernice Barga, Ruth Duntz, Verna Duntz, Margarite Duntz and Bernadine Duntz. "Aunt Rose" will be missed by scores of nieces and neph- ews around the country. She was preceded in death by daughter Jeanne Sutton in 1971, and her parents and six siblings. Family was her greatest joy in life.


Chris's family wishes to thank Dr. Jaime Lee Ho and his staff for all their loving care, Dr. Chang and Josephine and all the nurses and respiratory staff at Kem Valley Hospital. We cannot possibly repay all the kind- ness from the Elks and La- dies of the Elks- especially those of Aggie, Lonnie and Julia. Thanks to Leah and Vaughn Gillette, who were always there when we needed them. Donations in her name may be made to the valley hospice program.


Victoria Lynn Busch


Victoria Lynn Busch was born March 17, 1953 in Santa Monica and died March 11, 2002 in Kernville.


Loving mother of Jessica Busch of Camarillo, Calif, Vicki grew up in Southern California and Sydney, Aus- tralia. A strong and expres- sive woman, she touched the hearts and minds of ev- eryone she met.


A graduate of the Univer- sity of Califomia at Santa Barbara, Vicki loved art and created some fine works of her own.


Vicki taught in Ventura for a time as an ESL instructor and more recently worked part time at Camp Owen. In fact, she seemed most happy when teaching.


In addition to her daugh- ter, Jessica, Vicki is survived by her husband, William Busch; her father, John H. Johnson of Kernville; her mother, Dorothy Fergusson of Santa Monica; and broth- ers Chris Johnson of Santa Barbara and Craig Johnson of Fort Walton, Fla.


A memorial service was held at the Lake Isabella Funeral Home on March 16, 2002.

Daniel A. Lodygowski


Daniel A. Lodygowski, 67, passed away March 16, 2002. Dan served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Korean Ser- vice Medal, and United Na-


tions Service Medal. He worked as a tuckpointer on the high rise buildings in Chicago and later in Los Angeles. After that, Dan was a finish carpenter. He lived in Montrose, Calif. but spent his free time in Kernville where he later retired. Dan · had many friends in both Montrose and Kernville.


As Dan requested, there was cremation and no ser- vices.


Donations to the Leuke- mia Society in Dan's name would be appreciated.


Although Dan has passed away, he will never be for- gotten.

Evelyn J. Lane


Evelyn J. Lane entered life on May 28, 1934, in Nash- ville, Ark. Evelyn was, raised in Arkansas until she was five years old and then moved to Oklahoma, where she grew up. It was during this time that she leamed many of the skills that she later became known and beloved for by her family. She became a good cook, and she loved to sew, quilt and knit, and she loved do- ing puzzles. In 1951, she married the love of her life, Wendell Jackson Lane. The two settled down in the city of Bell Gardens, Calif., where they began to raise their fam- ily together. The two pur- chased property here in the Kem River Valley and later moved to the Canebrake/ Onyx area. By looking at Evelyn's garden at their new home, you could tell that her
