The following is a tribute to Hazel from one of her grand- children:

'On Saturday, I rushed around all afternoon getting ready to come home. I finally had some time to relax on the plane and began to think about everything my grandmother meant to me. I remember her being strong-willed and inde- pendent. She raised her own family; and then raised my sis- ter and me, for the most part. She had not only the responsi- bility of raising two of her grand- children, but also of caring for her husband, who was physi- cally disabled. She accepted these responsibilities without complaint and was devoted to caring for all of us. She taught me the basics to live by: Re- spect your elders, treat people as you would like them to treat you, always do your best.

"She taught me how to read before I ever started school. She taught me the importance of education and instilled in me an intense curiosity about the world around me. The gifts she gave to me are priceless and I hope to pass them along to my own chldren someday. She was mother, teacher, counselor, and friend. She was all these things and more, to me and to all the other people she touched in her life."
