Ollie E. King


Memorial services for Ollie E. King, age 70, of Bodfish were held on Sunday, February 26, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. at the V.F.W. Post #7665 in Lake Isabella. A 10-year Kern River Valley resi- dent, Mrs. King was bom Sep- tember 20, 1924 in Etowah County, Alabama and died at her home on February 18, 1995.


She was a member of the La- dies Auxiliary of the V.F.W., the Ladies of the Moose and a life member of Ward Memorial Pres- byterian Chapel in Gasden, Ala- bama.


Survivors include her husband Harold King of Bodfish; her children's father and stepmother, Walter and Irma Hales of Gasden, Alabama; a son David Hales of Lake Isabella; daughter Annie R. Cameron of Bakersfield; daugh- ter Linda K. Davis of Biloxi, Mis- sissippi; daughter Rebecca Lembke of Bodfish; daughter Susan Westburg of Kemville; and a stepdaughter Carol Fox of St. Paul, Minnesota. She is also sur- vived by her sisters Bobbie Brooks and Mary Taylor, both of Madi- son, Indiana; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

James Franklin Dick


Graveside Funeral Services were held at the Kem River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights on Thursday, February 23, 1995, at 2:00 p.m. for James F. Dick. Rev- erend David Snow, Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isa- bella officiated. Visitation was held on Wednesday from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.


James was bom January 27, 1934 in Christopher, Illinois, and passed away in Mt. Mesa on Monday evening, February 20, 1995.


At the age of eight, he moved to Califomia settling in the Whittier area. In 1968 he came to Lake Isabella. He has been employed for the past 15 years by Ladd Ready Mix.


James was preceded in death by his parents Hon Dick and Vir- ginia Dick in 1994. He is survived by two sisters and by special dear friends LeRoy and Donna Ladd of Lake Isabella and by many dear friends who will greatly miss him.


The services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.

The son of Frank and Shirley Stubbs, Randel was bom on De- cember 20, 1955 and passed away on February 20, 1995.


He leaves behind his sisters Trudy Lee Stubbs and Teena Marie Stubbs; his ex-wife Leslie Stubbs; and his three children, Joel Evan Stubbs, Kyle Stubbs and Megan Garner.


He will be missed greatly.

Charles Elmer Willyard


Graveside services were held Monday, February 27, 1995, at 2:00 p.m. at the Kem River Valley Cemetery for Charles Elmer Willyard of Onyx. Officiating was Pastor John Carpenter of the Weldon Methodist Church.


Mr. Willyard was born August 2, 1933, in Topeka, Kansas and passed away on February 22, 1995, in Barstow, California. He was a resident of Onyx since retir- ing from the Postal Service in Simi Valley in 1984. He was known


for his woodworking and he was a". 18, 1995, just ten days after his good father to his children.


He is survived by his sons Charles Willyard, Jr. and David Willyard of Barstow, California; daughter Diana Lee Kent of An- chorage, Alaska; three grandchil- dren: Charles Willyard III, Amber Fox and Brandy Kent; two great- grandchildren: Ashley Fox and Hailey Mitchell; his brother Don Burse of Nebraska. He will be missed by all.

Doc DeWayne Jones


ยท Memorial services were held on Friday, February 24, 1995 at 10 a.m. at Mt. View Southem Bap- tist Church in Lake Isabella for Doc DeWayne Jones. Officiating was Pastor Deryl Lackey.


Doc DeWayne Jones was bom into this world on February 8, 1946 in the state of Oklahoma. He spent his early childhood in our Kem River Valley. Although he moved away for a period of time, he came back to this area in 1973. During


the majority of his life (33 years), he worked in construction as an Operating Engineer Local #501 running heavy equipment and welding. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Union and a member of this church family.


He was an avid collector of knives and lived to hunt with hounds. He was also active in the Senior Center doing whateverwas needed from cooking to dish- washing.


Doc was taken from this life to be in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February


49th birthday. He will be greatly missed by all those who were privileged to know and love him.


He is survived by his mother Bessie, who resides in Oklahoma; three sisters Lahoma, Kay and Francina, also residing in Okla- homa; his daughter Janet and son- in-law Manuel Jimenez, of Lake Isabella; daughter Caryl, also of Lake Isabella; and four grandchil- dren Justin Miller, Jesse, Cody and Elizabeth Jimenez.

Rose Marie Faygel Wallace


Private family services and cremation were held in Arcata, California, for Rose Marie Faygel Wallace, age 80. She passed away at the Mad River Hospital in Arcata on February 10, 1995. She was born on May 24, 1914, in Red Lodge, Montana.


Mrs. Wallace was residing in Santa Rosa, California, with her daughter Jean Lewis. She had lived in the Wofford Heights area for 20 years.


She was preceded in death by her husband Lorence E. Wallace and her parents Mark Faygel and Mary Homan Faygel. Survivors include her daughter Ellen lone Reid of Eureka, California; daughter Margaret Rose Sims of San Diego, Califomia; daughter Jean Marie Lewis of Santa Rosa, Califomia; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also sur- viving Mrs. Wallace are her sis- ters Mary Bohannon of Colum- bus, Montana, and Anne Boffert of Redding, Califomia.

Albert Edward Smith


Albert E. Smith passed away at his home Saturday, February 25, 1995. He was bom February 2, 1915 in New York City, New York, and came to California as a child and went to school in Bakersfield. He came to live in Kem Valley over 30 years ago.


He is survived by his wife of 50 years Irene; brother-in-law Orville Welcher; nephews Kent Maxwell and wife Judy and their three sons and daughter who were very special to Al, Nona, Scott, Warren and Guy; nephew Bob Smith and wife Johnnie; niece Judy Hightower and husband Cliff; niece Chris Faircloth and husband Dave. A much loved grandson Glen Hough and wife Wanda and children of Orlando, Florida and many great nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren and very special friends Liz, Tim, Marilyn and Ken. There will be no services as requested by the deceased.

Gilbert G. DiSanto


Gilbert G. DiSanto, a resident of Lake Isabella, passed away on February 18, 1995 at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.


He is survived by his two sons Gilbert J. and Ronald D. DiSanto and his granddaughter Lisa DiSanto. He is also survived by his sisters Rose Nolan, Mary Gillespie, Josephine Miller and his brother Frank DiSanto.


A memorial service was held on March 4, 1994 at 10 p.m. at the Weldon United Methodist Church.


Virginia Grace Raymond


Private arrangements were made for Virginia Grace Raymond who passed away February 28, 1995 in Bakersfield, Califomia. She was bom November 12, 1908 in Escanaba, Michigan and has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for 17 years. Virginia is a retired Army Nurse who served during WWII. She belonged to the VFW Post #7665 and the Eagles Lodge, also the Lockheed Rock and Miners Society. She was an avid rock hound and friend of flora and fauna.


She is survived by her sister Janet St. John of Wofford Heights; sister Margaret and husband Chris Henkel of Chatsworth; nephew Jan W. Raymond of Weldon; nephew Mark and wife Jan St.


John of Greedly, Colorado; niece Patricia and husband Larry Argabright of Canoga Park, Cali- fornia.


Interment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. Donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Frank Norwood Gates


Private arrangements were made for Frank Norwood Gates, who passed away February 26, 1995 in Mt. Mesa, Califomia. Frank was bom July 17, 1907 in Ventura County, California and has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for the past 16 years. He loved fishing and hunting. He was well known in the valley and he and his tall tales will be missed by all his family and friends.


He is survived by his wife of 59 years Edna; daughter Bonnie Amold of Simi Valley; daughter Betty Mylres of Lincoln, Califomia; son Kenneth Gates of Goldfield, Nevada; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Etta May Chapman


Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 28, 1995, at 11 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Etta May Chapman. Officiating was Pastor Deryl Lackey of Mt. View Southem Baptist Church. Mrs. Chapman was bom Sep- tember 2, 1898 in Worthington, Minnesota, and passed away February 24, 1995 in Mt. Mesa, Califomia. She was 96 years of age. She has been a resident of the Kem River Valley for 25 years and a member of the 55+ Club and the Grandmothers Club.


She is survived by her daugh- ter Gene Ackerman of Lake Isa- bella and her son Bud Chapman of Huntington Beach, California; grandchildren Brad and Judy Armstrong of Lake Isabella and Brent Chapman of Huntington Beach, Califomia; great-grand- children Chris, Stephanie and Brandon Armstrong of Lake Isa- bella; George Ackerman of Port- land, Oregon; and Alan Ackerman of Vancover, B.C .; great-great- grandchild Alexander Ackerman of Vancover, B.C. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Aaron Allen Horn


Aaron Allen Hom, age 22 years, passed away in Oak View, Cali- fomia, on Sunday, February 26, 1995, after a long and brave struggle with drug addiction and alcoholism. He was a special spirit, an avid outdoorsman and back- packer, pioneering many trails in the Sespe Mountains and in the Sequoia National Forest.


Aaron was bom ony 19, 1972, and attended schools in Oxnard, Califomia, where he was active in Scouting. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. Aaron was an accomplished musician with vari- ous Celtic flutes and homs. He was a student of his Celtic Heritage andcompiled various manuscripts recording the history of the Clans. His poetry and inspirational writ- ings are a monument to his deep love of life. Always ready with a joke and a smile, Aaron was a true friend of the world and his happy, loving spirit was an uplift- ing and guiding beacon to all that knew him.


He is survived by his parents, Boyd and Pat, his brothers Hyrum and Chuck and his sister, Anna, all of the Kem River Valley. Also great-grandmother Clytie Allen; grandparents Jerry and Jean Obert of Southlake; numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.


Funeral services were held at


Valley Mortuary in Lake Isabella at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7th, with Pastor Mary True of the Unity Church of Petaluma. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Kem River Valley Alano Club.

Arthur Andrew Litke


Arthur Litke was bom on July 27, 1922 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He moved at the age of two to Detroit, Michigan, where he grew up and worked during World War Il for the Ford Motor Company. He was an aircraft mechanic at the Ford Company where he helped in the building of the B-17 bombers. After his stay at the Ford Company he worked for Revere Copper and Brass Com- pany for 35 years in Detroit.


Arthur moved to Weldon from Detroit in 1987 where he remained until his death on March 8, 1995 at the age of 72.


He is survived by his wife Vir- ginia of Weldon; daughter and son-in-law Carol and Bob En- gland; granddaughter Heather England and his grandson Chris- topher England. Also surviving him are a great many friends and neighbors who will greatly miss him


He will also be missed by the Moose Club of which he was a lifetime member.


Services are entrusted to the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.


Ernest Fred Everett


Emest Everett was bom on October 9, 1900, In Gatesville, Texas. He moved to Califomia in 1930 where he lived in the Los Angeles and Banning area. Emest worked for 40 years for the Pacific Bell Telephone Company as an


Electrical Engineer. He was in the Navy during the latter part of WWI. He moved to Wofford Heights in 1976.


His hobby and the joy of his life was breeding and raising race horses. He raced his horses at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park and Del Mar race tracks. His most popular horse was Clown Prince.


Emest passed away at his home in Wofford Heights on March 9, 1995, at the age of 94.


He is survived by his wife Hallie and daughter Evelyn Parke of Wofford Heights; a son Emest Fred Jr .; and many friends who will greatly miss him.


Services were entrusted to the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.

James R. "J.R." Scott


Funeral services were held on Friday, March 17, 1995, at 2:00 p.m. in the Valley Mortuary Chapel for James R. "J.R." Scott, 37, of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Pastor John Carpenter of the Kernville United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Calvary Cemetery in Petaluma, Califomia.


J.R. is survived by his father, James E. Scott of Wofford Heights; a brother John F. Scott of Bakersfield; sister Michelle McElfresh of Clovis; sister Anne Bunnell of Petaluma.

Martha Wokal


Martha Wokal, age 73, of Onyx passed away Tuesday, March 14, 1995, in Bakersfield after a brief illness. She was bom in Sterling, Colorado, but lived almost all her life in California. She had lived in the Kem River Valley for over 20 years, had been the office man- ager for Dr. Ann Elconin, and was currently secretary for the South Fork Mosquito Abatement District. She was also active in the South Fork Women's Club. Because she was always ready to help anyone who needed her special talents or


her friendship, she will be missed by her family and friends.


She is survived by her husband, Gene, to whom she had been married 54 years; her daughter Genel; sisters JoAnn Merry and Doris Pruett; brother Clifford Pritchard; and other family mem- bers and special friends who loved her.

Melanie Rachelle Wilde


Melanie Rachelle Wilde passed away on March 10, 1995, in Loma Linda, Califomia. She was bom with a major heart defect. Melanie was 7-1/2 months old at the time of her passing.


She is survived by her parents, Steven Wilde and Barbara Wagner of Loma Linda, California; sister Tiffany Wagner of Kemville; sister Lacey Wilde of Loma Linda; sister Jessica and Andrea Wilde of Weldon, maternal grandmother Adele Heitman of Lake Isabella; paternal grandparents Elmer and Doris Wilde of Bakersfield.

Byron Leroy "Barney" Pate


Byron Pate was bom in Kansas on May 7, 1920. He served in the Army during World War II.


He moved from Kansas to Califomia in 1951 where he settled in the Maywood and Torrance area where he worked for Excellon Automation as manager of in- spection.


Bamey, as he was known by, moved to the Kem Valley area in 1974 where he lived until his death on March 4, 1995 at the age of 74.


He is survived by his wife Dorthy of Weldon; daughter Georgia Barrentine of Franktown, Colo- rado; daughter Frankie Biehahn of Saugus, Califomia; daughter Elouise Richards of Fontana, California; son Kelley Byron Pate of Golden, Colorado; nine grand- children and eight great-grand- children. Along with many friends he had here in the Kem Valley.


Services were held in the Kem Valley LDS Church on Friday, March 17, 1995 at 1 p.m.


Services were entrusted to the care of the Bonnewell family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.


John Anthony Subee Il


John Subee was bom in Ho- nolulu, Hawaii on March 22, 1926. He lived in the Monterey Park area prior to coming to make his home in Bodfish where he lived until his death on March 12, 1995 at the age of 68.


" -. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard for many years. He also served in the American Merchant Marines in Oceangoing Service during the period of armed conflict between December 7, 1941 to August 15, 1945.


John is survived by his wife Mary Subee of Bodfish; son John Anthony Subee III; daughter Jan Alexis Subee of Burbank, Cali- fomia; daughter Jacquline Hunter, brothers Benny, John and Robert; sister Violet Akua; as well as four grandchildren. He will also be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him here in the Kem River Valley.


He was a member of the Men's Golf Club, Kem Valley Country Club, Elks and the American Le- aion.


Services will be held in Hono- lulu with burial in the National Cemetery of the Pacific.

Alden Eugene Westergren


Memorial services were held for Al Westergren of Wofford Heights on Saturday, March 25, 1995, at 10:00 a.m. at the Kem River Valley Masonic Louge. Of- ficiating were the officers of the Kem River Valley Lodge #827 and Kem River Valley Chapter 643 O.E.S.


Mr. Westergren was bom on May 8, 1923 in St. Joseph, Mis- souri, and passed away on March 21, 1995, in Wofford Heights, Califomia. He served in the Air Sea Rescue in WWII and the Los Angeles City Fire Department for 30 years as an engineer on the Fire Boats in San Pedro, Califor- nia. He was a member of Al Malaikah Shrine Temple and the Past Masters Club, both in Los Angeles, Califomia.


He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge #827, Lake Isa- bella Shrine Club, Sequoia Scot- tish Rite, Royal Arch Masons - York Rite, Knights Templars, Or- der of the Eastem Star - Past Patron, and the American Legion of Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna Westergren of Wofford Heights; son Mark Westergren of Sacramento, Califomia; daughter Diane Plante of Kemville; sisters Mary Comell of Wofford Heights and June Oberg of Wofford Heights; and his three grandchildren Jenifer, Jeffrey and Jaclyn Plante. He will be missed by all his family and friends.

Jack Caldwell Briggs


Jack Briggs was born in Tippecanoe City, Ohio, on No- vember 16, 1921. He passedaway in Wofford Heights on March 19, 1995 where he had lived for the past 24 years. He was 73 years old. Services were held at the Elks Lodge #2358 on Thursday, March 23, 1995. Interment fol- lowed at the Kem Valley Cem- etery. The Elks along with Pastor David Snow officiated.


Jack had served in the Navy . during WWII having eamed WWII Victory Medal, American area Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal.


Jack left Ohio while in the ser- vice and came to Califomia. After his stay in the service from 1941 to 1949 he remained in the Whittier area until 1971 when he came to make his retirement home in Wofford Heights. Jack was a member of the Elks.


For many years Jack was self- employed owner/operator of several service stations. He owned the Scovem Hot Springs Flying "A" station as well as the Douglas station in Bakersfield. Also several other stations in the area. Just prior to retiring he op- erated an Arco Station in Portland, Oregon.


Jack is survived by his wife Myrtle of Wofford Heights and three step-sisters Connie Heater, Judy Morton and Pat Stadut, all of Ohio. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Mandell Waldo Pitcher


Mandell Pitcher was bom in Tyrone, New York, on April 9, 1896, and entered rest on March 23, 1995, in Bakersfield at the age of 98.


He left New York at the age of 16 and moved to Florida where he worked as a fireman. He moved to the Los Angeles area where he remained until 1965 at which time he moved to the lake area.


Mandell often told of his early years and the hardships of the time. On a New York farm, at six years of age, he fed the farm animals. He alsorecalled building fires in the school house heating stove for his teacher and other students. Mandell was known for being a home body. He was, however, a member of the Southem Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.


He is survived by his wife, Melba, of Lake Isabella; son Harland of Westminister, Califor- nia; daughter Barbara of Holly- wood, Califomia; brother Kenneth of North Carolina; sister Irene Bennett of New York; and one grandson, Dale.


After spending nearly a century among his family and friends, he will be greatly missed by all.

Derrall P. Wells


Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 4, 1995, in the Valley Mortuary Chapel for Derrall P. Wells, age 81, of Wofford Heights. Officiating was Canon Winston Jensen of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, B.P.O.E. #2358 of Wofford Heights and the Kernville Lodge #872 F. & A.M. Burial followed in the Kem River Valley Cemetery, Wofford Heights.


Derrall was born March 18, 1914 in Lehigh, Oklahoma, and moved as a youngster to Sioux City, lowa. There he met his wife, Glaytias and they were married in 1934. In 1945, they moved to Los Angeles where Derrall worked as a recreation director during the day and attended college at night to obtain his teaching degree. In 1954, they moved to Riverkern and built and operated a motel. He also taught school in Reseda and Johnsondale.


Mr. Wells was active with the Whiskey Flat Days and served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Early Califomia Days. He was instrumental in starting the Ma- sonic Temple and St. Peter's Episcopal Church.


After retirement in 1977, Derrall purchased a boat and worked as a commercial salmon fisherman on the coast at Trinidad, Califor- nia. He suffered a stroke while


fishing in 1985 and passed away in a Bakersfield hospital on March 29, 1995.


Survivors include his wife, Glaytias of Wofford Heights; daughters Kay Wells and Jerry Lou Vance, both of Nevada; sis- ter Alice Bess Chiles; brothers Oran D. Wells and Harold Wells; grandsons Leonard and Mark Vance; and three great-grand- children.

Lorin Ann Strain


Lorin Ann Strain passed away in a Bakersfield Hospital on March 25, 1995, following a long illness.


She was bom on December 10, 1934, in Lee Vining, Califomia. She lived in California all of her life. She and her husband moved to Bodfish in 1983.
