1

The daughter of Horace and Mae Deming, she was born on July 30, 1913, in San Diego. Being the only daughter she was beloved by her parents and her brothers.

The family moved often in her early years, living in Washington for a short time and then return- ing to California. The family lived in Hanford where her father owned a restaurant. She enjoyed a recent trip to Hanford with the Historical Society and told sto- ries of going to China Town to use the few pennies she and her younger brother might have to purchase candy. She remem- bered living on Green Street and that the house had a large plot of Shasta Daisies in the yard.

The family eventually moved to West Hollywood where she graduated from Fairfax High School. She worked for a dress- maker and in 1934 she married Bill Banta. They owned a moving and storage business for many years, doing a great deal of work for decorators and galleries. Most of these years her home became the location for the family gather- ings. Many a happy Thanksgiv- ing and Christmas meal were celebrated there.

For many years vacations and week-end trips were spent in Kernville. When the town of "New" Kernville was being sub-

divided they purchased property on Circle Park and built a build- ing which they intended to rent. Ruth worked as a waitress and Bill worked for the County Roads Department for a while and then for James Store. At that time James Store carried dry goods. Clint James wanted out of the dry goods business so he sold them his dry goods stock. They added to that stock and in 1962 opened the Westerner, the first specialty shop in the valley. Bill and Ruth operated the West- erner until 1974 when the store . was purchased by their daugh- ter and son-in-law, Pat and Don - ยก Vehlewald.

The Banta's enjoyed their re- tirement years, spending the summer at their property in Horse Meadows and traveling in their trailer in the winter months. Bill passed away in December of 1992.

Ruth joined Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in 1993. She had been active in church and made many wonderful friends. Living with Pat and Don

she has said these were some of the happiest years of her life.

The light of her life was her great-grandson, Chris. She and Pat made several happy trips to the coast with Chris. These are memories Chris will always have of a dear sweet lady who loved him very much. His little brothers will miss the joy of knowing her.
