Lillian Gertrude Fogelsong
A memorial service was held Oct. 30, 1999 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Kernville for Lillian Gertrude Fogelsong. Officiating was Father Bob Wood.
Mrs. Fogelsong was born Nov. 10, 1903 in New Bedford, Mass. and passed away on Oct. 26, 1999 in Mountain Mesa.
She came to Californiain Feb. 1960 and worked at Sears for 25 years before retiring. She moved to the Kern River Valley in 1980.
She was a charter member of the Girl Scouts of America and she enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to cook and sew and just spending time with them.
She is survived by her daughter Doris Bettencourt of Lake Isabella: daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Jack Erny of Tucson; sister Florence Gobel of Quincy, Mass .; grandchildren Lynn Bettencourt of Lake Isabella, Sherry McDaniel of Carson, Buddy Bettencourt of Diamond Bar,
Patty Garnett of Temecula and John Bettencourt of Hemet; 11 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed.

Leonard Childs
A graveside service was held Nov. 2, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Kern River Valley Cemetery for Leonard Childs, who passed away on Oct. 28, 1999 in Bakersfield.
Mr. Childs was born in Lon- don, England and moved to Lake Isabella 30 years ago af- ter retiring from Firestone Tire. He enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law June and Rob- ert Camarano of Bakersfield; and a brother in England, Jack Childs.

Gloria Belle Mallory
Graveside services were held on Oct. 28, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cottage Grove Cemetery (one-half mile east of the Onyx
Emporium) for Gloria Belle Mallory, who passed away Oct. 25, 1999 at Bakersfield Memo- rial Hospital.
Gloria was born Sept. 1, 1930 in Horton, Kan. and was raised in Kern County, graduating from Kern Union High School. She was a loving mother of two sons, Michael and David Collins; a daughter, Francee Mallory; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Gloria will be missed greatly by her two sisters, Sandi Tardiff and Karen Evans. Gloria en- joyed a full life as a home health · care nurse for the last 15 years and as owner of Valley TV Service before that. She served faithfully and with great dedi- cation as a reserve deputy of the Kern County Sheriff's De- partment. Gloria was loved and respected by all who knew her. She will be missed by friends, family and co-workers.

Ceriece (Peer) Reindl
Ceriece Reindl was born April 13, 1915 in Perry, Mo. She moved to California when she was a small child. Later she met and married her husband of 61 years, Paul Reindl. They had five daughters. When Paul Reindl retired they moved to Lake Isabella where they spent nearly 20 happy years together until his sudden death in 1994, at which time her loving daughter Marcy came to live with her and after Ceriece was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Marcy took care of her, with the occasional help of her older sister Carolyn Bryant, and nephews Jerry and Harry Da Hill.
The last 5-1/2 years of her life were a dark journey but with the loving care of her two daughters and the expert medical care given to her by Dr. Sawal, she was able to experience some measure of joy and peace in those last confusing, weary and somewhat radical years of her life. She lost her battle with Alzheimer's on Oct. 18, 1999 when Daddy came to take her home. She opened her eyes, called his name twice and tried to reach for him. Then they were gone.
All of those who knew Mom loved her as sweetness was and had always been her greatest and most true talent. Our aching hearts will always have a special place where her beauty and sweetness will ease the pain of our loss.
She is survived by her loving daughter Marcy who loved and cared for her, holding her hand, until her very last breath; by her daughter Carolyn; her sister Jane Widner; her nephew Harry Peer; her grandson Robert Stillman; three other daughters, and numerous other family and friends who loved her dearly. Ronald E. Rogers
Ron passed away peacefully Oct. 30, 1999 at his home in Kernville, surrounded by his family.
Ron was born Oct. 15, 1938 in Richmond, Ind. to Elmer and Grace Rogers. He attended school in Richmond and then Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
He is survived by Louise and Jim Devaney, Mike and Ann Mason, Penny Cochran and Robert Bigham, Don and Gretchen Becklund, April MacFarlone, Ray Becklund, Lori and Art Oriza, Jeff Becklund, and special buddy Sarah Oriza, 14 grandchildren, and six great- grandchildren.
Ron's parents are both de- ceased. He leaves a beloved brother Gerry and sister-in-law Pat Rogers; sister Pam and brother-in-law Gary Griggs; numerous nieces and nephews; special friends and a part of the family Robert and Peggy Kelley and godson Ronnie Kelley; hunting and fishing pal Dale Winchell and many dear friends and neighbors.
Ron fought a good fight. He never complained and had a wonderful spirit. The Lord blessed him and those around him. We will miss him dearly. Happy Trails, dear one, until we meet again.

Richard Allen "Rick" Chernick
Rick Chernick was born in Encino on Dec. 1, 1956. He moved at an early age to Reseda where he attended school. Following high school he worked for seven years at Terry Lumber Co. in Tarzana. He then worked for several years doing earth- quake repair and cleanup. Four years ago, Rick moved to Wofford Heights to be near his family. He passed away at his Wofford Heights residence suddenly on Oct. 31. He is survived by his parents Don and Margaret Chernick and by two brothers, David and Mike Chernick, all of Wofford Heights, and many friends who will miss him greatly. Private inurnment was held with interment at the Kern River Valley Cemetery.
Pauline J. Walke
Private services are pending for Pauline J. Walke of Onyx. She was born April 27, 1915 in California. Pauline died Oct. 29, 1999 at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital. She was 84 years old. She was a long time resident of Onyx and worked as a Pink Lady at Kern Valley Hospital.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Tim and Paula Walke of Onyx and Norman and Linda Mae Walke of Kernville; son Pat Walke of the San Fernando Valley; sister Lorane Grey of Laguna Hills; sister Virginia Grey of Van Nuys; and five grandchildren.

Harold Estman Woolard
Funeral services were held Nov. 8, 1999 at Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lake Isabella for Harold Estman Woolard. Offi- ciating was Pastor Dave Snow of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella.
Mr. Woolard was born on May 1, 1939 in Concordia, Kansas and passed away on Nov. 4, 1999 at his home in Wofford Heights.
He came to the Kern Valley 32 years ago from Escondido after retiring. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and visiting with friends at Cheryl's Diner.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jewell.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Richard and Shirley Woolard of Silver Lake; son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Julie Woolard of Mt. Mesa; daughter Pat Brierley of Bakersfield; sisters Zella Dyson -and Wanda Weishapel, both of Kansas; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He will be missed by his family and friends.

Louise Marie Abshire
Louise was born March 10, 1927 in Alvarado, Texas, to Newt and Annabell Leonard. She passed away in a Bakers- field hospital on Oct. 21, 1999.
At the age of 16, Louise and Roy Abshire were married and she devoted the next 56 years of her life to being a wonderful wife to Roy and mother to her four boys, Roy, Donnie, Eddie and Terry, and her one daugh- ter Sandy.
She had been a resident of the Lake Isabella area for the past 26 years. Louise was also instrumental in raising several of her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Roy Abshire of the family home; four sons and one daughter; 13 grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; brothers Alvin and Ray Leonard of Texas; sister Lucille Ferguson of Texas; and many nieces and nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Hill, in 1998. Louise will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Family graveside services were held at the Kern River Valley Cemetery on Nov. 4, 1999 with Rev. John Car- penter, pastor of the Kemville United Methodist Church offici- ating.

Gilbert Nathan Gillette
Gilbert Nathan Gillette, 84, passed away Oct. 11, 1999 at his home in Camarillo.
Mr. Gillette was born in Caldwell, Kan., on Oct. 11, 1915. He had been a resident of Lake Isabella for 20 years before moving to Camarillo. He was an ironworker for 35 years, served in the Navy for 10 years from 1935 to 1945, and was a chief boatswain's mate (T) USNR. Mr. Gillette was an avid fisher- man and enjoyed playing pool and cards with friends and neighbors. The real joy of his life was being with his children, grandchildren and "Carrot-Top," his one great-granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Dorothy Forbes; daughter Judy and her husband Steve Lindquist of Camarillo; daughter Jo Ellen and her hus- band Marty Martin of Camarillo; son Greg and his wife, Nadia Gillette of San Jose; nephew Woodie Woodard of Friant; grandchildren Jennifer Woods, Christy Davis, Ryan Gillette, Nicole Zarris, Erika Barros, Kristen Lindquist, Brandon Martin and lan Gillette; and one great-granddaughter, Dayna "Carrot-Top" Davis.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 14 at Park Lawn Memorial Park, 6555 E. Gage Ave., in Los Angeles.
Arrangements were under the direction of Pierce Brothers, Griffin Mortuary, 1075 E. Daily Dr., Camarillo.
Sylvia Juanita Goodwin
Graveside services were held at Kern River Valley Cemetery on Nov. 5, 1999 for Sylvia Juanita Goodwin, who passed away Nov. 1, 1999 in Mountain Mesa.
Sylvia was born on Nov. 17 1923 to Mabel (Warren) and William Claybom Hayes. She had 11 brothers and sisters.
During the war, she worked as a welder and riveter and later worked in the health care in- dustry. Sylvia moved to the Kem Valley in 1963 where she and her late husband, Herbert Goodwin, were involved in several small business ven- tures.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Goodwin, and is survived by son Ron- and his wife Kathy Smith of Portland, Ore .; daughter Darlene and her hus- band Jim Young of Lake Isa- bella; grandchildren Tom Heimforth of Missouri Valley, lowa; Jayson Smith-Paige of Albany, Ore .; Patricia Amold of Lake Isabella; and E. Todd Smith of Portland, Ore .; and great-grandchildren Shaylee Ann Smith-Paige, Katie Marie Smith-Paige, Jaykub Michael Smith-Paige, Max McGilligan Smith, Justin Dean Heimforth, Sean Ryan Heimforth, Ethan Cole Heimforth, Ashlee Nicole Young and Clinton Allen Arnold. She is also survived by three sisters and five brothers, all of whom live in Colorado.

Charles H. Weidman
Charles Weidman died on Nov. 9, 1999 in Petaluma. He was the husband of Eleanor Weidman; father of Peter Charles Weidman, John Arthur Weidman and Joyce Ann Weidman; grandfather of Adam and Amanda Weidman; and half-brother of the late Arthur Weidman. Charles Weidman was a veteran of WWII , serving in the Army Air Corps. He was employed by United Airlines as a pilot. He was 75 years old and a native of San Bernardino.

Memorial services were held on Nov. 13, 1999 for Alfonso Melgosa, who passed away in Mt. Mesa on Nov. 9.
Alfonso was born on Sept. 29, 1910 in Mexico. He and his wife raised their family in Tor- rance. Alfonso retired from the Santa Fe Railroad and moved to Weldon, where he resided for 27 years. He enjoyed hunting, especially fishing and just being outdoors. He and his wife both · enjoyed a love for desert tor- toises.
Alfonso was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, and is survived by son Robert Melgosa of Colorado; daughter and son- in-law Lola and Dave Bonfield of Torrance; daughter and son- in-law Virginia and Walter Hackman of Bakersfield; daughter Gloria Ann Campbell of Riverside; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Ruby Adeline Hershey
Private arrangements were made for Ruby Adeline Hershey, who passed away on Nov. 11, 1999 in Bakersfield.
Ruby was born in Carson, N.D. and moved to Seattle where she worked for Northwest Pacific Bell Telephone Co. for 37 years before retiring and moving to the Kern River Valley in 1982.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Golden Slip- per, the South Fork Woman's Club and the AARP.
She enjoyed bingo and vis- iting with her numerous friends. She is survived by her brother Robert Peterson of Connecticut and 12 nieces and nephews and her many friends in the valley.
There will be no memorial service as per her wishes. Do- nations may be made to a charity of your choice in her name.

Alvis Leman "Brownie" Spencer
Al Spencer as he was affec- tionately known was born to Benjamin and Noreh Spencer on Jan. 27, 1914 in Clarkville, Texas. He entered into rest at his home on Nov. 9, 1999 at the age of 85. Al left Texas in 1943 and came to Shafter He worked on the Sill Farm for 15 years, following a short stay at the Hankins Ranch in Wasco. Fi- nally he worked for the Ciacca Bros. Ranch in Buttonwillow. Upon his retirement, Al moved to Lake Isabella, where he lost his wife Rachel after 52 years of marriage. Later Al met Pauline Combs, who had lost her hus- band, and the two married. They had 9-1/2 years of happy mar- riage.
Al is survived by his wife, Pauline; son and wife Max and Toni Spencer of Shafter; daughter and spouse Betty and Ray Dickey; stepdaughter Joan and Bob Krowel of Lake Isabella; stepdaughter Connie and Alvin Brown of Riverside; stepson Robert and Sandy Combs of Long Beach; and stepson James and Pat Combs of Manhattan Beach. Al had three brothers and two sisters, 17 grandchildren, 25 great-grand- children; five great-great- grandchildren; and a great host of friends.
Services were held on Nov. 13 in the Rose Chapel at the Lake Isabella Funeral Home with the burial rites at Shafter Cemetery.
Al liked to volunteer at the Senior Center and helped with passing out commodities to the needy.
Services were entrusted to the Bonewell Family of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home.

Rosemary Peterson
Rosemary was born in Min- neapolis on Sept. 22, 1931 to Edward and Rose Riley. She was married to her husband Arthur for 52 years.
Rosemary loved to make clothes for her family until her health prevented her from do- ing so. One of her hobbies was painting pictures of horses and flowers and she did a beautiful job of it. Another hobby she enjoyed was her garden. Her great love was to travel to the ocean as her health permitted it.
Rosemary is survived by her late husband, Arthur; son John Peterson of Colorado; daugh- ter Pamela Peterson of Lake Isabella; daughter Patty Rowland of Palmdale; brother Jack Riley of Yucca Valley; brother Dan Riley of Minne- sota; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family held a vigil for her on Nov. 19 in the Rose Chapel of the Lake Isabella Funeral Home. Rosemary will be greatly missed by those who knew her.

Shirley Mae Woodard
Mrs. Shirley Mae Woodard, 72, died Nov. 17 at her resi- dence in Warner Robins, Ga. after an extended illness. Fu- neral services were private.
Mrs. Woodard, a native of Deerfield, III., was a home- maker and widow of the late Mr. Grover Marion Woodard. Mrs. Woodard was a Lutheran.
Survivors include: son Greg Woodard of La Habra; son Dennis Woodard of Big Bear; son Jeff Woodard of Pico Rivera; son Larry Woodard of Bakersfield; son Steven Woodard of Rancho Cucamonga; daughter Debby Dykes of San Luis Obispo; daughter Kathee Menosky of Hope Mills, N.C .; daughter Judi Albert of Warner Robins, Ga .; sister Leslie Rudolph of Lake Bluff, Ill .; brother Lester Marshall of St. Petersburg, Fla .; brother John Marshall of Franklin, N.C .; and eight grand- children.
Heritage Memorial Funeral Home of Warner Robins was in charge of the arrangements.

Charles H. Weidman
A memorial service was held in the family's home with the family on the evening of Nov. 11, 1999 for Chuck Weidman who died after a long illness of emphysema.
Chuck was born May 8, 1924 in San Bernardino and died Nov. 9, 1999 in Petaluma, where he had lived with his wife Eleanor Weidman since moving from Kernville on Jan. 2, 1998.
Chuck enjoyed a 37-1/2 year career as a commercial pilot with United Airlines after serv-
ing as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. After retiring from the airlines May 8, 1984 he moved with his wife Eleanor to Kernville.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years Eleanor; son Peter and his wife Susan of Atlanta; son John and his wife Lynn of Seattle; daughter Dr. Joyce Weidman and her spouse Michael Brewton of Fairfax, Calif .; and grandchildren Adam and Amanda of Atlanta.
He was cremated at Parent- Sorenson Mortuary and Cre- matory in Petaluma. His ashes were presented to his daugh- ter Dr. Joyce Weidman.

Rose Mary Sarno
A visitation and Rosary was held on Dec. 2 in the chapel at Valley Mortuary for Rose Mary Sarno, with burial on Dec. 3 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Los Angeles.
Rose was born on Oct. 17, 1900 in Syracuse, N.Y. to An- tonio and Theresa De Marco, who came from Italy in the late 1800s. She passed away in Mountain Mesa on Nov. 30, 1999. Rose was 99 years old.
Rose was a beautician in the Los Angeles area for over 50 years. She loved her chil- dren, grandchildren and great- grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them when- ever possible.
Rose lived in the valley for four years, most of them at the Skilled Nursing Facility in Mountain Mesa, where she was involved in the different activities that were held there.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Domenic. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Judy Sarno of Wofford Heights; daughter Rosemarie Conner of Wofford Heights; granddaughter and husband Adrianne and Rex Davis of Bakersfield; grand- son and wife Tim and Mer Conner of Mountain Mesa; grandson and wife Mike and Theresa Conner of Torrance; grandson and wife James and Janet Conner of Bakersfield; grandson Thomas B. Sarno of Germany; grandson Duke An- thony Sarno of Texas; grand -. daughter Tamara Marie Sarno of Long Beach; grandson Thimothy Nicholas Sarno of Texas; and great-grandchil- dren Ryan and Kristen Gobler, John and Ashley Davis, Jenni- fer Conner, and Jasmine and Kyle Arcurio.

Charley Fay Massongill
Funeral services were held on Dec. 7, 1999 at the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella with Rev. David Snow, Pastor, officiating, for Charley Fay Massongill, 84. Committal ser- vices and interment followed at the Kern River Valley Cem- etery in Wofford Heights.
Charley Fay Massongill was born Aug. 7, 1915 to Charley and Martha Purselley in Grandbury, Texas. She was the 11th of 12 children, all of whom have preceded her in death. When she was 3 years old, her family moved to Farwell, Texas, where she grew up and in 1933 met and married Clyde Massongill. To this union were born three chil- dren, Dwane, Diane and Roxanna. In 1941, they moved to North Long Beach, Calif. and Clyde went to work at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, where he worked for 26 years. In 1944 they moved to Compton, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir, and their children gave their lives to Jesus at an early age. In 1971 after Clyde re- tired they moved to Lake Isabella. Charley became a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake Isabella on the first Sunday of January 1972. The many friends she has made in these past 28 years here in Lake Isabella have truly blessed her. Charley was pre- ceded in death by her hus- band Clyde in 1994. She is survived by her three children, Diane Timm of Lake Isabella; Dwane Massongill of Las Ve- gas; and Roxanna Carter of Mukilteo, Wash .; 11 grandchil- dren; 25 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
