Arthur Edwin Kent


Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, for Arthur Edwin Kent at the Kernville Baptist Church. Offi- ciating was Pastor Richard Lewis.


Mr. Kent was born Aug. 21, 1926, in Los Angeles, and passed away Feb. 4, 1998, in Wofford Heights. He was a resident of the Kern River Val- ley for 19 years.


He was a member of the Elks, the Moose and the VFW. He belonged to the Pattern Makers Union. He was also very active in racing-in the dry lakes and later in life was a pioneer in the jet boat racing industry.


Mr. Kent is survived by a son, Richard Kent, of Red Bluff, California; daughter, Janelle Kent, of San Diego; son, Art Kent, of Medford, Oregon; son, Emmett Kent, of San Diego; daughter, April Bevins, of Wel- don; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Alice C. Otwell


Alice Corrine Otwell died at the Sutter Auburn Faith Hospi- tal in Auburn, California, on Feb. 8, 1998, at the age of 83. She was born in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on Sept. 1, 1914, and had been a resident of Auburn, California for five years. She was previously a resident of Kern County for 10 years and Hot Springs resi- dent until 1951.


She is survived by her sons, Wayne Otwell, of Lake of the Pines; and Darrell Otwell, of Newbury Park, California; daughters, Mary Ellen Dorough, of Hot Springs, Ar- kansas; Murlene Hopkins, of Lake of the Pines; and Linda Behrens, of Woodland Hills, California; sisters Cordelia Jackson, of Ft. Smith, Arkan- sas; and Lois Furr, of Tucson, Arizona; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.


Services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park Chapel in Bakersfield on Thursday at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to Gideon's International and may be forwarded to Lassila Fu- neral Chapels, 551 Grass Val- ley Highway, Auburn, Califor- nia 95603.

John Sumner


John Sumner died Feb. 10, 1998. He was born in Corbin, Kentucky in August of 1926.


He was active in many com- munity activities and held nu- merous leadership posts. John was Sr. Vice Commander in the D.A.V. and active in the V.F.W. Post #7665, in both of which he was a life member. He was also active in the Eagles, Bodfish Beamers, Charter member of Oildale Moose #1222. He also held a Fellowship Degree in Moose 498 in Lake Isabella.


John was in the Navy from 1944 to 1947 in the South Pa- cific and was involved in the atomic bomb testing on Bikini Atoll. He worked in the oil fields for over 30 years in California, South America, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.


He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jackie; loyal and devoted stepdaughter, Gail Goar; and her son, Michael Dennison, of Tehachapi; a brother, Carl Sumner, of Ken- tucky; a sister, Lucille, of Wis- consin; three daughters and numerous grandchildren.


Cremation of Mish Funeral Home in Oildale and interment of ashes in the Veterans Cem- etery in Riverside, California.


A memorial for John will be held on Feb. 22, 1998 at 1 p.m. at the V.F.W. Hall in Lake Isa- bella.


Frances Aileen Strobl


Memorial services were held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Kern River Val- ley Christian Church for Frances Aileen Strobl who went to be with the Lord on Feb. 9, 1998. Officiating was Pastor Duane Splawn.


Frances was a resident of the Kern River Valley for 15 years and was an active mem- ber of the Kern River Valley Christian Church until her health kept her from going.


She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Cheryl Pence, of Arizona; and daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Rod Roemmich, of Lake Isabella; Vicki and Bruce Redman, of Encinitas, Califor- nia; Susan and Jerry Phillips, of Washington; and daughter, Pat Johnston, of Cucamonha, California; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchil- dren. .


She was always so sweet because she loved the Lord. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

William Hauser


William Hauser, age 85, passed away in Bakersfield on Feb. 20, 1998 after a short illness. The fifth child of Clyde W. and Mary Shope Hauser, he was born December 27, 1912 in Los Angeles. He at- tended school in Los Angeles.


He was united in marriage with Irene Mae Barnard on Dec. 24, 1940 and to this union were born two sons, William G. and Donald E.


Bill and Irene were active with children and youth orga- nizations in various capacities and always enjoyed helping with the PTA and Scouts. Both he and Irene were honored for their work in PTA with life mem- berships. Irene died on Aug. 10, 1981.


During World War II, Bill built aircraft in Southern California. Later he became a tool and die maker, designed many proto- types for Knickerbocker Toys of Los Angeles. He worked in the plastics industry, design- ing tools for Sparling Meter Co. of Los Angeles, as general manager of Dee & Dee Plas- tics of Pasadena, and design- ing and constructing prototype equipment for his own com- pany. In 1965, he "retired" to Bishop, operating an automo- tive front-end alignment ser- vice and gas station, before moving to the Lake Isabella area in 1976.


It wasn't unusual to hear him playing one of his many har- monicas, maybe even one he modified himself. He especially like to make music with his brother, George, and brother- in-law (by marriage), Jim Hall. Bill enjoyed tinkering in his shop, building lapidary equip- ment and traveling.


He was a member of the Kern River Valley Lodge No. 8927, Free & Accepted Ma- sons of California, Kern Valley Moose Lodge #498, K.R.V. Senior Citizens, Lake Isabella, and Mountain "Airs" Citizens Band Radio Club, Kern River Valley.


Bill is survived by his brother, George, of Wofford Heights; sons Bill and Kathie, of Layton, Utah; Don and Catherine, of LaVerne; two grandchildren, Denice and Matt Taopero. of


Kitty Hawk, North Carolina; and Steve and Donna Hauser of Sterling, Virginia; and a great- granchild Tappero expected in September; special nieces, Gwen, Mindy and Cheryl Schock, of Simi Valley; and Velven Lyons, La Puente. He is also survived by one step- granddaughter, Charlotte and Bob Reddington; three step- great-grandchildren, Brian Wil- liams, Suzy Williams, and Helen and Cory Stevens; and three step-great-great-grand- "children, Dylan Williams, Breanna Stevens and Allen E. Stevens; and close friend, Ava Colescott.


He was predeceased by his parents, wife Irene, sisters Kathleen and Myrtle and broth- ers Art, Charles, and a brother who died at birth.


A memorial service was held on February 24 under the aus- pices of the Kern River Valley Masonic Lodge No. 827. His ashes will be scattered in the ancient bristlecone pine forest ' of the Inyo National Forest, joining Irene's.


The family would prefer any remembrances be directed to- ward a proposed service club project to purchase kidney di- alysis equipment for the Kern Valley (c/o Bob Conley, Kern. River Valley Lodge No. 87).

Elsie Joyce Sherman


Elsie Joyce Sherman, age 88, passed away Feb. 21, 1998 at Pleasant Care. She was born · in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and has lived in Wof- ford Heights for seven years.


She is survived by three sis- ters, two nephews, a grand- niece and great-grand- nephew. She lived a full life. She and her husband traveled a lot when they were younger. Her family shall miss her.


Katherine Lorraine Snider


Memorial services were held at the Kernville United Meth- odist Church on February 20, 1998 for Katherine Lorraine Snider. Officiating was Pastor John Carpenter.


Katherine was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on January 8, 1918. Her residency in Kem- ville spanned 24 years. Over time, she had been a member of the United Methodist Women, South Fork Women's Club and Grandmother's Club.


Surviving her are her hus- band of 56 years, Carl Snider of Kernville; son, Dennis, of Anaheim; son, Michael and wife Marilyn of Holton, Kan- sas; sister, Harriet Guernsey of Panorama City; three grand- children and four great-grand- children.


Profound thanks are offered to all who have, through love and caring, enhanced her life and have caused the family a less painful recovery from this inexpressible loss.

Lewis Paul Balthasar


Lew was born in Pasadena, California on Feb. 14, 1913 and passed away on Feb. 21, 1998, at the age of 85. He was the youngest of seven children, two of whom are surviving: his brother, Harry Balthasar, who lives in Newhall, California; and his sister, Mary Rehorst, of Laguna Hills, California. Lew is survived by his wife, Doris. They have been married al- most 48 years. Doris lives in Mt. Mesa, where they have resided since 1971 following Lew's retirement from Califor- nia Institute of Technology in Pasadena.


He is also survived by sev- eral nephews, Jan Balthasar of Valencia; Millard Carpenter of San Francisco; Jack Kingan of El Monte; Bill Balthasar of Aliso Viejo; and Bill's three sons, Jason, Travis and Dana Balthasar.


While at Cal-Tech, Lew served as a supervisor of the "wind tunnel," testing the per- formance of wind resisting equipment, mostly dealing with aircraft. He worked at this dur- ing World War II, helping acti- vate many of our planes which were helpful in winning our vic- tories during that war.


When Lew and Doris moved to the Kern River Valley, in 1971, they became active in many community activities - the Historical Society and the South Lake Property Owners Association, of which Lew was a past president, to name only two.


Lew was a Past Master of the Kern River Valley Masonic Lodge. He earned one of the greatest honors, the Hiram Award. He was also an active member of other Masonic Con- cordant bodies; Scottish Rite, York Rite and the Hiram Roam- ers (a play group).


Lew was a dedicated mem- ber of the Weldon United Meth- odist.Church, 20021 Highway 178, where a memorial ser- vice was held Friday, Feb. 27 at 10:30-a.m. The Rev. Dr. Charles R. White officiated and was assisted by two Past Mas- ters of the Kern River Valley Masonic Lodge; William S. Turner PM and Robert "Bo" Williams PM.


A smail graveside service was held in the afternoon of Feb. 27, 1998 at the Bakers- field Union Cemetery, where Lew's ashes are to be interred.


Edna Adeline Holsberry


A funeral mass was held Friday, Feb. 27, 1998 at 10 a.m. for Edna Adeline Holsberry who passed away Monday, Feb. 23, 1998 in Mt. Mesa. Edna was born Oct. 30, 1918 in Oakley, Michigan.


She moved to Long Beach from Lansing, Michigan in 1946 and worked as a bookkeeper until retiring to Lake Isabella in 1973. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagles Lodge and the Elks.


She was preceded in death by her husband, William, and is survived by her sisters, Lucille Frey, of Dimondle, Michigan; and Beatrice Gra- ham, of Mission, Texas; and brother, R.J. Wohlfert, of Scottsdale, Arizona.


Donations may be made in her name to St. Jude's Catho- lic Church.

Thelma Leotus Cole


Thelma Leotus Cole passed away in Bakersfield on Feb. 11, 1998. She was born on Oct. 13, 1910 in Lavaca, Ar- kansas. She had lived in and enjoyed the beauty of the Kern River Valley for nearly 40 years.


Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, William A. Cole, and a daughter, Thelma Jean Dun- ham. She is survived by her two daughters, Lorene Cole Weldon of Bakersfield and Lucille Cole Eisenhauer of Lake Isabella; a son, William A. Cole, Jr .; and a great-grand- son, Chad Smith, whom she had been guardian of for many years. Chad is stationed on the U.S.S. Topeka, a nuclear sub which is believed to be in the Persian Gulf at this time. Her grandchildren include Daniel and Cynthia Dunham, Verna Overton, Lora Sliger, Debra Moe, Steve Perry, Kristine Frisch, Beth Eisenhauer, Greg, Stuart and Billy Cole and Teresa Stalford. She also had 19 great-grand- children who thought she was very special. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all her family.

Edward Arnold Basham


· Edward Arnold Basham was born on July 1, 1954 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He was the son of Harvey Arnold Basham and Betty A. Kiper Basham. He departed this life on Febru- ary 17, 1998 at approximately 12:30 P.M. in San Antonio, Texas.


Edward is survived by a daughter Stacey Marie Basham of San Antonio, Texas; his mother Betty A. (Scharfenberg) Britt of Bod- fish, California; a brother Mar- tin L. Basham of Canyon Coun- try, California; two sisters Veronica Dale Muchmore of Tracey, California and Ruth Boyd of Manhattan Beach, California; as well as two neph- ews, two nieces, five aunts and numerous friends.


Edward was baptized in the Catholic Church and attended both the Catholic Church and the Nazarene Church where he was very active during his years at home.


Edward was a Boy Scout and joined the United States military in his senior year of high school. He left home for basic training at Fort Ord, Cali- fornia upon graduation in 1972. He volunteered for duty in Viet- nam, but never went due to the ending of the war. He contin- ued to serve in the military for 20 years before retiring in 1992.


Edward went to work for the city of San Antonio, Texas early in 1993. He served in 3 depart- ments, the last of which was as a city Code Abatement Officer.


Edward was helping the San Antonio Police search for teen- age suspects in two home bur- glaries. He spotted'them and was in pursuit both in his city vehicle and on foot when he died of an apparent heart at- tack. Edward was the first Code Abatement Officer to die in the line of duty in that city.


The funeral was held on February 23, 1998 at the Mis- sion-Alamo Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Samuel Spencer.,,the. San Antonio Police Depart- ment Chaplain and Rev. Bill Shockley officiating. He was . laid to rest at Fort Sam Hous- ton National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas. He was given full military/police honors in- cluding the missing man fly by, a 21 gun salute, an honor guard · of police cars numbering 50 plus and the retiring of Edward's badge number over the air.


William Henry


William Henry passed away in Arizona on March 2, 1998 at the age of 69. William was born in Hominy, Oklahoma on September 2, 1928. William was employed as a teamster for 35 years. He worked for Ameron Steel in Etiwanda, CA.


William moved to Lake Isa- bella in 1988, where he be- longed to the Moose Lodge and the camping club.

William is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marge Henry, his daughters Sharon Styrk of Fontana, California; Nancy Hossler of Tucson, Arizona; Janet Henry, residence un- known; Linda Frizzell of Etiwanda, California and Judy . Cudmore of Bakersfield; his son Ron Henry of Ontario, Califomia; his brother, Beeman Henry of Ontario, California; his sisters Francis Young of Victorville, Califomia and Treva Hallaway of Fontana, Califor- nia; as well as 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.


William was a wonderful caring husband and father. We will miss him dearly. Private services will be held.


Robert Moore Newsom


Robert Moore Newsom was born on September 1, 1914 in Charleston, South Carolina and passed away in Bodfish on March 2, 1998 at the age of 83.


He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Marion, in 1993 and a grand- son, Gregory Lee Perkins in 1986.


He is survived by his daugh- ter, Patty Perkins of Bodfish; his daughter and son-in-law Jeanne and William Merrell also of Bodfish; his 6 grand- children: Tom Holcomb and his wife Tammy of Bodfish; Kelly Holcomb of Weldon; Kim Aguilar and her husband Joe of Canoga Park, California; Steven Ruley of Las Vegas, Nevada; Linda and Richard Ruley, both of El Monte, Cali- fornia; 12 great grandchildren Holly, Aaron, Michael, Lori, David, Steven, Jessica, Kelsey, Elizabeth, Debbie, Cassidy and Billy as well as one great great grandchild, Carley Ann.


Mr. Newsom was a Kern Valley resident for the past 22 . years and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Dr. Olin Emeral Duncan

On March 11, 1998, Dr. Olin Emeral Duncan went home to be with the Lord at the age of 92 years in Wofford Heights. He was born on Dec. 31, 1905, in Hastin, Missouri. He ac- cepted Christ as his Saviour, May 18, 1930, in the Four- square Church of Sterling, Colorado. Olin married Jessie Green of Sterling, Colorado, on August 23, 1932. Together, they went to LIFE Bible Col- lege in Los Angeles, graduat- ing in 1937.


Their pastorates included Raton, New Mexico; Guymon, Oklahoma; Newton, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; and North Platte, Nebraska. In May of 1957 they were appointed as District Supervisors of the Western District of Foursquare


Churches and served in that capacity faithfully for 14 years, seeing a significant growth both in number and size of churches. Dr. and Mrs. Duncan retired from official service in September of 1971, but re- mained active in speaking en- gagements throughout the dis- trict. They moved to Wofford Heights in May of 1972 and remained active members of the Family Life Center Four- square Church.


He is survived by his wife Jessie; his daughter and hus- band, Roberta and Frank Lortscher of Bakersfield; and his son and wife, Dick and Edie Duncan of Portland, Oregon. Dr. Duncan is also survived by nine grandchildren, including Sheryl Patterson and husband, Gene; Carl Magness and wife, Sharon; Tim Duncan and wife, Diana; Karen Whetsell and husband, Isaac; Kimberley Hofer and husband, Dave; Kathy Lortscher; Karen Roney and husband, Jeff; Frank Lortscher and Todd Lortscher. He also has 15 surviving great- grandchildren, Kristi, Gene and Luke Patterson; Stephanie and Keith Magness; Alicia, Sean and Ryan Duncan; Angela and Amy Brown; Eli Whetsell; Kristina Hofer; and Kristin, Jus- tin and Alan Roney.


Memorial services were held Monday, March 16, 1998, in the Family Life Center, Wof- ford Heights. Those wishing to


honor Dr. Duncan's life may make donations to Foursquare World Missions through the Family Life Center, 20 West Panorama, Wofford Heights, CA 93285.


Interment at Hillcrest Me- morial Park of Bakersfield.


Paul Henry Daniel


Paul Henry Daniel was born on Jan. 18, 1914 in Fairfield, Ohio, and passed away on Feb. 21, 1994.


He joined the U.S. Navy in 1935 and fought in two wars. He retired in 1955 as Chief Petty Officer E-7. Paul retired from a job with the city of.Los Angeles in 1976 and moved to Camp James in 1980. He loved Kernville and trout fishing.


Paul is survived by one brother, George Daniel, two sons and three grandchildren. Donations can be made in his name to "Friends of the Kern River." For more infor- mation, call 760-378-2531.

Leo John Adam


A funeral mass was cel- ebrated at St. Jude's Catholic Church in Wofford Heights on Thursday, March 19, 1998, for Leo J. Adam of Lake Isabella. Celebrant of the mass was Rev. Jim Kudilil. Interment at Kern Valley Cemetery. Mr. Adam died Friday, March 13, 1998.


He is survived by his nine children: Alan Adam of Lake- wood, California; Alice Young of Topeka, Kansas; Lois Helland of Rice, Minnesota; Joyce Burlog of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Tom Adam of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Evelyn McCollough of Kirkland, Washington; Mary Herbold of Bellflower, California; Tim Adam of Biloxi, Mississippi and Jim Adam of Tupelo, Okla- homa.


Mr. Adam is also survived by two brothers: Duane Adam of Reynolds, North Dakota; and Robert Adam of Minneapolis,


Minnesota; 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene M. Adam, on August 9, 1997. He also was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and two grandchildren.


Leo was born June 9, 1912, in North Dakota and moved to Bellflower, California in 1965 and to Lake Isabella in 1981. He was currently a member of the Moose Lodge #1297.


Lucille I. Martin

Lucille I. Martin of Citrus Heights, California, age 82, passed away on March 7, 1998, at Sutter Roseville Com- munity Hospital. She was born on April 6, 1915, near Pitts- burgh, Pennsylvania. She and her late husband, Harry, re- sided in Squirrel Valley from 1970-1997. She was proud to have been a member of the Kern Valley Hospital Auxiliary.


She was predeceased by her husband, Harry, in 1997. She is survived by daughters Jacqueline Miller of Sacra- mento; Janet (Mrs. Armando) Hernandez of Bakersfield; and Joyce (Mrs. Joseph) Kouba of Reston, Virginia. Also surviv- ing are grandchildren Sharon and Stuart Miller; Lisa Chavez; Armando Hernandez, Jr .; and Derek Tiffany.


At her request, no viewing or formal service was held. Her family will cherish her love and memory forever.

Helen Ritchie McEwen


Helen Ritchie McEwen was born Helen Grandville Ritchie on November 23, 1903, in Forfer, Scotland, and was re- ceived into her eternal rest on March 15, 1998.


She retired to Sylmar, then to Kern County from a career as cook to some of Hollywood's distinguished stars.


Helen is survived by her daughter, Nancy Carlsson; son-in-law, Gene Carlsson; two grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren.


Memorial services were held Saturday, March 21, 1998, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Lake Isabella.

Virgil Ray Childers


Memorial services were held on Friday, March 27, 1998, at the Masonic Lodge in Kern- ville, to honor Mr. Virgil Childers of Bodfish. Virgil was born July 20, 1917, in Jordan, Mont., to his parents, Chandler and Mattie Childers. In 1938, Virgil began proudly serving his country in the United States Navy. Virgil Childers served 30 dedicated years in the Navy, beginning with World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Viet- nam. At the time of his retire- ment, Virgil had earned the highest rank that he could as- certain, that of Chief Warrant Officer IV. During his years of service, Virgil was highly commendated. Among these commendations were, the World War II Victory Medal, China Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Asian-Pacific Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Medal of Honor. In 1941, just before the onset of WWII, Virgil married the love of his life, Ruth Claudia (Redfern) Childers. The two became inseparable and one, and gave each other strength through the years. Virgil was also very accomplished in other


areas as well. He was a 50- year member of the Masonic Lodge in which he was a Shriner, who dedicated a great deal of time, effort, and money to the Shriner's Children's Hos- pitals, a cause in which he greatly believed. He was a Royal Arch Mason, a York Rite Mason, and a member of the Order of the Knights Templar. Virgil was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veter- ans, the Moose Lodge, and the Jim Beam Bottle Club. In 1980, Virgil and Ruth moved from Ventura, Calif., and moved to Bodfish, where he and Ruth have lived ever since.


Not only did Virgil honorably serve his country, and become a proud leader of his commu- nity. He was also the loving husband of Ruth Claudia Childers, as well as the proud father of Linda Jo Kabler and her husband Kenneth L. Kabler of Ventura, Calif. Virgil is also survived by his granddaugh- ters, Katherine A. Efrid, and her husband, Brandon J. Efrid of Ventura, and Kimberly A. Kabler of Ventura. Virgil has one great-granddaughter, Sa- rah Raeann Efrid of Ventura; and also three sisters, Gussie, Bunnie, and Coy, all of whom reside in Montana.

George William Schiber, Jr.


George William Schiber was born on Oct. 30, 1913, in Collinsville, Ill., to his parents George William Schiber, Sr., and Julia Schiber. In 1936, George married his wife of 50 years, Margaret, who preceded him in passing in 1996. During his life, George was the Com- mander of the American Le- gion, and a member of the Elks Lodge. George is credited with building the "Shoe Box" shoe store in the valley many years ago, becoming its first owner, and building Napa Auto Parts locally.


George also served several years with the Corps of Engi- neers, building the Theme Building at the Los Angeles International Airport. He was also an avid gardener, bring- ing up many hard-to-grow veg- etables in this area. He loved the outdoors, and was a proud family man. On March 27, 1998, George William Schiber, Jr., passed away in Lake Isa- bella. Graveside funeral ser- vices were held on April 3, 1998, at the Kern River Valley Cemetery, in Wofford Heights, with Reverend Jack Dilley, pastor, officiating.


George William Schiber, Jr., is survived by his sons, Michael of Templeton, Calif .; Larry of Huntsville, Ala .; and Phillip of Livingston, Calif .; and by his daughters Carol Thomas of Lake Isabella, and Linda Petty of Bakersfield. George is also survived by his grandchildren, Melinda Kerschner, Ruth Ann Brownning, Michael George Schiber, Lawrence Schiber, Stephen Schiber, Michelle Randour, Collette Chaudry, Leslie Bollinger, Jennifer Tho- mas, Doug Thomas, Carolyn Schiber, Kaylyn Schiber, and Nicollette Schiber.
