Sara Curtis Peet
Sara Curtis Peet was born in Kentucky on November 29, 1917 to Geniveve and Edward Kyser. The family moved to North Carolina where Sara spent her early childhood. The family later moved to L.A. where Sara graduated from Los Angeles High in 1934.
Sara married Jerry Cooper in 1938. Three daughters were born to this union. In 1952 Sara married Audie Peet. They had one daughter. Sara and Audie lived and worked in L.A. area · but often spent time in Kern.
: Valley. In 1964 they purchased a home in Wofford Heights and became week-enders. After Audie's death in 1976, Sara retired from her job with L.A. School District and became a permanentresident of Wofford Heights.
Sara will be remembered by her many friends as a warm, caring and generous person who was always willing to help anyone in need. Sara liked to play Bunco and Bingo but in later years her enjoyment was sitting on her porch, enjoying the lake view and visiting with her friends. She loved the his- tory of the Kern Valley and enjoyed talking with friends about it. Sara was staying with her daughter in San Antonio when she went home to be with her Lord on July 4, 1999.
Sara is survived by her daughters Carol Sanborn of Torrance, Kay Cooper Cross of Wofford Heights, Virginia Pitts of Wash. son-in-law Jerry Pitts of Okla .; Johanna and Edward Scott of San Antonio, Texas .; grandsons, Brandon and Curtis Pitts of Washing- ton, Chris Parks of Nevada, granddaughters, Roxanne Parks of Nevada; and
Chrystaline Scott of San Anto- nio; great grandchildren Gilcrest Pitts, Jennifer Parks and Edward Scott.
Memorial services were held July 6, 1999 in San Antonio. Burial was in Green Hills Cem- etery in San Pedro, Calif.
Erlene Dorothy Sandifer
A memorial service was of- ficiated by Pastor Dave Snow on July 2, 1999 at the First Baptist Church for Erlene Dor- . othy Sandifer was born Au- gust 5, 1930 in Lompoc, Calif. Her death came on June 25. 1999 after an extended illness .- She is survived by her hus- band of 48 years, Sam Dou- glas Sandifer of Wofford Heights; their sons, Steven Douglas Sandifer and wife Marcia, Rodney Kemp Sandifer, Michael Glenn Sandifer and wife Martha; seven grandchildren and her brother Vern.
Erlene was a licensed voca- tional nurse. She worked until her retirement at St. John's Hospital in Oxnard where she cared for aged and terminally ill patients. In 1980 she be- came active in the T.O.P.S., also in knitting and ceramics groups. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Oxnard, for many years.
She will be greatly missed by her many friends.

Hazel S. Mason
Hazel Mason passed away at age 90 on July 20, 1999 at Kern Valley Hospital. Hazel was a resident of Whittier for 60 years.
She is survived by her daughter Patty Archer of Lake Isabella; son Gordon Mason of Eugene, Ore .; grandsons, Johnnie Michael Mulvaney of Southlake, Kevin Archer of Long Beach, eight other grand- children, fourteen great-grand- children, two brothers of Terre Haute, Ind., Roger Sanders age 96 and Paul Sanders.
Hazel was preceded in
death by her husband Edgar (1969), sons Donal (1977), Edgar Jr. (1996), grandsons Timothy Patric Archer age 50, (1999).
Interment at Rose Hills Whittier.

Janet Laird Hewitt
A memorial service is pend- ing for Janet Laird Hewitt who passed away on July 22, 1999 in Mt. Mesa after a long illness. Janet was born Oct. 17, 1907 in Coalita, Scotland on the is- land of Islay. She was 91 years old. Janet was a war bride. She married Jess Hewitt and came to the U.S.A. on a ship from Australia. They lived at Black Gulch in Keyesville until he passed away at an early age.
Janet stayed in the valley and worked for Dr. Pergine and then was the bookkeeper
for Blue Flame until she re- tired.
She leaves behind her spe- cial family, Jess Motgomary, Sandy Chase, and Jamy Smith and Sue Mulligan. Also, her niece Barbara MacMillan from Australia and a few other rela- tives and friends. She will be greatly missed.

Cynthia Ann Rothert passed away at age 51 at Memorial
Hospital in Bakersfield on July 21, 1999. Burial was at the Kem Valley Cemetery and was officiated by John Carpenter. Cynthia was born Nov. 1, 1947 in Berkeley to Paul and Betty Rothert of Kernville. She was employed by the Social Ser- vices Department in Bakers- field.
She loved the Kern River Valley, her horses and all her friends she's made up here.

William J. Reed
Bill Reed was born on Janu- ary 1, 1924 and passed away at home on June 25, 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, June; his sister and brother-in-law Lois and Jack Weaver of Encino, four neph- ews and numerous other fam- ily members.
The Reeds moved to the Kern River Valley in 1983 from Burbank. He was an active member of the Men's Club at the Kern Valley Golf Course.

Cynthia Ann Rothert Gruning
Services will be held August 9, 1999 at 11 a.m. at the Kern- ville United Methodist Church, corner of Big Blue and Sirretta, for Cynthia Ann Rothert Gruning. Cynthia Ann passed away at age 51 at Memorial Hospital in Bakersfield on July 21, 1999. Cynthia was born Nov. 1, 1947 in Berkeley to Paul and Betty Rothert of Kern- ville. Royce Elmer Smith
Graveside services were held on July 29, 1999 at 10 a.m. for Royce Elmer Smith at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights. Officiating was Dennis Hinkey of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat- ter-Day Saints.
Royce was born in Littlefield, Texas on Dec. 30, 1937 and passed away in Mountain Mesa, on July 24, 1999. He was 61 years old. He was a resident of the Kern Valley from 1953 and graduated from Kern Valley High School in 1956 where he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Joan, in 1959. He was involved in many businesses in the Kern Valley, including general contracting. Hewas well known for his quick wit and positive attitude and enthusiasm for life. His grand- children were very special to
him as were all his family and friends. He was very generous and supportive of the Kern Valley FFA. and numerous other youth organizations.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan Smith of Lake Isabella; his mother, Effie Smith of Lake Isabella; daugh- ter and son-in-law, Cindy and Roger McCoy of Bakersfield; daughter Dana and son-in-law Fritz Goss of Bodfish; four grandchildren, Cara, Ryan, Alyssa McCoy and Amanda Goss; sister Sue Hinkey of Lake Isabella; brothers Randy Smith of Lake Isabella and Gary Smith of Redding; many nieces and nephews; and nu- merous friends.
Honorary pallbearers were Bob Johnson, Bo Williams, Joe Leonardi, Ed Wimmer, Chris Moore, Stanley Carver, Ken Thorn, Gino Baker, Richard Rooney and Nick Silicz.

Robert Zeff Melchiori
Memorial services were held July 30, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Valley Mortuary Chapel for Bob Melchiori. Officiating was Pas- tor Jeff McCulty of Mt. View Southern Baptist Church.
Mr. Melchiori was born Sept. 22, 1925 in Santa Monica and passed away on July 25, 1999 at his home in Lake Isabella after a long'illness. He and his wife moved to the Kern Valley 10 years ago after retiring from the construction business in Canoga Park.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating. He was a mem- ber of the Bodfish Beamers and the Moose Lodge.
Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rita Melchiori of Lake Isabella; daughter Su- san Ralph of Simi Valley; two granddaughters, Denise Rupel of Arizona and Sara Melchiori of Santa Barbara; and two grandsons, Gary McDonald of San Diego and Shawn McDonald of Indiana.

Ethel Gertrude Brierley Bell
Born June 14, 1922 in Alhambra, Ethel Bell entered into rest Aug. 9, 1999 at Kern Valley Hospital after a brief illness.
She proudly served her coun- try in WWII as a member of the . Coast Guard. A licensed pilot, she flew with the 99's, and par- ticipated in the Powder Puff Derby. She graduated from the University of Denver with a de- gree in education and spent many years teaching children with ce- rebral palsy.
A long-time resident of Riverk- ern, Ethel is survived by her husband, Clay Bell; son Jeffrey Dotson of Salinas; daughter and son-in-law Robin and Lee Boyer of Kernville; granddaughters Robin and Rosie Dotson of Ojai;
grandsons Jeffrey Shell of North Highlands and Bradley Boyer of Kernville; sisters Mary J. Price of El Sobrante and Martha Jane Ives of Glendora; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ethel was active in the Kern Valley Historical Society, The Clan Diggers Genealogical Soci- ety and the LDS Church choir for many years. She also served as secretary of the Riverkern Water Company. In recent years she greatly enjoyed the time she spent at the Alzheimer's Respite Cen- ter in Lake Isabella where her wonderful soprano voice filled hall.
Visitation will be at Valley Mortuary on Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A memorial ser- vice will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mountain Mesa. Graveside services will be immediately following at the Kern Valley Cemetery
A reunion for the family will be held at Robin's River Restau- rant following interment.

Corinne Marie Stewart
Funeral services for Corinne Marie Stewart, 75, of Ord, Neb., were held July 17, 1999 in Ord. Mrs. Steward died July 15 at her home in Ord.
Mrs. Stewart was born Oct. 14, 1923 to Wilford and Lenora (Schefsky) Haimes in Burwell, Neb. Shewas raised in Burwell and graduated from Burwell High School. On Dec. 11, 1941 she married Wayne Ellsworth Stewart at Grand Island. The couple farmed in Ord after their marriage. In 1948 they moved to Los Angeles and then re- turned to Ord to farm in 1950. In 1953 they moved back to California. After Mr. Stewart retired, they moved to Kernville where they lived for 22 years. In 1992 they returned to Ord where she lived until her death.
She was active as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader and in baseball auxil- iary. While in California, she belonged to the Westchester Methodist Church. She en- joyed baseball and was a fan of the Cubs, Braves and Dodg- ers. She played Yahtzee, crossword puzzles, and “find the words" puzzles.
She is survived by her hus- band, Wayne Stewart of Ord; two sons, Phillip E. Stewart of Billings, Mont. and Paul W. Stewart of Lake Oswego, Ore .; one daughter, Peggy M. Souther of Thousand Oaks; one sister, Helen McQuay of Alpine, Ariz .; eight grandchil- dren; and nine great-grandchil- dren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two broth- ers, Bernard and Harold Haines.

OBITUARIES
Wesley Lee Blyleven
Wesley Lee Blyleven, 68, died Aug. 15, 1999 at his home. A native of California, he was bom Sept. 29, 1930 in Lennox, Calif., to Cornelius and Jessie Blyleven.
He lived in Bodfish for the past six years, coming from Torrance, where he raised his family. The Kern River holds special memories for Wes' family, as they spent many years camping, swimming and fishing with family and friends.
Wes played an active role in our community volunteering his time at the Kern River Fish Hatchery, Kids' Fishing Derby and maintaining the rose garden
at the Highland Chapel Meth- odist Church. Wes loved fish- ing on the river and gardening.
Wes was retired from the City of Torrance, where he was a tree supervisor for 34 years. He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the Army from 1951- 1953.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Ida Blyleven; sons Mike and Jerry of Torrance; daugh- ter Judy Hansen of Carson City; brothers Neil and Ron; five grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews and cousins.
He will be laid to rest at For- est Lawn Memorial Park in Long Beach, close to his parents.

Marvin W. Powers
Marvin W. Powers, of a pioneer Kern Valley family, died Thursday. He was 76.
Marvin Powers was born Oct. 27, 1922, and grew up in Weldon. He served in WWII, earning the American Campaign medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Euro- pean-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a member of the VFW.
Marvin worked on the dam that formed Isabella Lake. He worked at South Fork School for 29 years and was a local leader of 4-H for 20 years. He taught hunter safety for 22 years.
Marvin was a cowboy at
heart and was courageous through everything. He was a member of the Weldon United Methodist Church all of his life. He was a wonder- ful, loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a friend to everyone.
Marvin was the brother of Bob Powers, local historian who writes the "Kern Valley History" column for the Kern Valley Sun.
Church services were held at the United Methodist Church and were officiated by Reverend Dr. Charles White, and visitations were held at Hillcrest Mortuary in Bakersfield.
Donations can be made to the Weldon United Method- ist Church or to the Cancer Society.

Vernon Louis Miller
Vernon Louis Miller was born July 20, 1924 in Wellfleet, Neb., to Louis E. Miller and Katharine Thompsen Miller. The family moved to Los Angeles when Vem was 10 years old.
Vern .attended George Washington High School in Los Angeles until joining the U.S. Navy Dec. 30, 1942. Vernon was a Boatswain's Mate Second Class and assigned to the Mo- tor Torpedo Boat Squadron 21 with the USS Shikellamy. He was honorably discharged Jan. 29, 1946 and returned to work with his father in the family business known as Miller's Foods in southwest Los Ange- les.
Vern moved to the Kern Valley in March 1971, where he resided until his death on Aug. 23, 1999. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and lovingly remembered for his friendly outgoing nature, his love for fishing, coaching his daughter's Little League softball team and then, later, a women's softball team .. He enjoyed playing pool and table tennis.
Vern, aka "Dad," "Papa," 'Grandpa" and "Apple," is sur- vived by his son Larry V. Miller of Redondo Beach; daughter Linda E. Radie of Torrance; daughter and son-in-law Wendy K. and Terry Mullen of Victorville; grandchildren Jeffrey Miller, · Angela Duran, Stephanie Miller, Jennifer Radie, Tyler and Heather Mullen, and great- grandchildren Vincent, Autumn and Madison Miller and Chey- enne Duran.
Graveside services were held in Inglewood Park Cemetery, where he was laid to rest beside his parents.
Helen Ruth Hammond
A funeral Mass was cel- ebrated Aug. 30, 1999 at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Wofford Heights for Helen R. Hammond, who passed away Aug. 25 in Mountain Mesa.
Helen was bom July 16, 1916 in Connecticut. She worked in the aerospace industry and moved to the Kern Valley after retiring 21 years ago. She was a member of the Altar Society at St. Jude's and the TOPS Club for 20 years. She enjoyed fishing and camping.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by son Jim Hammond of Bodfish; son and daughter-in- law David and Rosa Hammond of Bakersfield; son and daugh- ter-in-law Bob and Virginia Hammond of Las Vegas; son and daughter-in-law Richard . and Carol Hammond of Los Angeles; grandchildren Tim, Richard, Traylin, Daniel, Amber and Rich; great-grandchildren David, Shara, Taylor, Justin and Austin ..

Patsy Jean Lomax was born May 28, 1928 and passed away Aug. 26, 1999.
She was from Newhall; she had a dream to live in Kernville, which she did for several years . Patsy passed away after a long illness.
She is survived by her hus- band Joe R. Lomax; son James Arnold of Klackmass, Ore .; son Joe W. Lomax of Nevada; daughter Patsy Jo Lomax; daughter Polly Jean Lomax of Newhall; daughter Sally Jane Lomax of Weldon; 13 grand- children; and 36 great-grand- children.
Services will be held at Kern Valley Cemetery on Sept. 3 at 10 a.m.
Ruth Childers
Graveside services were held on Aug. 27, 1999 for Ruth Childers, who passed away at her home on Aug. 23. Ruth was a member of Eastern Star for 50 years, Daughters of the Nile, Homitau Chapter of Order of the Golden Slipper, Kem Valley Women of the Moose, and the Pink Ladies Auxiliary for five years. She also was a school volunteer, until her health started to fail.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, in 1998. Ruth is survived by her daugh- ter and son-in-law Kenneth and Linda Kabler of Ventura; grandchildren Katherine and Brandon Eifrid and Kimberly Kabler, all of. Ventura; great- granddaughter Sarah Eifrid, also of Ventura; and brother Robert Redfern of Carson City.

Diane Jean Perone
Diane Jean Perone, 48, died Aug. 13, 1999 at her home in Wofford Heights.
She was born in Glen Cove, - N.Y. on Oct. 5, 1950 to Dominick and Helen Perone, and lived in the Kern Valley for the past 18 years.
She is survived by her brother, Nick Perone of Minne- sota; brother Dominick Perone of New York; and the VanderLinden family, and so many more very close friends.
Services for Diane will be held on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Weldon Ranch in Kelso Valley, with a celebration of her life to follow.

Jacqueline Anita King
Private arrangements were made for Jacqueline Anita King, who passed away Aug. 21, 1999 at her residence in Squirrel Valley, where she and her husband resided for 25 years.
She was born April 1, 1924, in the small town of Clarendon Hills, Ill.
She was past president of Grandmothers Club No. 94, in which she was very actively in- volved. In past years, she was also involved in the Moose Lodge, Woman's Club, Side- walk CBers (known as "Little Jake"), and a bowling league.
Jacqueline is survived by her husband of 53 years, Fred King; her mother, Margaret Mestyanek of Squirrel Valley; daughter Gail Kern of Carson City; son Glenn King of Squamish, Wash .; five grand- children and five great-grand- children.
She was a very special lady, mother and grandmother, and will be dearly missed by her family and many, many friends.
Raymond John Schofield
Raymond John Schofield of Florence, Ore., died Aug. 23, 1999 at age 88. He was born June 1, 1911 in Chicago. In 1935 in Palos Park, III., he married his wife, Theresa M. Schofield, who survives him.
He worked for Carnegie Steel Company in Chicago; Interna- tional Harvester, also in Chi- cago, as an instrumentation engineer; Western Michigan State College in Kalamazoo, Mich., and American Potash and Chemical Co./Kerr McGee in Trona.
He lived in Oregon for five years, coming from Weldon.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Nadeen Letha Roake and Donna Rae Schofield Moos, and son Keith Raymond Schofield.
Disposition was by crema- tion.
Contributions can be made in his name to Peace Harbor Hospice.
Bums's Riverside Chapel in Florence, Ore., was in charge of arrangements.

Walter Henry Wobermin of Lake Isabella passed away on July 17, 1999 in San Diego of complications from a stroke. Walt was born on Aug. 1, 1917 in Brush, Colo. He was raised in Savage, Mont. in a log house that his pioneer father built on the banks of the Yellowstone River. His father taught him how to be a mechanic at a young age. Walt was very gifted at building anything he wanted. An accomplished artist, he en- joyed oil painting with other lo- cal Isabella artists. He was al- ways willing to give a helping hand to his friends, and baked bread for his friends and neighbors regularly.
Walt retired from Lockheed and moved to Lake Isabella in 1970, with his wife, Peggy. They resided here for 29 years. They were married 49 years when she preceded him in death a year ago.
Walt is survived by daughter Joyce Olsen of San Diego; brother George Wobermin of Vancouver; sister Ruth Lang of - Portland, Ore; four grand- daughters and four great- grandchildren, all of Southern California.

Katie Ann Croft
Funeral services will be held Sept. 8, 1999 at 10 a.m. at Highland Chapel Methodist Church for Katie Ann Croft. In- terment will follow at the Kern River Valley Cemetery.
Mrs. Croft was born Dec. 6, 1911 in Pinewood, S.C. and passed away on Sept. 2, 1999, in Bakersfield. She was a resi- dent of the Kern Valley for 25 years. She was a member of TOPS and the Kern VAlley Art Association and enjoyed play- ing bingo at the VFW.
She is survived by her step- son and his wife, Thomas and
MaryAnn Croft of Las Vegas; brother Richard Furman Jenkinson of Pinewood, S.C .; sisters Marjorie Kneece of Chapin, S.C., Dorothy O'Cain of Lexington, S.C and Lois Wamer of St. George, S.C .; and 15 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard D. Croft; sis- ter Mary Anderson of Conway, S.C .; and brother Marvin Jenkinson Jr. of Pinewood, S.C.
She had the most loving and loyal friends, including Loretta McKenney, Shirley Keeling and many others.

Diane Rosalie Mackenzie
Graveside services were held Sept. · 13, 1999 at Pierce Brothers-Vahalla in North Hol- lywood for Diane Mackenzie, who passed away on Sept. 6, 1999 in Mountain Mesa.
Diane was bom on Jan. 1, 1936, in Los Angeles. She was a fiftff-generation Californian, whese family came from Spain. She was also the great-great- granddaughter of the first Spanish governor of California.
