Betty Jane Schaefer
Betty Jane Schaeferpassed away April 17, 2002 at age 79. She was the loving mother of Sandra Feldman, Janice Bennett and Shirley Floody.
Betty is also survived by five grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren. Private services took place and were arranged by Forest Lawn Mortuary in Cypress, Calif.
Donald L. Stubblefield
Donald L. Stubblefield was born on May 14, 1946 and passed away April 24, 2002.
Don was born in Bakers- field and moved to Johnsondale in 1949 at the age of three. He spent the rest of his life in "God's Country."
Don loved fishing, hunting and visiting with his friends in the valley.
Don is survived by his long- time friend and companion, Diane Wallace of Kernville; son Curtis Stubblefield; and grand- son Thomas Stubblefield of Bakersfield. He also left be- hind his sister and brother-in- law Velma and Jack Montgom- ery; sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Floyd Paisley of Morro Bay, sister-in-law Jo Cooper of Wofford Heights; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his daughter Donna and his brother Kenny.
His many, many friends will long remember him for his warmth and the jokes he had ready for all.
We will miss him greatly.
A memorial will be held at Riverside Park, May 11 at noon. All are welcome.

Richard Eugene "Dick" Smith
Dick Smith was born Dec. 17, 1935 in Lansing, Mich. and passed away on May 10, 2002 in Wofford Heights. He is survived by his wife, Billie Smith; daugh- ters Jewell Hoffman of Oceanside, Calif. and Sharri Cazares of Kernville; brother Elmer Smith of Colorado; brothers Tom and Russell and sister Rosemary of Michigan; and seven grandchildren- Summer, Rick, Jill, Tanner, Michelle, Amy and Priscella, all of California.
Dick Smith served in the U.S. Navy for 14 years and retired from McDonnell Douglas. He loved golf and going to Vegas.

John H. Randall
John Randall came into this world Jan. 8, 1927 in Cedar Rapids, lowa, son to Margaret and Parker Randall. During World War Il he was stationed in the China-Burma Theater (in what is now Pakistan.) It was there he met Lillian Gardner. There were mar- ried after they got out of the service, and settled in Inglewood, Calif. They had two sons, Christopher and John. In 1984, they moved to Wofford Heights.
John was a member of the National Rifle Associa- tion and the Golden Eagles. He was one of the founding members of the Kern River Valley Gun Association. He was a member of the Elks and Moose Lodges. An avid photographer, John prob- ably took pictures of just about everything and ev- erybody in the Kern River Valley. John and Lillian (Lill on the Hill), his wife of 54 years, threw big parties for their friends at their house up Evans Road in Wofford Heights. He was president of H.F. Int'l (a sideband ra- dio club with thousands of members worldwide).
John passed away on April 30, 2002 of pneumo- nia at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. John (Jack) will be missed by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his brother, George; his sons, Christopher and John (Jay); his daughter-in-law, Maria Elena; his two granddaugh- ters, Cynthia and Nicole; and his nieces Sandra Shatley and Sandra Miller.
A memorial service will be held at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights on June 9, 2002 at 11 a.m., with a lun- cheon to follow.

Lois Dunning Plumb
Lois Dunning Plumb, 91, passed away May 10, 2002 at the Skilled Nursing Fa- cility in Kern Valley Hospi- tal in Mountain Mesa.
Lois was born Morristown, S. D., on Oct. 1, 1910. She lived in the Lake Isabella area for the past four years.

Lois enjoyed her family and knitting afghans for her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She also en- joyed reading.
Lois is survived by her children, Curtis Plumb of Santa Monica and Nancy Jose and her husband Bob of Lake Isabella; four grand- children; eight great-grand- children; five great-great- grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; brother Claude Dunning of Scottsdale, Ariz .; and sis- ters Dorothy Rossback of Kernville and Patricia Heady of Huntington Beach, Calif.
A memorial service was held on May 15, 2002 at Weldon Southern Baptist Church, officiated by Pas- tor Bill Lewis.

Nancy Jane Boulware
Memorial services were held May 18, 2002 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Lake Isabella for Nancy Jane Boulware, 91, who passed away May 7, 2002.
Mrs. Boulware was born on March 23, 1911 in Hannibal, Mo. and resided in Kern County for 20 years. Mrs. Boulware had worked as a clerk for a dry cleaning business. She is survived by her family, congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Mrs. Boulware had a firm belief- "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be any- more. The former things have passed away" (Rev- elation 21:4)- and she was · faithful to that belief.
"Do not marvel at this be- cause the hour is coming in which all those in the me- morial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment" (John 5: 28-29).

Leland "Lee" Goss
Leland "Lee" Goss was born on a grape ranch, northeast of Fresno. His parents were Calvin Richie and Mabel O. Goss. Lee was the youngest and fourth child. He had three sisters, Vera, Ardith and Frances.
Lee graduated from Bell High School in L.A. and at- tended Compton Jr. College. His trade was Millwrights of United Brotherhood of Car- penters, and he achieved the status of business manager and representative before re- tirement.
He was a member of the Al Malaikah Temple, Elks Lodge No. 2358, Moose Lodge, Kern Valley Golf Course, and the Kern Val- ley Gun Association.
His first wife, Margaret, passed away in 1982. They had three children- Gary L., Timothy J. and Mary Sh- annon. Lee has five grand- daughters and four great- grandchildren.
Lee married Arminta (Minty) Osborne in 1990 and lived happily ever af- ter. Thank you, Minty!

Jerry Colman McMahan
Funeral services were held May 14, 2002 at the Christian Assembly Church in Mountain Mesa for Jerry McMahan, who went home to be with the Lord on May 8, 2002 in Bakersfield. Offi- ciating was Pastor Dan Hellyer. Interment was at Riverside National Cem- etery in Riverside, Calif.
Jerry moved to the Kern River Valley four years ago after retiring from the air conditioning and heating business. He and his wife attended the Full .Gospel Fellowship under Pastor Gary Nichols; then in Octo- ber 2000 upon the retire- ment of Pastor Nichols they attended the Christian As- sembly under Pastor Dan Hellyer. Jerry became their sound man and all-around handyman.
Jerry was a member of the Kern Valley Corvette Club and loved attending antique car shows. His fa- vorite hangout was the Pizza Factory every Friday night. He was known for the practical jokes he played on the Friday night group.
He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Navona McMahan of Lake Isabella; daughter and husband Kim and Dan Davis; daughter Janet Bradney; daughter Kathy and husband Charlie Keith; daughter Christine and husband Christopher Callahan; son Marshel Crank; daughter Debbie and husband Kenneth Stanley; two sisters, Tildon Smith and Mary Hines; and seven grandchildren. Jerry will be greatly missed.
Arrangements were made with Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella.
Arthur "Art" Edward Peterson, Jr.
Art Peterson was born in Sisston, S.D. to Arthur and Virginia Peterson on Aug. 8, 1915 and entered into eter- nal rest on May 15, 2002 at his home in Lake Isabella.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy during two wars. He worked as an elec- trician in the steel mill in- dustry for over 25 years.
Art loved animals and working in his garden. He enjoyed family outings and loved to barbecue. He really appreciated the Fourth of July fireworks displays. He had such an interest in his- tory, he could not pass a monument by without stop- ping to read it. He loved to read.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose- mary. He is survived by his daughters, Patty Rowland of Palmdale, Calif. and Pam Peterson of Lake Isabella; sons Arthur Peterson of Little Rock, Calif., Allan Peterson of Minneapolis and John Peterson of Lake Isabella; sister Margaret Crandall of Trinidad, West Indies; grandchildren Kellie, Derek, Tanya, Kentress, Melody, Tom and Wynter; and great-grandchildren Brady and Hannah.
Private services were en- trusted to the Lake Isabella Funeral Home, a family owned and operated funeral home.
Junior Clell High
Junior High was born to his parents John and Gertie on March 20, 1927, in Lind- say, Okla. and passed away on May 14, 2002, in Moun- tain Mesa.
When he was 10, Junior and his family moved to Shafter, Calif., where as a young man, he began work- ing in the farming industry. In 1973, while working in Bakersfield, Junior met the love of his life, Melissa Jane Brown. The two married and began building a life to- gether, moving to Lake Isabella in about 1987. Jun- ior and Melissa spent time here outdoors fishing and pursuing their second love, country music.
Memorial services were held on'May 18 in the chapel at Valley Mortuary in Lake Isabella. Pastor Preston North of Mountain View Southern Baptist Church of- ficiated.
Junior Clell High is sur- vived by his loving wife, Me- lissa, of Lake Isabella; his brothers, Robert High of Lake Isabella, Jack High of Stockton, Calif., and Charles and Bobby High of Poplarville, Miss .; sisters Pearl Thompson, Sybil Olson, Edna Shreffler and Linda Zilch, all of Fresno, Calif .; special friends Ken- neth and Pattie Riggs of Anderson, Calif., Bob and Sue Coogle of Lake Isabella and Marilyn Strong and Jack Montgomery, also of Lake Isabella. Junior was preceded in passing by his brother, Newton High of Grover City, Calif.

Michael Evan Miranda
Michael Evan Miranda was born in Redlands, Calif. to Phillip and Beverly Miranda on Oct. 4, 1962. Michael passed away in Bodfish on May 9, 2002.
Michael was raised in the Kern Valley and spent his life here. Michael graduated from Kern Valley High School. He was very active in sports and was quite a baseball pitcher.
Michael was very proud of his sons, Klayton and Nathanial, and his brother Matt. Mike was also very proud of his Indian heritage, his stay in the Army, his fish- ing skills, his artistic endeav- ors and his big rig trucking business, Miranda Trucking.
Mike was taught to fish by his Grandpa Barr when he was very young and you could find him most days
down at the lake fishing and enjoying the scenery.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, Phillip W. Miranda, Sr. and his brother, Phillip W. Miranda, Jr.
He is survived by his mother, Beverly Miranda and brother Matthew Medland; sons Nathanial and Klayton Miranda; Uncle Randy and Aunt Rochelle Barr; longtime love and companion, Julie Greenwood; faithful friend since kindergarten Sean Dowd; aunts and uncles Virgil and Bertha Eller, Rob- ert and Gerrie Creech, Jim and Alberta Garrett, Don and Wilma Sprouse, Ruthie Bencoma, Clifford Miranda, Edna Stone, Rocky and Judy Stone, Dale and Betsy Johnson, Anthony Stone and Josephine Stone; great- uncle Jim Andreas and many cousins.
Michael touched many hearts with his beautiful blue eyes and big smile and will- ingness to help others. He will be everlastingly and deeply missed by family and friends.

Grace Gibbs Chadduck
Grace Gibbs Chadduck was bom Jan. 28, 1910 in Union, Hardin County, lowa, and passed away May 29, 2002 at the age of 92. She was the last of her family of three sisters and two broth- ers. Her parents were Elza Gibbs, born in New Provi- dence, Hardin County, lowa and Maggie Novella White- head Gibbs, born in Yadkin County, N.C.
Grace and her brothers and sisters were raised on the farm in lowa, moving to Marshalltown, lowa after their father's death. The fam- ily then moved to Califomia except for one brother, who remained in lowa.
She met husband Walter Carroll Chadduck when he brought her older sister home · from a date. They were mar- ried on July 25, 1931. They
had three children- son Ronald and two daughters, Jean and Doris.
Grace raised her family with husband Walter in Glen- dale, Calif. She also raised two of her grandchildren. She was a mother most of her life. Upon passing of her hus- band Walter Feb. 5, 1998, she lived in Glendale until October 1999, when she moved to Bodfish to live with her son and daughter-in-law.
Grace leaves behind son Ronald Carroll Chadduck and his wife Jody of Bodfish; daughter Jean Chadduck Alan of Tahoe, Nevada; daughter Doris Lindsey of Glendale. She also leaves six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren-Mike, wife Karen and children Colin and Laura Chadduck of Kirkland, Wash .; Russ, wife Sue and children Brian and Loni Carol Chadduck of Thousand Oaks, Calif .; John

Lena Mae Pysarchyk
Lena Mae Pysarchyk was bom April 14, 1913 in Fowler,. Kansas and passed away at Kern Village Assisted Living in Kemville on May 26, 2002.
Lena Mae was preceded in death by her loving hus- band, Paul; her son, Jimmy Lee, three brothers and four sisters. She is survived by her brother, Bill Cavner, of Manti, Utah; nephew Bill Cavner of Merced, Calif .; and niece Jean Carson Lewis of Conroe, Texas.
Lena moved to California during the Depression. Her love of dancing and music followed her throughout her life. She was a dance instruc- tor and never missed a chance to kick up her heels at the Wednesday night Senior Cen- ter dance. She also enjoyed traveling. She was a past member of the Women of the Moose, the Bodfish Beamers, the Grandmothers Club and the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church.
A celebration of her life was held on June 2, 2002 at . 1 p.m. at the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church. Burial followed at the Kern River Valley Cemetery. Lake Isabella Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Viola Zuma Bench
Viola Zuma Bench was born in Tishomingo, Okla. on Oct. 15, 1913 and en- tered into eternal life on May 23, 2002 in Bakers- field, Calif. She was a resi- dent of Bodfish, Calif. for 15 years, and was a de- voted mother and loved tak- ing care of her home.
She is survived bv her daughters- Nadine Matthews of Las Vegas, Nev .; Louise Rochman of Chatsworth, Calif .; Beverly Vavra of Bodfish; and Betty Still of Southlake- and a brother, Odie Chaney of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Graveside services were held at Eternal Valley Cem- etery in Newhall, Calif. on May 31, 2002 with Pastor Jack Dilley officiating.
Services were entrusted to the Lake Isabella Fu- neral Home, a family owned and operated funeral home.

Mavis Merrick
Graveside services were held June 6, 2002 at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Mavis Merrick, who passed away on June 2, 2002. Offi- ciating was Pastor Gene Bush of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella.
Maris Vera Heath was born to Kenneth and Julia Heath on July 19, 1917 in Osseo, Wisc. She moved to California at age 16 to be close to her dear sister Doris and then they moved to Inglewood where she met and married her husband Fred. Mavis stayed home while Fred worked and she raised seven children. She loved camping, fishing and gardening. She also went back to school in 1968 at El Camino College. She loved to write and wrote for the Reader's Digest at times. Mavis was a very gentle and loving person and her family was the most important thing to her. She was always giv- ing of herself. She was pre- ceded in death by her hus- band of 49 years, Fred, and her daughter Julia.
Mavis is survived by her daughter Betty and husband Mark Beasley; daughter Patti and husband Danny Rabitoy; daughter Diana Keck; daugh- ter Susan Blair; son Fred and wife Debbie Merrick; son Larry and wife Janyse Merrick; 17 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; brother Harold Heath; and two sisters, Mattie Thomason and Shirley Heath. She will be missed very much.

Ralph Douglas Hogan
Ralph Douglas Hogan, 82, passed away June 4, 2002 in Mountain Mesa. Mr. Hogan lived in the Mountain Mesa area for the past 23 years after moving here from the Chino area in the late 1970s.
Mr. Hogan was the past. president of the Good Sam Club's Kern Valley Rovers chapter. Before moving to the Kem River Valley, Ralphspent many years in the construc- tion trade where he was a superintendent with Spencer . and Jones.
Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Essie. He is survived by his
loving wife of 29 years, Allegra "Dodie" Hogan; son Ralph Jr. (Freda) of South Carolina; daughter Vikki (Terry) Lam- bert of Alta Loma, Calif .; son Ed (Donna) Hogan of Bakers- field; daughter Rose (Albert) Guerrero of Inyokem; son Rick of Ely, Nevada; son Bob (Lori) Hogan; daughter Jane of Arcadia; son Joe (Antoinette) of Highland, Calif .; grandchil- dren Sheri, Jeff, Todd, Chad, Jennifer, Doug; Sarah, An- drea, Joel, Gabrielle, Lee Phillip, Adam, Amanda, Amy, Christian and Jeremiah; and numerous nieces and neph- ews in Mississippi and Ten- nessee.
A memorial service for Ralph was held June 7, 2002 at the Christian Assembly in Mountain Mesa. Pastor Dan Hellyer officiated. Visitation followed at the Lake Isabella Funeral Home. Interment was on June 8 at the Oakdale Me- morial Park Cemetery in La ' Veme, Calif. Pallbearers were Ed Hogan, Bob Hogan, Joe Hogan, Doug Hogan, Albert Guerrero and Terry Lambert.

Catherine "Kitty" Watkins
Longtime Kern River Val- ley resident Catherine "Kitty" Watkins, 61, died June 5, 2002 at San Joaquin Community Hospital in Bakersfield.
Mrs. Watkins was born July 25, 1940 in California. She was a resident of the Kem River Valley for 27 years and taught school in the local school system for 10 years.
Many will remember her for her "Kitty Korner" column in a local newspaper, where she wrote of life's events. She of- ten wrote about the happen-
ings of her children Stacey and Steven, and the family pets.
As a commercial artist for the Indio Daily News, she was instrumental in producing an award-winning tabloid for the Bob Hope Desert Classic golf tournament in Palm Springs. Her drawings were recognized by leading businesses in that area and were often used in their advertisements. She also won first place in cover design in a California newspaper con- test. It was while working at the Indio Daily News that she met her husband, John.
Her family remembers her as a wonderful wife, mother, and most especially grand- mother to her granddaughter Lexie. She was a great friend to those whom she consid- ered friends. They will remem- ber her as a soft-spoken per- son who rarely raised her voice and was always there to lend a hand when needed.
She was preceded in death by her son, Stanley, 6, and her father, Stanley Twaroski, 98.
Mrs. Watkins is survived by her husband, John Watkins; and her children and their
spouses Stacey and Adam Sanders and Steven and Jen- nifer Watkins and grand- daughter Lexie Watkins.
Visitation was Sunday evening at Valley Mortuary of Lake Isabella. Services were Monday at St. Jude's Catholic Churchin Wofford Heights and burial took place at Kem Val- ley Cemetery.

John Harlan Peterson
Private arrangements were made for John Harlan Peterson, who passed away after a long illness on June 10, 2002 in Bakersfield.
Mr. Peterson was bom Jan. 20, 1909 in Valley, Neb. to John and Amanda Peterson. He moved to Pasadena, Ca- lif. in 1939 and met his wife, Alberta, in 1942 at Douglas Aircraft where they both worked. They were married in 1944 and moved to Kern County in June 1947 where John went to work for the Naval Weapons Center in Ridgecrest. They bought their property in Weldon in 1961 and have been residents since 1964.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lela. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alberta; his sister Maruly Johnson of Texas; brother Warren Peterson of Washington; sev- eral nieces and nephews; and his loving companion, "Cutie Pie."
The family would like to thank the Gambro Dialysis in Bakersfield and Emmanuel San Joaquin Nursing Home for their outstanding care given to John and most of all our wonderful friend Susan.

Richard Eugene "Gene" Kennedy
Gene Kennedy was bom on Dec. 15, 1937. in Alliance, Neb. and passed away on June 11, 2002 in Lake Isabella.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Alice Kennedy; his brother, Robert Kennedy; his son, Ri- chard E. Kennedy; and his stepson, James Johnson.
Gene is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nakota; sons John Johnson and Robert Johnson of Oregon, William Johnson of Coming, Calif., Edward Kennedy of Phoenix, Ariz. and Rudy Kennedy of Oregon; daughter Gail Browning of Bakersfield; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers Donald of Missouri, Maurice of Independence, Calif., Charles and James of Oklahoma and Clifford of Johannesburg, Calif .; sister Sharon Scarbrough of Terra Bella, Calif. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene attended Randsburg High School from 1951 to 1954. He then served in the U.S. Army.
Gene lived and worked most of his life in Kem and Inyo counties as a master mechanic, a rancher and later in life as a motel manager with his wife, Nikki.
He enjoyed racing stock cars, camping, fishing and traveling. He was a devout follower of the NASCAR cir- cuit and will be missed each Sunday when the checkered flag drops.

Doreen N. Mcintosh
Doreen N. Mcintosh passed away on June 5, 2002 at the age of 71.
She is survived by daugh- ter Heather Pemberton and soon-to-be son-in-law John Russo of San Pedro, Calif .; daughter Wendy and J.C. Frank of Lake Isabella; son Randy C. Mcintosh of Lake Isabella; her only grandchild, Jarrod R. McIntosh of San Pedro; sister and brother Gail Gallow and David Smith of Toronto, Canada; and many friends in the Lake Isabella area. She will be greatly missed by everyone.
Thomas Harvey Matlack
Longtime resident of the Kem Valley, Thomas Harvey Matlack, descendent of the Hinkey family of Kemville, is with his beloved Jesus and his family and friends who have gone on before. After a short bout of Lou Gehrig's disease, Tom passed away peacefully April 16, 2002. At his bedside his loving wife Nancy was in constant atten- dance. He is also survived by his loving children, Tom Jr. of Boise, Idaho; daughter Maria McAbel of Sparks, Nevada; other family members Ann Clements, Dennis Hinkey and Jimmy MacPherson of the Kern Valley; his stepson Simon; and his stepdaughter Sacheen.
Quoting Scripture, Thomas said, "My end is better than my beginning." Thomas was loved and will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched.

Wilma "Pearl" Rich Delano
Graveside services will be held June 25, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Kem River Valley Cem- etery in Wofford Heights for Wilma "Pearl" Rich Delano.
step-great-great-grandchildren. Pearl lived in Kansas until 1941 when the family moved to Long Beach, Calif. In 1970 Pearl and Francis retired in Lake Isabella. She loved to fish and was an expert. She knew where the best fishing holes were located, whether by boat or shore. She also loved to garden and dance. Pearl will always be remem- bered for her "Pearlisms."

Arden Larden was bom to Lewis and Caroline Larsen on Jan. 6, 1915 in Mason City, lowa. He enteredinto restearly in the moming on June 8, 2002 in Bakersfield.
