Viola Ella Vehlewald
Vi was the firstborn child of Edwin and Minnie Allemann, born on the family farm in Stonyhill, Missouri, November 16, 1913. She helped care for her four brothers and four sis- ters while her mother helped with the farm.
Vi was baptized and con- firmed at St. James Evangeli- cal Reformed Church (now the Church of Christ) in Stonyhill, Missouri. As a young woman, she moved to St. Louis where she worked doing housework while learning to be a hair- dresser and for some time owned her own beauty shop. She married Paul Vehlewald on April 2, 1938. They lived in St. Louis until after their son, Don, was born and then moved to California in 1945.
Paul and Vi settled in the Lakewood area and later moved to Downey. They owned a produce market near Knotts Berry Farm when it still was a berry farm. Paul joked about moving to California to get away from the family, then the family all moved out from Missouri and lived with Paul and Vi until they were settled into their own jobs and homes. Always a close knit family, they wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Vi eventually went to work sewing in the garment indus- try. She ended her career work- ing in the pattern department of Elisabeth Stewart Swim Wear Company. Working with the pattern maker she would" make and alter the swimsuits to get a perfect fit before they were manufactured.
The Vehlewalds owned a vacation home in Wofford Heights since 1965. When they retired, they moved there full time. Many people know Vi as a dealer of Shaklee products. She also did alterations. She never wanted to stop selling Shaklee products or doing the alterations because she al- ways enjoyed people dropping by her home. She made many friends this way and wanted to stay in her own home as long as possible to keep this social contact.
Vi was a member of the Lady Elks and was very active in the K.R.V. CB group. Her handle was Instant Protein, a name that suited her. She was al- ways active and busy. She worked for many years help- ing prepare the breakfasts on Saturday mornings at the C.B. Break. She attended the se- nior dances, enjoyed them even though she didn't dance for years because she suffered from arthritis. The ladies all wanted to dance with Paul and she spent the evening visiting.
After the death of Paul and her beloved sister, Selma, she seemed to give in to the pain of her arthritis.
Vi passed away on Novem- ber 28, 1997. A graveside ser- vice was held on December 2, 1997, at 1 p.m. at the Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wof- ford Heights. The service was conducted by Pastor Chuck Semonious of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband Paul; her sisters, Selma and Florence Allemann; and her brothers, Armin and Raymond Allemann.
She is survived by her son, Don, and daughter-in-law, Pat Vehlewald, of Kernville; her granddaughter, Julia, and her husband, Dale Dumke; and great-grandsons, Chris, Johnathan and Joseph, of Lancaster; her grandson, Gene, and his wife, Deena Vehlewald, of Walla Walla, Washington; her sisters, Betty Baer, of New Haven, Missouri; Evelyn Davis and her husband, Fred, of Fallbrook, California; her brothers, Roy Allemann, of Washington, Missouri; and Elmer Allemann and his wife, Lillian, of Hermann, Missouri; brother-in-law, Ollie Vehlewald, and his wife, Charleen, of Lake Isabella; and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Ernest A. Philippsen
Born September 7, 1910 in Rock Island, Illinois. Died De- cember 21, 1997 in Mt. Mesa, California.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Helen Conklin, his brother Henry Philippsen and his only son Ernie Jr.
He is survived by his wife Doris, of 56 years, his daugh- ter-in-law Karyn Philippsen of San Clemente and by many treasured friends. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins
He resided in Lake Isabella since 1984, spent 39 years in Los Angeles County and was a retiree from Lockheed Air- craft in Burbank. He was given the Pilgrim Degree of Merit in 1987 by the Loyal Order of Moose for many years of dedi- cated service to the fraternity he loved. He was a 37 year member (Reseda Lodge #1738 and Kern Valley #498).
In keeping with his wishes there will be no services. Re- mains will be privately interred in Chatsworth, California. He wished to share his favorite farewell message with all who know and loved him.
I'm Free
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path God laid for me;
I took His hand when I heard. Him call
I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day
to laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way
I found that place at the close of the day.
If parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss Ah yes, these things, I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow.
I wish you the sunshine of to- morrow.
My Life's been full, I savored much
Good friends, good times, a loved on's touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Lift up your heart and share with me God wanted me now. He set me free.
