John Sabath
Graveside services were held Thursday, October 19, 1995, at the Kern River Valley Cemetery for John Sabath. Officiating was Pastor Deryl Lackey of Mt. View Southern Baptist Church in Lake Isabella.
Mr. Sabath was bom on March 1, 1915 in Benld, Illinois and passed away on October 14,
1995, in Wofford. Heights. A resident of the Kern River Valley for 16 years, he was retired from the Coast Guard.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ann in 1993. He is sur- vived by his son and daughter- in-law, Richard and Penny Sabath of Red Bluff, Califomia;
son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Elaine Sabath of El Centro, California; two sisters Marian Hemple of Chicago and Ann Komlose of lowa; five grand- children and four great-grand- children.

Helen Lucille Moore
Memorial services were held in the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church for Helen Lucille Moore, age 85, of Mt. Mesa, on Saturday, October 28, 1995, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Floyd Castillo officiating. Order of the Eastern Star services were also conducted.
Lucille was bom on February 16, 1910 in Rector, Arkansas, and passed away on October 26, 1995, in a Bakersfield hos- pital. Lucille took nurses training in Memphis, Tennessee and married Robert H. Moore on September 22, 1934 in Kennett, Missouri. They lived in Ridgecrest for 23 years before moving to Mt. Mesa in 1969.
She was a long-time member of the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church and an active member of the Eastern Star where she worked since 1958 with the Cancer Dressing Station at the Masonic Lodge. Many Kem Valley residents benefited from those dressings and any that weren't used in the valley were sent to the Cancer Society in Bakersfield. Lucille ran a day care center in her home at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station for 18 years.
Lucille is survived by her husband, Bob Moore, to whom she was married for 61 years; her sister, Etola Shaw of La Mirada; her brother, Delbert
Harber, of silver City, New Mexico; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to either the Cancer Dressing Station in care of the Kern Valley Masonic Lodge or to the memorial fund of the Highland Chapel United Methodist Church.

Ernest Klasen
Private services were held for Ernest Klasen, age 65, who en- tered into rest at his home in Weldon early in the morning, Saturday, September 21, 1995, with his wife and two of his sons by his side.
Ernest Klasen was bom to Ernest and Senta Klasen on March 30, 1930, in Los Angeles, California. He spent his early years in Los Angeles and re- ceived his schooling in Santa Monica and Los Angeles. Ernest had various employers in the motion picture industry as a prop maker. He served his country in World War II in the Navy as a ship's cook.
He particularly liked anything to do with water. Fishing was
one of his favorite pastimes. He was also a member of the Drag Boat Association. He came and made his home in the lake area in 1994.
Mr. Klasen is survived by his wife Joan of Weldon; son Bill Moore of Rockford, Illinois; son Kirt Moore of Lompoc, California; son Steven Elliott of Rialto, California; daughter Patty Jo DeLong of Durham, Califomia; daughters Barbara Watkins and Betsy Booth, both of Rosamond, California; daughter Susan Quinland of Westlake, Califomia. Also surviving him are 14 grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Arthur Freier
Arthur Freier, age 74, resident of Wofford Heights, died on Wednesday, November 1, 1995. He was hit by a motor vehicle while assisting as a Citizen Pa- trol Volunteer. He was born in Box Elder, Montana, on July 4, 1921, to John and Mathilda Freier. He attended Box Elder schools and graduated from Northern Montana College in Havre, Montana. He married Irene Fisher of Butte, Montana, in 1948 and moved to Los An- geles, California. He taught mathematics in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 30 years and retired as Math Supervisor in 1981. Irene died in 1988. In 1991, he married Lois Whitman of Van Nuys, California, and the two retired to Wofford Heights.
He is survived by four children: Elaine Cox of Anaheim, Califor- nia; Gary Freier of Wofford Heights, California; Martin Freier of Agua Dulce, California; and Stacy DiRezze of Gardena, California; five grandchildren: Patricia Lynn, Laura Anne, Gre- gory Allen, Ruben Arthur, and Daniel James; two stepchildren: Carl Whitman of Simi Valley, California, and Sarah Stephenson of Marin County, Califomia. Arthur is also survived by four brothers: Herbert Freier, Edwin Freier, Donald Freier and Adolph Freier, all of Montana; and one sister Anna Shelsted of New Mexico. He is preceded in death by brothers John, Ruben and Otto Freier.
His life was dedicated to community service to benefit the well-being of others. His family, faith and friends were foremost in his life. He was an active member in many organizations including: Citizen Patrol Unit of Kern County, Wofford Heights Improvement Group, Elks Lodge, VFW, Germans from Russia Organization, and the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
Services were held at Shep- herd of the Hills Lutheran Church. in Lake Isabella, on Sunday, November 5, 1995, at 2 p.m. He will be buried at the Kem River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights .· A memorial fund has been established by the Kern County Sheriff Department.

Gladys Banks
Funeral services for Gladys Banks, age 75, were held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 1995 at Miller-Jones Mortuary Chapel in Hemet, Califomia. Officiating was Tom Hilterman. Burial followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in North Holly- wood, California. She died of pneumonia on Saturday, Octo- ber 21, 1995, at her home in San Jacinto, California.
Mrs. Banks, who was bom on August 7, 1920, in Shellknow, Missouri, lived in San Jacinto for 10 years. She lived in Southlake, Califomia, at least 10 years prior to 1985, and had many friends here in the valley. She was a secretary for McDonnell-Douglas for 20 years. She was a member of the Culver City Baptist Church.
Gladys is survived by two -- sons, Thomas L. of Huntington Beach and David L. of Los An- geles; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five broth- ers, Floyd Kimball of Hemet; Ireland Kimball of Kansas City, Missouri; Roland Kimball of Springfield, Missouri; Larry Kimball of Independence, Mis- souri; and Claye Kimball of St. Ann, Missouri; two sisters, Mary Sue Grant of Kansas City, Missouri, and Wilma Stringer of Elephant Butte, New Mexico; six nieces and seven nephews.
Jack Bess
Private services were held for Jack Bess, age 78, who passed away early on Thursday moming, November 2, 1995, at the Kem Valley Hospital.
Jack was born in Eufaula, Oklahoma, to William and Emma Bess on May 28, 1917. He re- ceived his education in Eufaula and remained there until 1936 at which time he came to Bakers- field and ran a cotton gin until 1955. Jack then opened Von Bess Kennels in 1955 and op- erated it until his retirement in 1979. For the next 15 years, he and his wife traveled back and forth between Bakersfield and Oklahoma enjoying his retire- ment. For the past few years they lived in the lake area.
He served his country from 1940 to 1945 as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army where he received several decorations and cita- tions. Among them was the Purple Heart, American Defense Service Ribbon, Eame Service Ribbon and Four Bronze Service Stars. He was wounded during the Eame Theater.
Jack is survived by his wife Mary of Onyx; sons Jack Bess Jr. and Stanley Bess, both of Bakersfield; one daughter Sherry Valadez of Los Angeles; sisters Jewel Godfrey of Oklahoma and Mary Jagow of Bakersfield; brothers Fred Bess of Bakers- field, George Bess of Oklahoma and Claude Bess of Weldon; seven grandchildren adn five great-grandchildren.
He loved to plant and grow plants as a hobby. Jack also loved to fish. Another of his fa- vorite pastimes was to tease whoever he loved and held close to his heart. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Lupe Obregon
Private arrangements were made for Lupe Obregon of Lake Isabella. Mr. Obregon.was bom. August 30, 1933 in San Antonio, Texas, and passed away on October 30, 1995, in Mt. Mesa. Mr. Obregon has been a resident of the Kern River Valley since moving here from Sunland in 1980.
He was in the Air Force during the Korean War. He is a member of the Eagles Aerie #3156 and the Moose #498 and the Ameri- can Legion. He played in all the pool tournaments around the valley.
Lupe is survived by his wife of two years Connie of Lake Isa- bella; his daughters Melv Costa · of Aqua Dulce, Lupe Bright of - Canyon Country; stepdaughter Mary Aguilar of Corona; two brothers Santiago Obregon and Joe Obregon, both of Texas; sister Lena Cruz of Texas and nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services were held Friday, November 3, 1995, at 1 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge in Mt. Mesa.

Ethel Maude Read
Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 2, 1995, at 1 p.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Ethel Maude Read. Officiating was Ken Bushling. Interment followed at Kern River Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. Read was born Decem- ber 5, 1919 in Alpena, Arkansas, and passed away on October 30, 1995, in Bakersfield, Cali- fornia. She has been a resident of the Kern River Valley for 15 years after moving here from Oceanside.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Ken Bushling of Lake Isa- bella; sisters Dena DeCapua of Oceanside; Vonda Tate and Alma Hulsey, both of Arkansas; brother Uri Widner of Arkansas; four grandchildren: Scott Haidze, Karla Cross, Kenny Bushling and Cindy Kuhar; and eight great- grandchildren.
Margaret C. Boyd
Services were held on No- vember 3, 1995, at Valley Mor- tuary for Margaret C. Boyd, age 82. Interment followed at Kern Valley Cemetery. She was bom on September 12, 1913 in Sinks Grove, West Virginia. She passed away at her place of
residence on October 28, 1995. Margaret was a resident of Lake Isabella for 20 years. She was a member of Eastern Star. She is survived by her son Bill Boyd of Burbank, Califomia; two grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.

Shaun William Liske
Services were held for Shaun Liske, age 16, on Tuesday, No- vember 14, 1995, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Kernville, with Pastor John Car- penter officiating. Interment fol- lowed at Kern River Valley Cemetery. Shaun was born in Lancaster, California, on Janu- ary 10, 1979. Shaun passed away on November 7, 1995, in Weldon. He was truly an ex- ceptional individual in keeping with family tradition. He was loved by his peers and respected by the entire community.
Shaun was an honored ath- lete, a tournament fishermen, and an outstanding young man. As a junior at Kern Valley High School, he lettered in cross country, track and basketball.
He is survived by his parents Mike and Renea Liske; two brothers Erik and Brian Liske of Weldon; grandparents Maurice and Shirley Corbisier of Lancaster; grandmother Betty Climer of Rosamond, California; and grandfather Raymond Climer, also of Rosamond. Other survivors include his aunts and uncles, Rod and April of Colo- rado; Debbie Liske of Seattle, Washington; Kim and Jeff Garcia and Stuart Noel, all of Lancaster, California; Mike and Barbara Noel of Redwood City, California; Gary and Jeanne Gomez of Palmdale, Califomia; Vicki and John Hjelmstrom of Castaic, California; great uncle Mervin Landerman of Weldon. He is also survived by numerous cousins, fellow classmates and friends.
A trust has been established at ValliWide Bank, at 6100 Lake Isabella Blvd. in Lake Isabella, CA 93240, to help the Liske family at this time of great loss.
Shaun will be greatly missed by his family and all of his friends here in the valley.

Benton Ernest Webb
Private services were held for Benton Webb, age 78, who en- tered into rest in Bakersfield on November 7, 1995.
He was born in Redlands, California. Benton received his schooling in Redlands and Stockton, California. He lived in the Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica area from 1935 to 1984, when he moved to the lake area.
His work was that of construc- tion in the building trade. It was like a hobby to him. Even at 72, he was helping put a roof on his grandson's house and he was in control of those who were work- ing with him. One highlight of his life was when he got stuck in his attic in Bodfish and the fire de- partment had to come and get him. He was often reminded of this by his family.
Benton is survived by his wife Minnie Mae Webb; daughters Romonia Chapin of Dalesville, Indiana; Janet Beaman of Las Vegas, Nevada; Carol Coan of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Su- san Lambert of Malibu, Califor- nia; brother Ray Webb of Colo- rado Springs, Colorado; sisters Marion Schimpf of Homeland, California; and Eathel Shea of Palmdale, California; 12 grand- children and 11 great-grandchil- dren. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Birdie Blair Malahni
Birdie Blair Malahni, age 68, of Kernville, Califomia, died on Friday, November 3, 1995, in Kern Valley Hospital, in Mt. Mesa.
She was born in San Pedro, California, on June 22, 1927, the daughter of Bertha and John Blair. She married Mike (Marco P.) Malahni in 1944 in South Dakota.
Birdie attended the Los An- geles Police Academy and served as a L.A. police officer from 1952 to 1957. She was recognized as the first female toll bridge collector on the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Birdie also worked as a real estate agent.
Mike retired from his position as a captain for the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1974. Shortly thereafter both Birdie and Mike moved to Kernville. They built a house and she lived in it for over 21 years. Birdie enjoyed fishing, baking, dominos and cribbage.
Mike preceded her in death in 1990. she is survived by her three daughters, Jonni Ann Bruno of Camarillo, Califomia; Donna M. Jackson of Kernville; Jean Malahni of Los Gatos, California; and seven grandchil- dren.
An intimate gathering was held on Sunday, November 5, 1995, in Kernville. She was well re- spected and admired by family and friends. Her humor and generosity will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Los Angeles Firemen's Widows and Orphans Fund or the Los Angeles Police Department's Museum Fund.
Arthur Esponda
Services were held on Friday, November 10, 1995 at 10 a.m. at the Lake Isabella Funeral Home's Rose Chapel for Arthur Esponda. - Officiating was Pastor John Carpenter, of the United Meth- odist Church of Kernville. Arthur passed away in Bakersfield on November 7, 1995, at the age of 80. He was born in Poso Flat, California, a small area north of Glenville, California.
>Arthur, who was nicknamed "Chipmunk" has lived in this area all of his life. He was a Native American Indian. He became a cowboy at the age of 11 and worked at many of the ranches in the Weldon area. Some of the ranches where he worked were the A Brown Ranch, Rudnick Range, Peterson Ranch, Prince Range and the Kissack Ranch. He loved to fish and hunt in his spare time. Arthur was a member of the Eagles and the Moose.
He is survived by his son Claude Esponda of Kernville; brother Johnny Esponda of Bakersfield; sisters Luty Peterson of Kernville and Marcelene Ames of Pico Rivera; and two grand- children.
Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.
Clarence D. (Clem) Loy
Clarence D. (Clem) Loy, age 77, of Weldon, passed away on November 6, 1995, at San Joaquin Community Hospital. He was born in Los Angeles, Cali- fornia, on October 30, 1918, and married Barbara on August 10, 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Clem retired from Pacific Telephone Company after 33 years, starting his career as a lineman and retiring as a com- munications engineer. He and Barbara moved to Lake Isabella in 1975 where they have enjoyed the last 20 years together.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara; daughters and husbands Susan Loy and Allan Love; Mary Ellen Loy and Joe Stearns; daughter Eileen Zurek and partner Susan McAllister; grandchildren Lisa and Mark Morse, Michael Frick, Melanie and Brian Zurek, and Michael and Mark McAllister; cherished great-grandson Quinn Morse and special nephew David Smith; brother J. Milton Loy and sister Bessie Rogers.
According to Clem's wishes, no services will be held.

Calvin C. Lembke
Calvin C. Lembke, age 71, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on November 13, 1995, at Kern Valley Hospital in Mt. Mesa, Califomia. Calvin was born to George and Ethel Lembke at the farm home on November 4, 1924, in Griswold, lowa. He married Shirley James of Oakland; lowa, on January 7, 1950. They lived in Griswold, lowa, and moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he started his career as a carpenter in the Omaha area. They then moved to Califomia in 1968, where he continued carpentry and drywall, until he retired after some 30 years.
Services were held on Tues- day, November 21, 1995, at the Rose Chapel of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.
Survivors, other than his wife - Shirley of Bodfish, are their daughter, Roxanne Louise and their son-in-law Robert G. Ward of California City, California; one namesake grandson, Mick Calvin Doiel who resides in Lake Los Angeles, Califomia. Other survivors include brothers, Virgil Lembke, and wife Helen of Cumberland, lowa; Doyle Lembke and his wife Barbara of Carson, lowa; sisters Charlotte and her husband Paul Woods of Emerson, lowa; Dorothy and her husband Viril Liddell of Harland, lowa and Verda Clayton of Pico Rivera, California; sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and Ken- neth Elswick of Lincoln, Ne- braska; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Ethie; three brothers, Orlan, Merle and Dwight Lembke; two sisters, Delphia (Dolly) Hughes and Velda Williams.
Calvin enjoyed traveling, but mostly, he loved to work out- doors, working with his woodcraft in and around the home. He was a very loving husband and father.
Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonewell family of Lake Isabella Funeral Home.
LeRoy Chaffin
Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather pased away on November 1, 1995, in Mt. Mesa, California. Services were held on November 7, 1995, at Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.
LeRoy was born on October 3, 1919, in Longmont, Colorado. In January 1990, he lost his loving wife of 49 years, Lucille Chaffin. They moved to Weldon 15 years ago, after residing in Downey, Califomia, for 35 years.
He was a member of the Dam Dancers, the Eagles and the Moose Lodge. He loved the outdoors, camping, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Della Chaffin of Paramount, California; Larry and Louise Chaffin of Hacienda Heights, California; daughters and son- in-law Lynn Streetz of Weldon; and Cindy and Alan Rowles of Weldon; four grandchildren Michael Chaffin of Paramount, California; Shannon Rowles of Weldon; David Chaffin of Haci- enda Heights, California; and Jason Rowles of Weldon; one great-grandson Mikey Chaffin of Paramount, California; brothers Elwood Chaffin of La Habra, California; Warren Chaffin of La Mirada, California; brother-in-law George DeWald
of Weldon; and his dear friend Delores Tillman of Onyx.
The pall bearers in Inglewood were Michael Chaffin, David Chaffin, Jason Rowles, Bob Thompson, Eddie Sanchez and Jim Gordon.
There will also be a memorial service held for LeRoy at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3156 in Mt. Mesa on Friday, November 24, 1995, at 11:00 a.m.
He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Anthony Edward Coleman
A new star glimmers in the heavens following the passing of Anthony Edward Coleman, age 23, on November 11, 1995, in Glendale, California.
Bom in Fontana, California, Tony brought joy to his mother's life on August 1, 1972. By junior high, computing had caught his imagination and he was writing and selling games to his friends. Following high school, he took up the challenge of applying his computer knowledge to the busi- ness world where he eventually became the On-Line Networking Systems Administrator for PBS MathLine for teachers, PBS Ex- press, and KCET on-line at KCET-TV, Los Angeles. With a career but a few years old, he sat on the threshold of unlimited success when his life was so unexpectedly ended by a motor- cycle accident.
Smart, funny and charismatic, Tony immediately won the hearts of those who met him. He loved life, country music, dancing, people and he would combine "them as often as possible. His quick smile will live forever in the hearts of his mother and father Teri and Bill Vellutini of Bakers- field; the sparkle of his blue eyes are forever captured in the memories of his grandparents, Emily and Don Diggles of Bod- fish and Leo and Jeanne Gorman of El Centro; his infectious laugh- ter will echo in the ears of his. sisters, Tina Coleman of New- port Beach and Almitra Vellutini of Costa Mesa; his passionate loving heart reached forever to his friend Erika Epes of Glendale; and, his gentle nature will forever caress and touch all his many friends and family.
A celebration of the joy that was his life was shared by family and friends at his Grandmother Diggles house in Bodfish on Saturday, November 18, 1995.

Selma Opal Allemann
Funeral services for Selma Opal Allemann, age 73, of Wof- ford Heights, were held on Tuesday, November 14, 1995, at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella with Dr. Marvin D. Moon officiating. Burial followed in the Kern River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights. A '20-year valley resident, Selma was born on April 3, 1922 in Hermann, Missouri, to Minnie and Edwin Allemann.
Selma was a member of the Kern Valley Hospital Auxiliary where she had approximately 4,000 hours of volunteer work and had hoped to donate up to 5,000 hours. She also volun- teered at the Kern River Valley Historical Society in the Gift Shop. She never missed a dance at the Senior Center and was an active member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and par- ticipated in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Armin and Raymond, and by her sister, Florence. Survivors include her brothers Elmer and Roy Allemann, both of Missouri; her sisters, Betty Baer of Missouri, Evelyn Davis of Anaheim and Viola Vehlewald of Wofford Heights; her godchild, Julia Dumke of Lancaster; 15 nephews and nieces and many great- nephews and great-nieces and a great-great-nephew, Chris Vehlewald, who always made Selma smile by calling her "Grandma Selma."
Memorial donations may be made to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

Dorothy Dee Pate
Dorothy passed away on November 13, 1995, at the age
of 70. Private service and inurnment. Burial at Kern River Valley Cemetery.
She grew up in New Mexico. She worked for her father in his small restaurant as a quick fry cook.
Dorothy was a seamstress and loved to make clothes for the dolls she collected. She also loved to play cards, and could have a few choice words for those who didn't concentrate on the game.
She was loved and will be missed by her family. Two daughters, Georgia Barrentine and Frankie Biehahn; her grandson Kelley Pate whom she raised; four other grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.
Betty Weber
Betty Weber passed away on November 13, 1995. She is survived by her sons Ron and Dick Weber, eight grandchil- dren, four great-grandchildren, a brother and three sisters. A memorial service was held Fri- day, November 17, 1995, at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel in Culver City, California.

Thelma Strobridge, age 75, passed away in the afternoon of Monday, November 13, 1995, in Mt. Mesa, California. Services were held on Friday, November 17, 1995, at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Brian Palston, of the Four Square Family Life Center officiating. There was also a burial service at Green Hills Memorial Park in San Pedro, California, at 11:00
