William "Bill" Harold Pettit
Age ... 79 years, 4 months, 14 days. William "Bill" Harold Pettit was born to his parents Raymond and Margaret Pettit on July 30, 1918, in the sleepy little midwest town of Albia, lowa. His mother was a native American Sioux Indian, and his father Raymond worked as arailroad engineer. A few years later, they moved to an even smaller town in Minnesota called Morton, home of his mother's Ogalala Sioux Indian tribe. Bill grew up riding the rails, and after seeing much of the midwestern states, at age 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country before and during World War II in the Pa- cific theater. After his muster- ing out period from the Navy, Bill then enlisted into the United States Army and continued to serve during World War II in the European theater. He sur- vived D-day, went into France and somehow managed to land himself in the Battle of the Bulge, all without any mortal wounds. He took a shrapnel wound into his shoulder and was awarded the Purple Heart. After extensive surgery, he continued to serve in the US Army, later fighting in the Ko- rean conflict. In 1957, he re- tired from active service and began working for Douglas Aircraft as a design engineer, and in his spare time he taught ice skating at the Ice Chalet in Paramount, California. After several years, he left Douglas and he heard the calling of the sea once again and became a Merchant Marine Engineer for the Marine Engineer's Benefi- cial Association (M. E. B. A.) In 1964, he met Carmella "Sue" Goff. After numerous - failed attempts at getting her to marry him, she finally agreed to go out with him after an entire year of his relentless devotion to the one question, "Will you please marry me?". In 1966, Bill and Sue went to
dinner at the "Plush Horse" restaurant in Redondo Beach, California. After dinner they were leaving and Bill fell into the bushes in front of the res- taurant. He stayed there for a while, thinking no one had seen him. Sue then pulled him from the bushes and told him, "Yes, I'll marry you. I have to, you need someone to take care of you!" On September 10, 1966, Bill and Sue were married by the Justice of the Peace in Carson City, Nevada. They bought a home in Wilmington, California and raised a family there. In 1976, when three of their four children had gradu- ated from Banning High School and gone out on their own, Bill and Sue sold their home and moved to the Kern River Val- ley area, then settling down in Bodfish.
In 1983, after 23 years of service with the Merchant Ma- rine, Bill retired after a near- fatal incident involving freon poisoning in Japan. In the fol- lowing 14 years, Bill and Sue had a wonderful life together, enjoying everything from trav- eling abroad to going to the high country and cutting fire- wood together. But in late 1997, Bill was diagnosed with a fast spreading, untreatable, termi- nal cancer. In the short time that followed, Bill, Sue and the entire family were able to say all the things that needed to be said. And after the shortest of any of the "fights" of his life, this one was lost. Bill passed away in the mid-afternoon of the 14th of December, 1997. We know that he has gone to
be with his Maker. Although ne is truly missed, he will never be forgotten. He touched all of our lives in more ways than could possibly be described in this lifetime. We love ya much'!
Bill is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carmella Sue Pettit, his daughter Crissie of Las Vegas, Nevada, his daughter Cheri and her husband Raul of Long Beach, California, his son Steven and his wife Rebecca of La Habra, California, his son Patrick of Bodfish and his son Michael of Bodfish. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Anton Hall of Las Vegas, Kim Culbertson of Long Beach, Lee Culbertson of the US Marine Corps, and Jessica and Eric of La Habra. Bill also has one surviving sister, Juanita Ashcraft and her husband Don, of Hanford, California, also numerous nieces and neph- ews. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Robert.
Services arranged by the Lake Isabella Funeral Home. We would like to share a poem about our father ... My Father's Hands My Father's hands touched my soul, My Father's hands so strong and bold,
He would take me in his hands so tight, And stay with me throughout the night, An unspoken word was within this man, A silent strength was his plan, Gone from me this special man, But I'll never forget My Father's hands.

Thelma Ann "Peggy" Clemens Thelma Ann "Peggy" Clemens was born in Alney, Texas, to her parents, Travis and Valerie Kelley. In 1949, Peggy, her parents, and her family moved to Modesto, Cali- fornia. They resided there for three years and then headed south to Compton, California, where the family put down long- term ties to the community. There Peggy's parents raised their family and that's where she truly became a family ori- ented individual. She learned to love her family fiercely and built a strong emotional base that would carry her through all of the trials and tribulation of her life.
In 1991, Peggy moved to the Kern Valley area, residing in Lake Isabella. There she found a place to use her tal- ents at gardening, planting and yardwork. She loved planting trees and working hard to make her home into her castle. Even greater than her love of the outdoors was her love for ani- mals. She held an especially big place in her heart for dogs. She would pick up every stray that would walk down the road. The greatest love of all, though, was the love of her children and grandchildren. As she was loved, she loved them fiercely. That fierce love, however, was not enough to keep her here with us. She heard the calling of the Lord and she went home.
