Helen Pierce


Memorial services will be held Sat. Feb. 20, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lake Isabella for Helen Pierce who passed away at her home on Feb. 9, 1999 after a long illness. Officiating will be her son Charles Stevens.


Mrs. Pierce has been a resi- dent of the Kern River Valley for the past 11 years. She enjoyed reading and helping people, but most of all bringing people to the Lord.


Helen is survived by her hus- band of 16 years, Melvin Pierce of Mtn. Mesa, Calif., and her son Charles Stevens of Indiana and sister Irma and two brothers Ronaldo and Jim.

B. John Rutledge


Services: Thursday, February 18, at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 562 James Road, Kern- ville, Calif., with graveside ser- vices at Kern River Valley Cem- etery, in Wofford Heights.


John, 68, was born in Sasakwa, Okla., and lived most of his life in the Bakersfield and Wasco area. He was discharged


from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1954, and went on to have vari- ous occupations. Once known as "the man who talked to clocks," John moved to Wofford Heights in 1968 to be a "mountain man" and the only State Farm Insur- ance Agent in the Valley.


During his 31 years here, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge Scottish Rites, the Search and Rescue, and was once a Marshal for Early California Days.


He shared his life with his child- hood sweetheart and wonderful wife, Carmen. His other family members include: His mother, Lilly Rutledge; sister-in-law, Dor- othy Forsyth; children, Rod Dye, Rya Chasmar and John Rutledge; grandchildren, Pa- tience Dye, Jeff Hill, Matthew, Jeffrey and Joshua Rutledge; great grandson, Dylan Ledbetter. Also his daughter-in-law, Doreen Dye, and son-in-law, Mike Chasmar.


Thank you to all of his friends for your support during the past years. We know he is in a better place, and we love him dearly.


A viewing will be held Tues- day, Feb. 16 and Wednesday, Feb. 17, at Valley Mortuary, 6416 Lake Isabella Blvd., Lake Isa- bella from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Merle W. Ankrum


Merle W. Ankrum, 91, was born June 29, 1907 in Marshalltown, lowa. He worked in Marshalltown for 40 years at Dunham Burch Co. as the super- visor for Braun-Sharp Automatic Machines, then moving to Hemet, Calif., for 5 years, finally moving to Kernville. He enjoyed making wood bird houses and animals.


He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, John M. Ankrum of Hemet, Calif .; two daughters, Marcini Goodman of Marshalltown and Mae Bishop of Port Arthur, Tex .; six grand- children; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchil- dren.


Jacob Matthew Spears


Jacob Matthew Spears, be- loved son of James and Bettina Spears and brother of Jeremy Spears. Services were held on Sat., Feb. 20, 1999 at 2 p.m. at the Wee Kirk o' the Heather, Forest Lawn Glendale, Forest Lawn Mortuary.


Jeanne Spencer


Jeanne Spencer was born on July 30, 1921, to her parents John and Josephine Szymanski in Philadelphia, Penn. Jeanne was raised on the east coast of the United States, and in 1941, she married the love of her life, Angelo Spencer. Angelo was a member of the United States Navy who traveled a great deal, so Jeanne spent much of her early years moving around with him. Together, they traveled the world and had some wonderful experiences. This is one factor that helped in giving Jeanne a uniquely dry sense of humor, along with a sharp wit. Everyone who knew Jeanne, loved her im- mensely. In 1960, Jeanne and .


Claire, Annette, and Lee, and three cousins, Bobby, Joanie, and Carole. She is also survived by her niece, Linda, two very special long time friends Toby Adams and Caryl Len Gabbert, and by numerous other nieces and nephews.

Robert Dale Allen


Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 22, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Bob Dale Allen who passed away on Feb. 17, 1999 in Bakers- field, Calif. Officiating was Pas- tor Gary Nichols of the Full Gos- pel Church in Mtn. Mesa, Calif.


Bob was born in Kansas City, Kansas on Jan. 1, 1944 and lived in the Los Angeles area where he worked as a drapery installer for over 20 years before coming to the Kern River Valley in 1989. He lived in the Valley with his son Christopher Allen. He enjoyed restoring old cars, and he loved everyone in the valley. He never knew a stranger.


He is survived by his son Chris- topher Allen of Bakersfield, Bob Allen of Phoenix, Ariz., David Allen of Great Falls, Mont., his mother and father Nita and Jim Regney of Weldon, and half brother PeWee Allen of Brownsville, Tex. He will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends in the valley.

Gary Welcher


Gary was born in Los Angeles Nov. 22, 1944. He passed from this life into God's Kingdom on Feb. 26, 1999. He spent the last few months at Kern Valley Skilled Nursing Facility in Mt. Mesa. Gary is survived by his daughter Lana and son-in-law Jeff Elfstrom and five grandchildren of Lake Isa- bella; his daughter Jeane and son-in-law Bryan Hill of Bakers- field; his father Orville Welcher of Lake Isabella; his brother John and sister-in-law Darlene Welcher of Southlake; his sister JoAnn Taylor of Bodfish; Aunt Pat, Aunt Marye, Aunt lone, Uncle Jack and many cousins, nieces and nephews.


After high school Gary worked as a commercial fisherman in San Diego on a family owned boat. Then Gary was trained and worked as a journeyman master meat cutter for several large gro- cery chains in the Los Angeles area before moving to the valley. Gary was a P.B.A. bowling pro- fessional and won many awards. He taught bowling to a lot of the valley residents at Mt. Mesa Lanes. Gary liked to trout fish and loved this valley.


All the family would like to thank Kern Valley Hospital Acute Care and the Skilled Nursing Center for their care and kind- ness during Gary's illness.


We love you Gary and will see

Katherine Joyce Irving


Katherine Joyce Irving was born on May 3, 1937 and passed away Feb. 18, 1999. She is sur- vived by her husband, Michael' Wayne Irving; three daughters, Vicki & Don Dicksen, Elizabeth Kosharek & Dave Boosalis, Linda Wesala Baker & Wallace Baker, Alan Wesala; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, all of Lake Isabella; brother Don and Bar- bara Tolle of Bodfish; brother Bill and Jean Tolle of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister Nancy Kalb; Erlanger, Ky .; and many nieces and nephews.


Ernest Harvey Whitten


Ernest Harvey Whitten, 85, went to be with the Lord on Mon- day, Feb. 22, 1999 following a difficult battle with cancer. He departed this life at the Hylond Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Merced, Calif.


Harvey was born July 9, 1913 in Evening Shade, Ark. He and his late wife, Bessie, came to Calif., on 1944, moved to Kern County in 1947, and lived in Lake Isabella since 1981. Harvey was retired from Tosco, having worked 30 years in various ar- eas of the oil refinery. He was a faithful member of Mountain View Southern Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.


He is survived by two daugh- ters, Sarah Hobbs and her hus- band William Robert "Bob" of Merced, Calif .; and Sherry Gynendal Whitten of Corona, Calif .; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Nancy Johnson, her husband Aaron, and their son Travis Nathaniel of LeGrand, Calif .; David Hobbs, his wife Kristine, and their daugh- ters Kelly Erin and Katelyn Joy of Fresno, Calif .; a brother, Henry Oren "Jack" Whitten of Monette, Ark; and several nieces and nephews.


A graveside service was held Friday, Feb. 26, 1999 at 1 p.m. at the Hillcrest Memorial Park, Gar- den of Resurrection. Associate Pastor Bert Simpson, Lake Isa- bella, officiated.


Memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund of the Mountain View Southern Baptist Church, Lake Isabella, Calif.

Nina Reichert


Graveside services were held Sat. March 6, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Nina Reichert of Lake Isa- bella. Mrs. Reichert was born June 25, 1923 in Minsk, Russia and passed away on Feb. 28, 1999 in Mtn. Mesa after a long illness.


She moved to the United States from Germany in March 1956 and to the Kern River Val- ley in 1976. She began working at the Kern Valley Hospital Oct. 1980 as a Central Service Tech- nician until her illness. She touched many people's lives and was loved by all. She was very creative and the love she felt within was expressed by her lov- ing touch.

Alyce Mae Williams was born March 25, 1929 in Marithon, Tex. Her husband who passed before her was Gene Williams.

Gladys Mary Donovan


Private arrangements were made for Gladys Mary Donovan, who passed away March 6, 1999 after a long illness.


Mrs. Donovan was born April 2, 1918 in Cleves, Ohio and moved to the Kern Valley after retiring from the University of New Mexico 11 years ago. She en- joyed doing ceramics and was a volunteer at the senior center for nine years helping with the crafts.


Gladys is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Katherine Donovan of Ridge- crest; grandsons Jason Donovan of Ft. Hood, Tex. and Jeremy Donovan of Ft. Bragg, N.C .; granddaughters Traci (and Jim) Schoot of Baton Rouge, La., Michele D'Amico of Tampa, Fla., and Jacquelyn Donovan of Albu- querque, N.M .; and five great- grandchildren. Frances Elenor Fenner


Private arrangements were made for Frances Elenor Fenner. No services will be held as per her request.


Mrs. Fenner was born Aug. 20, 1912 in Crary, N. D., and passed away March 12, 1999 in Mountain. Mesa, Calif. She has been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 30 years. She was a great Mom.


She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Linda Fenner of Bodfish; daugh- ter and son-in-law Mary and Bill Keehn of Kingman, Ariz .; daugh- ter and son-in-law Thorene and John Beckmann of Covina, Calif .; daughter Marilyn Stonebraker of Mountain. Robert Lee Pruett


Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at 10 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge in Kernville for Robert Lee Pruett. Mr. Pruett was born in Los Ange- les, and moved to the Kern River Valley where he and his mother homesteaded up by Chimney Peak in the 1930's until he went into the Navy in 1942 and moved his mom to Weldon where he lived until he married Doris Bishop in 1952. He lived in Cane- brake for years, moving to Onyx. He worked for the state Division of Highways and retired after 34 years of service in 1968. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Kernville, the Scottish Rite in Bakersfield, American Legion and the VFW Post 7665.


He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Doris, of Onyx; his daughter Nina and her husband William Sharp of Pleasanton, Calif .; three grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Lloyd Pruett of Palm Springs, Calif. Arrange- ments by Valley Mortuary.

James Floyd Sadler


Funeral services were held on Wed. March 17, 1999 for James Floyd Sadler who en- tered eternal life March 12, 1999. James Floyd Sadler was born March 14, 1933 in Edna, Okla. He was a United States Army Veteran belonging to VFW post #7665. He was a resident of Lake Isabella for 12 years and a volunteer bingo caller for the Senior Center.


He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary I. Sadler; his first wife Virginia Flanagan and mother-in-law, Lucy Montoya; ten children, George, Linda, Robert, Gail, James Jr., Deb- bie, Annette, Elvis, Tina and Vickie; 15 grandchildren, Daphane, Amanda, Dena, Andrea, Jacqueline, Aaron, Chad, Kent, Cicily, Jonathan, Angelina, Elvis Jr., Adam, Brit- tany and Tara; two great- grandchildren, Justin, Austin and granddaughter Dena's unborn child; and his special friend Jackie Dog. Also, by his brothers and sisters, Red, MaryAnn, Bob, Rooster, Pauline and Danny; and many nieces and nephews. He was

Hazel B. Gibbins Watts


Hazel Bernice Gibbins Watts, 84, of Bodfish, passed away Sun. March 21, 1999 at her home.


She was born in Cushing, Payne Co. Okla., on Sept. 13, 1915 to Clyde Homer "Doc" and Winnie Davis Lavender Gibbins. She is preceded in death by her parents, two older sisters, Gladys Kelsey, Geor- gia Anders and a younger brother Melvin C. "Red" Gibbins. In her younger days she was a homemaker raising two children, she was a car- hop for a while before becom- ing a pottery painter for Gladdy McBean Franciscan Ware. She had painted the Desert Rose Pattern for many years, retiring in 1980.

She and her husband Lonnie M. Watts were married Sept.


29, 1933 in Oklahoma City, Okla., moved to California af- ter the birth of their daughter in 1935, a son was born in 1937 in California. The Watts family lived in and around Kern County before settling in Glen- dale and then later the Burbank area. They bought a home in Bodfish in 1992 where they enjoyed fishing and taking rides around the lake. They had been coming to the valley since the 1940's and intro- duced their children, grandchil- dren and great-grandchildren to the area.


Survivors include her hus- band Lonnie M. Watts of Bod- fish, daughter Jo Anne (Jody) Watts, Chadduck and husband Ronald of Bodfish, son Billy A. Watts of Burbank, grandson Michael A., wife Karen S. great grandchildren Colin A. and Laura E. Chadduck of Kirkland Wa., grandson Russell E., wife Susan M., great-grandchildren Brian D. and Loni Carol Chadduck of Thousand Oaks, grandson Daryl E., wife Erica and great-grandson Robert Watts of Palmdale. Several nieces, nephews, and other relatives in Tulare Calif., Or- egon and Texas.

Florence Rebecca Weiser


Funeral services were held Fri. March 26, 1999 at 11 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Florence Rebecca Weiser. The Ladies of the Elks were offici- ating. Interment was at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wof- ford Heights. Mrs. Weiser was born January 16, 1915 in Adel, Ga. and passed away on March 22, 1999 in Lake Isa- bella. She has been a resident of the valley from 1977. She was a volunteer at the Senior Center from 1983 and a past President of the Ladies of the Elks. She enjoyed Crocheting, doll making, crafts, and read- ing. She is survived by her brother Sam Griffin and wife Laura Fay and sister Flonnie Gourlay of Lake Isabella. Carroll Lawrence Griggs


Private arrangements were made for Carroll Lawrence Griggs who passed away on March 22, 1999 in Mtn. Mesa, after a long illness. Mr. Griggs was born March 31, 1916 in Arlington, Texas and has been a resident of the Kern Valley since 1972. He was a member of the Side Band CB'ers and the Side Walk CB'ers. He loved fishing and camping, but most of all he loved being with his grandchildren.


He is survived by his wife of 60 years Maggie Griggs and son and daughter-in-law James and Connie Griggs of Duncan, Ariz and two grand- children, Diane and her hus- band Ronald Sturm and Linda Kay Griggs.

John Ray Brewer


John Ray Brewer was born on June 11, 1955 in Tacoma, Wash. John was raised with a sense of self-reliance. He grew up to be a strong, independent don; his brothers, Steve and man who would never raise a Jim Brewer; sister Carrie, all of the Kern Valley. John is also survived by his sisters Sarah Payne, Carla Villalba , Kathy Villabla, all of Tacoma, Wa .; Donette Villabla of Lynwood, Wa. Most importantly, he is survived by his sons, AJ Brewer, Jacob Brewer and Jordan Brewer, for whom John dedicated his life to. John is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and by many, many specially friends and relations. hand to anyone out of violent wrong doing. John's brother Steve said that times were tough early on with his brother, but in the last couple of years, they grew close. No one who knew John ever really had a bad word to say about him. John had many, many friends, all of whom he helped out whenever he could. He was known to be a very smooth talker, who could pretty much sell you anything, including the shirt off your own back. The Arrangements by Valley Mortuary. thing that was most imprortant to John, however, were his sons. he loved his boys fiercely, and did everything he could for them. Of all things to remem- ber most about John, was that Lois Norma Leonard he loved and cared for his fam- ily and his friends. Unfortu- nately, John's time here with Age 66, beloved mother and friend, passed away March 21, 1999. Lois lived in Lake Isa- bella and donated much of her time to the Senior Center. She loved to play cards with her friends and go fishing. She will be missed by her family and friends. There will be no ser- vices. The number of people whose lives John touched was evident by the 200 plus people in attendance of his service. John will be truly missed by all and his absence will be felt for a long, long time. We love you John.

Kenton Milo Gritton

Memorial services were held Tues. March 30, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Bert Simpson offi- ciating for Kenton M. Gritton who was born on Feb. 9, 1919 in Urban, III., he left this world quietly as he lived it on March 24, 1999.


His wife of 56 years Eleanor, daughter and son-in-law Bar- bara and Jerry W. Phipps of Norwalk, Calif., granddaugh- ters Shara-Lea Phipps of Hurst, Texas and Kathleen and husband John Patterson of Victorville, Calif., sister-in-law Mary and three generations of numerous nieces and neph- ews will deeply miss him and the special country music he filled our younger days with, not only at McNally's before the lake, but at the many fam- ily gatherings held along the river. Kenton brought his young wife and baby daughter to Johnsondale shortly after WWII, making these moun- tains and Kern River his home, 'settling near the lake after the closing of the lumber mill, stay- ing here through all the many changes over the past 55 years, never losing sight of the mountains he loved, quietly wandering among the hills and canyons, and as he begins a new journey, we know his spirit still wanders along the river.

Madonna Irvine


A memorial service was con- ducted by the ladies of the Elks on Thursday March 18, 1999 for Madonna Irvine who was called by God at 1:20 p.m. * March 15, 1999. At her side, holding her hands was her husband of 42 years, Irv Irvine, } and her daugher Annette ! Collins. -


She is also survived by her son Larry Ormond; : grandaughter Donna Collins; grandson Christopher Collins, great-granddaughter Meghan : Collins and many nieces and . nephews.


Madonna was born in Ander- son Ind. on Sept. 18, 1917. She was 82 years old. In 1953 * Madonna and her son and daughter moved to El Porto Calif. to live with her mother. . On Nov. 10, 1956 she married her husband Irv in Manhattan Beach Calif. Madonna and Irv moved to Wofford Heights full time in 1981. Madonna was active in the Ladies of the Elks, Grandmothers Club #94, The Kern Valley Woman's Club, a Bunco Club and the Bingo Buddies.


Madonna was a sweet, gen- erous and charitable person and will be dearly missed by her family and her many friends.


Marguerite Ellen Allen


Marguerite was born Nov. I 10, 1909 in Flandreau, S.D. The daughter of Leon and Ber- tha Taylor, she married Lloyd Allen in 1951. She passed away on March 31, 1999. She is survived by her husband Lloyd of Lake Isabella; sister Eleanora Gardner of Modesto; daughter, Doris and son-in-law Robert Griswold of Mtn. Mesa; - step sisters Doris Dillinger of Oregon; Dixie Akers of Oregon, and step-son Hubert Allen of Arizona; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter Ardyce Davis of Buena Park, Calif., and grand- son Thomas Griswold of Long Beach.


Funeral services were held April 6 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isa- bella. Officiating was Pastor Dave Snow followed by inter- ment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights.

Lillian Rutledge


Graveside services were held April 2 at 11 a.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wof- ford Heights. Officiating was Pastor Dave Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isa- bella, Calif. Lilly was born in Oklahoma and lived most of her life in Kern County to the age of 90 years. She and her husband, Ode, had a building supply business for many years in Wasco, Calif. They moved to the Kern River Val- ley in 1971. Lilly is survived by her sister Calley Martin of Okla- homa; daughter Loree Rutledge of Lake Isabella; daughter-in-law Carmen Rutledge of Wofford Heights; grandchildren, David Rutledge of Lake Isabella; Rya Chasmar and husband Mike of Vista, Calif .; John Rutledge of Port- land, Ore .; Rodney Dye and wife Doreen of Wofford Heights; great-grandchildren Patience Dye of Bakersfield; Jeffrey Hill of Wallace, Idaho; Matthew Rutledge of Taft; Jef- frey Rutledge of Taft; Joshua Rutledge of Taft and great- great-grandchildren Dylan Dye of Bakersfield and Joshua Hill of Lancaster.

Claudia lona Hailey


Claudia was born Dec. 30, 1913 in Ryan, Okla. The daughter of Benjamin and Dessie Olivia, she was the youngest of 11 children. Her death came quietly after an extended illness on March 26, 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Myretta (Marty) Alcorn and husband Ed of Bod- fish; grandchildren Skip, Bobby, Becky, and Pat; 11 great-grandchildren; five great- great-grandchildren; five nieces; two dearest friends Lois Trotter and Faye Winemiller. She is also sur- vived by the "love of her life" her little dog named "Little Bit."

Lois Norma Leonard


Age 66, beloved mother and friend, passed away March 21, 1999. Lois lived in Lake Isa- bella and donated much of her time to the Senior Center. She loved to play cards with her friends and go fishing. She will be missed by her family and friends. There will be no ser- vices. Annie Louise Walden


Annie Louise Walden passed away on March 16, 1999. The Waldens have been in and out residents of this valley since 1964 and bought property here in 1973. She is survived by her husband Rob- ert of over sixty-five years, six children, fifteen grandchildren, and twenty-four great-grand- children.
