Maxine loved to play bingo and was a regular on Thurs- day nights at the Elks Lodge in Wofford Heights.

Richard (Dick) Grant Sterling
Dick Sterling passed away on Friday, July 10, 1998. He had been ill for several years.
Dick was born April 29, 1936 in Fullerton, Calif. He lived in the L.A. area until 1979 when he moved to the Lake Isabella area. He worked as a machin- ist for many years. However, his last job with the U.S. For- · estry Service was what he en- joyed most and took great pride in.
Dick enjoyed being outdoors. Fishing, gardening and wood working were important to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gale and Mildred, his son, Ricky and brother-in-law, Lanson Joyner. He is survived by his sister,

Michael Arthur Meehan
Michael Arthur Meehan, age 63, passed away June 30, 1998, in Santa Paula, Calif., after a lengthy illness. He was born June 16, 1935. He worked as a Quality Engineer for 30 years for Allied Signal. Mr. Meehan taught sailing, enjoyed hiking and fishing in the Sier- ras, he loved sail racing and cruising. He was involved in Little League and AYSO as a coach, and the Professional Association of Innkeepers In- ternational.
He owned and operated the Kern River Inn Bed and Break- fast in Kernville from 1991 to 1994.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Andrews of Santa Paula, Calif .; sons Patrick James Meehan of Torrance, Calif., and Michael Carl Meehan of El Segundo, Calif .; step-sons Steven Todd Andrews of Rossmoor, Calif., Richard Michael Andrews of Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Donald Lawrence Andrews of Torrance, Calif .; mother Aileen Maire Osborn of Northridge, Calif .; sister Susan Roline Rudnicki of Newbury Park, Calif .; grand- child Shannon Aileen Meehan of Torrance, Calif .; and step- grandchildren Jessica, Adam Alexix, Jacob, and Mackenzie Andrews.
Services will be at St.'James Catholic Church, Torrance, Calif., Thursday, July 16, 1998, at 11 a.m. Ashes will be scat- tered at sea at a later date.

Richard (Dick) Glenn Hartman

Entered into rest on July 15 at the age of 70 years. Glenn was born in Whittier, Calif. to William and Anna Hartman. His father, mother, six broth- ers, Alfred, Wilmer, Lee, Walt, Kenny, Ernie, two sisters Irma and Bernice moved to Victorville, Calif. where Glenn grew up. He became affiliated with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #12. First as a heavy equip- ment operator and later as a business agent. In 1984 he and his wife moved to Onyx. Glenn has enjoyed his church, ranching, hunting and garden- ing. Loving husband to Marilyn Hartman, beloved father to Elaine Cornish, Dana Dehnert, Luane Orsborn, Blake Byrket, Scott Byrket, Frank Byrket, and Gary Hartman. Grandfather to Stacey Clay, Dennis Cornish, Robert Cornish, Jennifer Dehnert, Rebecca Byrket, Glenn Byrket, Cheyene Embree and Debbie Byrket. Great-grandfather to Randi Clay, Samantha Clay, Bran- don Cornish and Austin Cor- nish. Glenn was also very blessed with numerous nieces, nephews and many other lov- ing family members and friends. Friends are invited to attend services at the Full Gos- pel Fellowship Church in Mt. Mesa with Pastor Gary Nichols officiating at 10:00 am on Sat- urday July 25. Glenn Cole
Glenn Cole, age 60, passed away July 15, 1998 at his home in Wofford Heights. He was born. Aug. 28, 1937 in Ohio and was the oldest of 8 chil- dren to Eugene and Dorothy Cole.
He and his wife of 41 years lived in the L.A. area until retir- ing in 1990 to the peace of the Lake Isabella community. .
While fishing each day, he enjoyed the things he loved best, being surrounded by the beauty of the lake, the com- panionship of his fishing bud- dies, and the thrill of the catch.
Glenn was a beloved hus- band, father, and grandfather. He touched the lives of those he came in contact with by his extreme generosity, his undy- ing patience and his devotion to family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Jeanette, daughters Cheryl Canto, Sandy Martinez and Nancy Walker, who will miss him very much. .
We will forever take with us the things he has taught us, relax, be patient and think big.
Clara Madeline Cartwright
Memorial Services will be held Saturday July 25, 1998. at 10:00 am at Mt. View South- ern Baptist Church in Lake Isa- bella, Calif. for Clara Madeline Cartwright. Officating will be Pastor Bert Simpson. Mrs. Cartwright was born October 14, 1898 in Hebron, N. D. and passed away July 9, 1998 in Mt. Mesa, California just short of her 100th birthday. She was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 14 years. She was the oldest of 12 children and during the 1917 flu epidemic in North Dakota she lost her par- ents and a sister and 2 broth- ers, she kept the family to- gether for as long as she could and then they went to St. Jo- seph, Mich. to a Baptist or- phanage. She moved to Chi- cago and later married Henry William Cartwright in 1924 and moved to California in 1943. She was very active in her church and family life was very important to her. She was preceded in death by her hus- band Henry in 1962. She moved to the Kern Valley in 1982. She is survived bv her son and daughter-in-law Jerry (Jay) and Joyce Cartwright of Kernville and son Paul Cartwright of Santa Clara and sisters, Elsie Hollester of Alhambra, Pat Bouris of Mendicino, Calif. and Gertrude Smith of Walnut Creek, Ca. and 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Charlean Marie Downing
Charlean Marie Downing, 57, born in Cobden, III. on June 23, 1941, died July 15, 1998 at 1:48 a.m. at her home in Lake Isabella with her daughters at her side.

She was preceded in death by her long-time companion Roger Schubert. She is sur- vived by her daughters and - son-in-laws TeAnna and Joe Hill, Dawn and Tommy Vasquez and Marcie and Matt Farnum and her nine grand- children. In loving memory of our Mother -she was the core of our family and the strength that bound us together through the hardships, and no burden was ever too big for her. She was strong through her struggle with lung cancer. We will miss her deeply.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, July 25, 2 p.m. at All Faith Chapel Hall, China Lake Naval Weapons Center.
Robert Schubert

Roger Schubert, 55, passed away in his sleep at his Bodfish home on July 12, 1998. Roger was born Dec. 16, 1942 in Port Jefferson, N.Y. He worked for Grumman Aerospace Corpo- ration for many years before moving to the Kern Valley nearly 30 years ago. During his time in the valley, he shoed horses and worked at Isabella Market before taking a position at China Lake Naval Weapons Center. He was survived for a short time by his partner in life, Charlean Downing. He is also survived by his father, Charles Schubert and sister Anna Grace. He was an intelligent, loving and funny man who is greatly missed by those who love him.
Memorial services for Roger and Charlean will be held Sun- day, July 25, 2 p.m. at All Faith Chapel, China Lake Naval Weapons Center.
George B. Albin
George passed away July 12, 1998. He was born in Texas and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. In- trepid. George moved to Kern River Valley 38 years ago and was very active in all the valley activities including becoming Whiskey Flat Mayor and Early California Days Marshal. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, V.F.W., and Elks. George enjoyed bartending, flying and fishing and enjoyed a good time. He was a very loving man and always had time to help someone, he had many friends. George is pre-, ceded in death by his wife Bar- bara (well known local Real- tor). He is survived by his son George Albin Jr. and wife Alta from Downey, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren of L.A. County. George was loved an will truly be missed. Services were held at graveside on July 17, 1998.at 10:00 a.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery.
John Fife
Graveside services were held Monday, July 20, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. for John Fife, of Weldon, at Loma Vista Memo- rial Park in Fullerton, Calif. In- terment followed. He was born Feb. 26, 1924 in Sydney, Aus- tralia and passed away July 15, 1998 at Kern Valley Hospi- tal.
He was survived by his sons, Lawrence and John; daughter Lawren Stone; grandchildren, James, Gregory, Russel, Timothy, Scott, Sonny and Lari Fife, and Jeffrey, Natasha, Karma, Sara and Simon Stone.
Lillian A. Jamison
Lillian A. Jamison was born November 3, 1904 in Chaseley, North Dakota. She taught school in Washburn, North Dakota for 12 years be- fore moving to California in 1937. She met her future hus- band, Edward J. Jamison, while they were working at an Army depot durning World War Il. They lived in Rancho Bernardo near San Diego until his death in 1979. She then moved to Huntington Beach and eventually to Lake Isa- bella nine years ago. Lillian passed away July 10, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield. It was discovered she had throat cancer and they did sur- gery on her trachea to allow her to breathe. She had com- plications from internal bleed- ing after her first radiation treat- ment. She was wonderfully healthy all during her life so it was extremely stressful on her to be hospitalized, have sur- gery and go through radiation treatment. She was a Chris- tian woman who was always grateful for the wonderful life she had. She had no children of her own, but leaves nieces Lorraine Sartoris, Donna Connelly Hoegee, Bette Tulp, Sharon Neil, Marlene Eastman, LaVon Moore and one nephew, Dick Tulp of Val- ley City, N. D. and many, many great-nieces and great-neph- ews. Everyone who met her found her to be a sweet, kind, and loving person who always had a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. Fu- neral srrangements were made with Lake Isabella Fu- neral Home. Burial will be at Rose Hills Cemetery, Whittier, Ca.

. John David Wegner
Funeral services were held on July 17, 1998, at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, in Wofford Heights. Pastor Bert Simpson officiated with the Honor Guard of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the La- dies' Auxiliary performing the Veterans Burial Rights. John David Wegner was born on May 30, 1918, in the mid-west- ern state of Indiana. John be- gan working at an early age, and developed a love of "work" that was amazing. During World War II, he served his country proudly as a sergeant in the United States Army. During the war, John married Iris Sanders, the woman he chose to spend the rest of his life with. In his years, John was self-employed as a general contractor, doing a great deal of residential construction. He was very much liked by every- one he worked with and well- respected by his customers, co-workers and crews for his honesty and professionalism. John and Iris both believed in hard work, but they also en- joyed taking vacations in their motorhome, visiting their son and their very special grand- children, and going to new places they had never been, but also going to some of the old places that they knew and loved. All in all, John was a great husband, father, and grandfather. In 1975, John and Iris both retired and moved from Burbank to the Kern River Valley, settling down in Lake Isabella. Soon after, however, John and Iris both decided to go back to work. John contin- ued as a contractor and Iris worked as a Realtor for 12 years. John and Iris were mar- ried for nearly 56 years before Iris fell ill and passed away in April of this year (1998). After her passing, John made sure that he settled all issues in his life because he could feel the · Lord's calling. All too soon af- ter, John went home to be with the Lord. John David Wegner passed away in the wee hours of the morning of July 15, 1998.

Iris had helped the Lord pre- pare a place for him in heaven and he went home to be with her, and probably to go back to work with Iris for the Lord.
John David Wegner is sur- vived by his only son, Doug, of Santa Cruz, Calif. Also by his loving granddaughters, Amanda and Katie Wegner, his brother Bill, and his sisters Rosemary and Ruth. And by a very special friend, Diana Miller. John will be very much missed by his loving family and his special friends.

Lloyd Franklin Burkhardt
Lloyd Burkhardt was born on May 12, 1921, in Minne- apolis, Minnesota, to his par- ents Frank and Clara Burkhardt. His parents instilled in him a strong sense of family values that stayed with him all his life, all of which he passed on to his own family through the years.
In September of 1942, Lloyd entered the United States Army Air Corps and proudly served his country. On April 15, 1945, Lloyd married the love of his life, Dorothy, in Chicago, IlI. Five months later, he was hon- orably discharged from the service, and he and Dorothy began building their life to- gether. Lloyd began working for Wing Aircraft as a sheet metal mechanic. During this time, their family began to grow, having three sons and two daughters. In 1977, Lloyd and Dorothy retired, picked up their roots, and then replanted them here in the Kern River Valley. During his time, Lloyd was a terrific husband and a wonderful father. He loved his family fiercely. He loved the
outdoors, taking his kids camp- ing, and snow skiing. He and Dorothy would take road trips to Las Vegas to play Keno. He loved the time he was able to spend with his children playing poker and other games with them, clowning around and joking about everything. His sense of humor always kept everyone's spirits up. He was an all-around good guy!
On July 4, 1998, Mr. Lloyd Franklin Burkhardt passed away in Bakersfield. Funeral services were held on Wednes- day, July 8, 1998, at the Kern River Vallev Cemeterv in Wof- ford Heights. Pastor C.L. Semonious officiated, giving a wonderful service. The Honor Guard of the Veterans of For- eign Wars Post #7665 and the Ladies' Auxiliary proudly gave their lasting memorial tribute to Lloyd, their fallen comrade, for his service to his country in a time of war. Lloyd will be missed by his family and all his many friends.
Lloyd Burkhardt is survivied by his wife of 53 years, Dor- othy, his sons James Burkhardt of Santa Cruz, Calif., Richard Burkhardt -of Chelsea, Ok., Gary Burkhardt of Arab, Ala., and his daughters Doreen Allen of Mountain Mesa, and Diane Vradenburgh of Lake Isabella. Lloyd is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Archie Dee Hancock
Archie was born in Missouri and raised in Oklahoma. He passed away July 14, 1998, and was buried at Rose Hills on July 20, 1998.
In 1935, he met and married Helen Hix. They moved to Cali- fornia in 1936. Archie worked as a cook and later went to work for Phelps Dodge Copper Plant in Los Angeles where he made copper tubing for sub- marines during the war.
Archie and Helen were very close. They had three children - James Hancock, Betty Jean Breller and William Dee, de- ceased.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen; two children, seven grandchildren, 12 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Archie is also survived by his brothers and sisters and many friends. He was the third of 12 children.
Archie was a member of the CB'ers in Lake Isabella. He worked with the Kernville Chamber and the Kernville Recreation Complex Commit- tee. He judged the Rodeo Queen Contest. He loved horses. He trained and showed them in horse shows for many years before retiring to the Kern Valley in 1976. He loved the valley and fishing in the lake.
William J. Stark
Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at 8:30 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church in Wofford Heights for William J. Stark of Fairview. Officiating was Father Jim Kudilil.
Mr. Stark was born Novem- ber 28, 1923 in Youngstown, Ohio, and passed away July 22, 1998, at his home in Fair- view. He moved to the Kern
River Valley after retiring from the Glendale Police Depart- ment in 1977. He enjoyed fish- ing and being in the outdoors around the river.
He is survived by his son and his companion, Anthony and Carol; daughter and her husband, Kelly and Mark Mon- roe; granddaughter, Alicia, and grandson, Austin.

Nick D. Prodan
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights for Nick D. Prodan. Officiating will be Pastor Jon Rowe of the
Church of Christ in Lake Isa- bella and the VFW Post #7665. Nick was born Feb. 21, 1916 in Los Angeles and passed away at his home in Wofford Heights on July 21, 1998. He retired to the Kern River Valley in 1965 from the Carpenters Union Local #1506 in Santa Monica. He enjoyed classic cars, bowl- ing and looking out his picture window at his beloved Lake Isabella. He also enjoyed meet- ing and having conversation with his many friends in the valley and helping his brother Tony manage his tennis enter- prises.
Nick was preceded in death by his brother, George. He is survived by his son and wife, Mike and Carol, of Weldon; son and wife, Nick and Renee of Kernville; daughter, Kathy England, of Bodfish; and their mother, Anna, of Wofford Heights; his brother, Tony Prodan, of Irvine; and sister-in- law, Hilda Prodan, of Redondo Beach; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Nesta C. Turner
After a lengthy illness, Nesta passed away peacefully in her sleep at the home of her son in Bodfish. She was born April 15, 1903 and passed away July 19, 1998. At her request, cre- mation has taken place and no services were requested.
Nesta and her husband, Wm. D. Turner, came to the Kern Valley in 1951 and re- sided here 47 years.
She is survived by her son, Wm. A. Turner, and his wife, Claire, of Bodfish; her daugh-
ter, Mary (Johnnie) Threewit, of Paonia, Colo .; six grandchil- dren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchil- dren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, "Bill," and one great-grand- daughter, Dawn Cheree Elliott, of Paonia, Colo.
Nesta also leaves many friends in the valley. Her ashes will be placed beside her "Bill" at the Kern Valley Cemetery.
Nel F. Marlin
Nel F. Marlin passed away July 21, 1998, in Wofford Heights. Nel was born in Redondo Beach and lived in El Segundo until she moved to the Kern River Valley in 1982.
He is survived by her two daughters, Toni Klassen and Dee Thornberry; and one granddaughter, Rachel Thornberry. Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Peters Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1633, Kernville, Calif. 93238.

Cecil Everett Dale
Cecil Everett Dale of Lake Isabella passed away July 12, 1998, in a Pomona, Calif. hos- pital, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 29, 1914, in Raton, New Mexico. Prior to his retirement in 1974, he was a delivery driver for Hostess Cakes and had served the com- munities of Lake Isabella, Ridgecrest and Trona for 20 years.
He was an avid fisherman and loved camping and travel- ing. He married Alice May Car- penter on the 4th of July, 1936. He had been a property owner" in Lake Isabella since 1972 and a full-time resident since 1974.
Cecil is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice Dale, of Lake Isabella; sons, James C. Dale, of Upland, Calif .; and Lawrence W. Dale of Lake Isabella; and three grandchildren.
At Cecil's request, no ser- vices will be scheduled.

Barbara D. Farnsworth
Barbara joined her daughter and husband in heaven on July 26, 1998. She was born April 17, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her love for the lake and valley encouraged her to move here in 1986. She soon became in- volved in many clubs and or- ganizations, including the Wof- ford Heights Improvement Group, Senior Citizens Cen- ter, Friends of the Animals and The Rod and Gun Club.

She enjoyed crocheting and her beautiful view of the lake, but most of all helping others. She is survived by her grand- children, Mollie and Andy Win- chester, god-daughter Meagan Czubek, sister-in-law and hus- band Verna and Bob Ruff, and very dear friends Tom and Vickie Czubek.

Hazel R. Goodson
Hazel R. Goodson, 82, of Wofford Heights, passed away July 29, 1998, at a Claremont convalescent hospital. Mrs. Goodson was born October 4, 1915, in Sioux City, lowa, and settled in Granada Hills in 1941, moving to Claremont in 1956, and to Wofford Heights, in 1979. She was a member of the Methodist Faith. Surviving are husband, Kelly Sessions Goodson; daughters, Marilynn K. Klauss of Conover, North Carolina and Patricia A. Lynch of Montclair; 3 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 1 foster grandson and 12 great-grand- children.
Private services and inter- ment will be held.

Mildred Violet Weightman
A Mass for Christian Burial was held Monday August 3, 1998 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church for Mildred Violet Weightman. Officiating was Father Jim Kudilil.
Mrs. Weightman was born November 4, 1914 in Rock- ford, III and passed away July 29, 1998 in Mountain Mesa, Calif. She was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 30 years and a member of the Altar So- ciety at St. Jude Catholic Church.
She is survived by her hus- band of 64 years, Paul Weightman of Lake Isabella, son and daughter-in-law Ron and Maureen Weightman of Newhall, Calif., and daughter and son-in-law Jan and Bob Miller of Lake Havasu City, Az., 7 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren and 1 great- great-grandchild, and a sister Shirley Powell of Illinois.

Ruby Ann Ode, age 84, former Menominee resident, had been living at Rennas West. The former Ruby Shell was born July 16, 1914 in Kan- sas. She married Victor Frederick Ode in 1937. He pre- ceded her in death on Septem- ber 14, 1991. She was a mem- ber of Shephard of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isa- bella, and former resident of Wofford Heights, Calif.
She worked for the North American Rockwell Corp. for 15 years as a technical detailer, retiring in 1975. She is sur- vived by her son, Jerry Ode of Menominee, Michigan, a daughter Annette Louise Page of Redondo Beach, Calif., sis- ter Anna Heineken of Winches- ter, Kansas, 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday July 29, 1998 at 1 p.m. for Eugene Glenn Smith at Valley Mortuary Chapel. Of- ficiating was Pastor Bert Simp- son of Mt. View Southern Bap- tist Church. Interment was at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif. Eugene was a resident of the Kern Valley for 25 years and a member of the Moose Lodge and the Eagles. He enjoyed boating, water ski- ing and fishing.
He is survived by his daugh- ter-in-law Joyce Hazard of Palmdale,. granddaughter Wendi Morton of Palmdale, and great-grandchildren Ryan and Devon Morton of Palmdale.

Hazel Louise Kortcamp Hanson
Hazel Louise Kortcamp Hanson died August 1, 1998 at Tri-Cities Hospital in Vista, Calif. She was born March 12, 1911 in San Francisco and lived most of her life in California.
She came to Lake Isabella many years ago with her late husband, Herbert "Pete" Hanson, who loved to fish. Af- ter they both retired they bought a home here in 1987. Pete and Hazel were married for 46+ years and traveled extensively.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Sylvia Sands Wheeler of Baja Sur, Mexico, a granddaughter Agnes Kate Freeburn of Tucson, Ariz, a great-grandson Anthony Freeburn also of Tucson and a grandson John Laury Freeburn of Sacramento, Calif. She is also survived by her devoted brother, Richard Kortcamp and his family of Oceanside, Calif.
A memorial service is planned for Sunday, August 16, 1998, 1 p.m. at Highland Chapel, United Methodist Church in Lake Isabella.
