Leo Kielman
Leo Kielman's life ended March 8, 2000, a month and a day after his wife Jeanne's. His final days were filled with those qualities that marked his 84 years, courage and compas- sion for those around him.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sept. 16, 1915; he was the sev- enth son in a family of 13 chil- dren born to Polish immigrants. . He was proud of his "cobble- stone rabble" heritage and grew up valuing principles rather than, materialism. Honesty, integrity, and compassion for all living things were the cornerstones of his long life, and were his gifts to his two daughters, four grand- children and all who knew him. His handshake was as legally binding to him as his signature. His religion was the Golden Rule, his place of worship the outdoors.
Leo's mind and hands sought the logical and mechanical in the world around him. He had a natural ability to fix anything, designing and creating tools or parts if none existed.
One of the first Navy workers at China Lake NOTS in 1944, Leo took pleasure and pride in his jobs-particularly in his later civilian work on the Sidewinder missile. An active member of the desert community, he was known for his deep-pit barbe- cue expertise.
In 1951. Leo briefly switched
· engineering degree at the age of 39 from the University of Ari- zona: He regarded his educa- tion as one of his greatest ac- complishments and in the final year of his life, established a Cerro Coso Community College scholarship, and educational trusts for his grandchildren.
Leo was a gifted storyteller. The myriad of stray animals that limped into his open home and heart had odd names and strange fictionalized personali- ties as he recounted their ex- ploits over the years (some were just plain strange, intuiting the softest touch in town ... )
The story of Leo's marriage. to Jeanne was a tapestry woven over 60 years' time. They were a part of the early days of China Lake, forming friendships and connections that enriched the rest of their lives. Leo's devotion to Jeanne during her 11-year struggle with Alzheimer's dis- ease exemplified his remark- able ability to walk his talk. Com- mitment- in all aspects of his life- was not an abstraction.
Leo is survived by his daugh- ters, Sukey Kielman and Jann Veach; his son-in-law, Kelly Veach; his grandchildren, Gram Gallagher, Jay, Joel, and Julene Veach; his brother Max Kielman; and his sister, Violet Kielman.
A memorial celebration for Leo and Jeanne Kielman will take place March 26, 2000 from 1 to 4 p.m. atthe Carriage House in Ridgecrest: Please come with stories and humor to commemo- rate their lives. A Catholic Mass will be said in Ridgecrest: :

Carolyn Ruth (Honey) Gaskin
Surrounded by family and friends, Honey Gaskin passed away peacefully Feb. 18, 2000 at the age of 88.
She was born April 13, 1911 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Eunice Guthery and Oliver Renolds Carter. She was one of eight children, including five sisters and two brothers. Her 65 year marriage to Floyd "Sug" Gaskin began when they eloped in 1930 and was full of many adventures. To- gether they started the Trailrite trailer business, building custom-crafted trail- ers in Denver. Other busi- ness ventures included own- ing a chicken ranch in Santa Fe and a fishing boat based in Newport Beach
An excellent seamstress, Honey blessed people throughout her life with her artistic fine creations. As an avid reader, she was always interested in current events as well as language and his- tory. Generous and support- ive are words that come to mind in memory of Honey. Her family was a great joy in her life and she was always in close contact with her two. children and the following generations:
Honey lived with her daughter, Sherry Schermerhorn, in Lake Isabella since 1995, the year of her husband's passing. She enjoyed attending the Kern Christian Church as well as lunching at the Senior Nu- trition Program. Her starring role in the television Home Health commercial was en- joyed by many in the valley.
Family includes sister Emma Bartlett, Corpus Christi, Texas; son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Ina May Gaskin of Summertown, Tenn .; and daughter Sherry Schermerhorn of Lake Isabella and son-in-law Thano Schermerhorn of Wal- nut Creek. Grandchildren in- " clude Dana Gaskin-Wenig, Sarah Teed, : Christina Schermerhorn; Rose Schermerhorn, Eva Gaskin, Samuel Gaskin, Paul Gaskin and Floyd Gaskin. Great- grandchildren include Kesrel Wenig and Gayla Gaskin.
The following are words. from Honey's oldest grand- daughter, Dana Gaskin- Wenig of Seattle. "My last grandparent died tonight at 8 o'clock at 88 years of age. Her name was Carolyn Ruth Carter Gaskin-but everyone called her Honey. If it's true that loved ones are waiting to greet us on the other side, I know that my grandpa Sug is the first in line" He's been waiting for her these past years and they will probably start up bickering and mak- ing up right away. He always said that when he first met. her he thought she was 'kinda pretty, kinda smarty:" I will- miss her sorely.
